Math teacher Jim Gard on protecting his students during school shooting

Jim Gard is a math teacher at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where a former student shot and killed at least 17 people Wednesday. Gard joined CBSN to explain how he took measures to protect his students during the shooting.

Yes. This is the world we live in. Schools are having active shooter drills the same way my generation used to have air raid drills, because active shooters are a real threat. There was a drill scheduled for Broward County at the end of February.

When someone goes through something so brutal your mind dosnt know how to react, some people might cry some might be all numb and some might laugh. We all have different ways of grieving. Gard definitely isn't a crisis actor but he certainly should not be praised as a hero because a student of his class, Josh Gallagher, (look him up on twitter) says that this man had locked the classrom door and didn't let him or a portion of his class back into the room after hearing the first gunshots and so they had to sit in the hallway scared out of their minds for four minutes until another teacher realised and let them into his class. During the time Mr Gard was in the classroom, he contacted a news station to let them know what was going on, all the while his students were immobilised with fear, saying their goodbyes to their loved ones just outside his door...

I wonder if people had helped this kid, if those who saw him angry and isolated, had helped, maybe this would not have happened. I think just expelling him was a push in the wrong direction. I teach in an important university, and sometimes I've asked for help for a student that seemed to be in some trouble. The response is always something like "call security", "let us know and we won't let him in the school again", things like that. My response is always "I'm trying to help him; not cause more problems for him."

TalkingCheeseBurgerr You can tell a screen by blurred outlines of their bodie, notice the blurr on his arms's outline. Also they put the yellow tape on set in front of the green screen. They always lose edges of their outlines from chroma key, so they add blurr effects to compensate. Also you can actually see the green screen on the collar of the reporter.

I still say the office e staff need to do better way hung who is entering the school when the teachers and kids are in class. It is so sad. Teachers do not know who has entered the building until they are trying to lick doors and covering kids. The Principal and secretary's need to be screening g who comes on the building and stop leaving access doors that people can get in without needing to be screened. My heart goes out to the victims and all the teachers who try to protect the kids. They are amazing.
