My favorite song by Material Issue. Saw them play a free concert in a field on the side of U of I's Assembly Hall in May or June 1991 or 1992 (date corrections appreciated!) at some sort of campus open house event at University of Illinois. Tremendous power pop! Great HiWatt sound. One of my favorite concerts! Very cool free show! Sorely missed band. God rest your soul Jim. Anyone who was there and remembers this concert. Please reply.

I know I might piss some people off with this comment but I’m going to say it anyway. If you don’t like it well…lump it! I heard this song today for the first time in over 30 years and was immediately teleported back to the spring of 1991 when I first heard it. The first time I did hear this song I was immediately blown away by it and thought to myself “wow, this is going to be the sound of the 1990s!“ Unfortunately later on that year Nirvana released that album “Nevermind“ and that was when music for me started to go to hell. Here we are decades later and all the talentless garbage we have to show for exemplifies that. Of course like everybody else I to embraced Nirvana but after about two years of listening to that apathetic Seattle misery music I had to put it down and walk away from it for good. As for Jim Ellison and Material Issue grunge rather quickly eclipsed his wonderful talent as well as many others from the 1990/1991 timeframe making pretty much all bands like his mere footnotes in the history of music. Of course we will never know but I can’t help but wonder if that’s the reason why Jim killed himself. Once again, if you’re offended by this well then you can just be offended! Grudge killed many awesome bands at the beginning of that decade and I will forever say that!
@gregsmith2122 Жыл бұрын
I've been saying basically the same thing for many years. I personally think, grunge murdered many amazing groups such as material issue, neds atomic dustbin, etc that would have gone so much further. I pine for 90 91 times. Very creative music quickly overshadowed and forgotten.
@phayzyre1052 Жыл бұрын
@@gregsmith2122 Greg, my friend I don’t know where you are in the world but I wish I could shake your hand and buy you a pitcher of your favorite beer! You said a mouthful. From about 1989 to 1991 that was what I thought was going to be the dawn of a new era of music and I was really looking forward to the post modern movement of but when that piss ant whiny Kurt Cobain hit the airwaves in the fall of 1991 bellyaching about how miserable his life was and all of the gloom, doom and angst filled crap going up there around Seattle it did not take me long to put that bullshit down for good! A friend of mine who feels the same way said it best: “grunge was like a fart…it came on loud and strong, created a stink then disappeared!” Apart from that one thing I’ll give credit where credit is due because at least a lot of bands from the 1960s, 70s and 80s are still together and making music. A lot of people can name artists from that time period and the songs they wrote but name any grunge musician and people are like “who?” And where are all of the grunge pioneers who were once so revered when grunge hit the scene? Either one of two things: dead or have all but disappeared! Sure, grudge had its moment in the sun but its moment was about like a shooting star burning brightly yet very briefly.
