@Rickie j While I respect the differences in our thoughts and opinions, in this case, what YOU think of who God is and what it means to "fear God" is irrelevant to the merit of the original comment, nor does it matter to EDDIE himself. HE is a God-fearing man (according to the commenter), whether you want him to or not. The true meaning of "God-fearing" is complicated often misunderstood (as you just described) outside of faith circles but it is perfectly well understood among believers. I once heard a similar argument to this.. and it related exactly to the idea that math is an inate sense. The argument was that most people, especially any athlete that plays ball sports, intuitively knows geometry and calculus, even if they dont know it. And the argument is that when you see a baseball hit off of the bat, your brain immediately starts calculating its initial velocity and throughout the flight of the ball, you are recalculating the same equation over and over again to predict, with a very high degree of accuracy, the place where that ball will land. And you can do all of these calculations subconsciously, while simultaneously accounting for variables like wind, sun and the fact that your only means of measurement (your eyes) are moving, bouncing as you run, and also taking stock of potential dangers, like other players, the outfield wall, or anything you might trip over. Now you could apply this to any ball sport, racket sport or racing. Our brain is a phenomenally complex and beautiful computer capabale of astounding things.
@yungdani90186 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I think things like that rely on reproduction. Sports players have seen the trajectory of the ball so many times in so many different situations that the brain gets used to it following a certain path.
@CottidaeSEA6 жыл бұрын
Yung Dani I've always been good at catching balls, ever since I was a kid, despite not doing repetition training. While people certainly get better as they do things, that's just obvious. It's about predicting the trajectory and having good kinetic vision. The more you do it, the more you start to notice patterns. The more you see those patterns, the better you understand them. No skill is different.
@yungdani90186 жыл бұрын
@@CottidaeSEA While it is possible that your genetics gave you the oppertunity to be better at catching balls, it does not even matter that much. I don't know you but you probably believe you've always been better than other people at catching balls because somebody (like your dad) has told you so in your childhood. Or you could not find a lot of skills you were good at so the human likes to praise itself with something. The Idea of being good at sports in correlation to being good in mathematics/physics to me seems like a weird one. Otherwise all topsporters would be high-functioning physisists as well right ;) well.. the opposite seems to be true.
@CottidaeSEA6 жыл бұрын
Yung Dani, I'm not exactly sure what you mean. While it's true that I believe that I've been better than others at catching balls than others, that's because that's simply what was shown through making comparisons with others. I've barely gotten compliments, so that's completely off, and none of which have been in relation to catching things. In fact, my dad didn't even know my catching ability until couple of years ago. As for if there are no other skills I'm good at, there are plenty that I'm good at. In fact, things that require me to make many precise movements at the same time are what I'm the worst at. Most other things I can do fairly well. Of course, it's not that I can't learn something that requires many precise movements at the same time, it's just that it takes a longer time to learn. It's a worse aptitude, not inability. As for your laughable comparison, the reason why they aren't both has to do with time spent doing something. Not their aptitude. Your aptitude toward something can be extremely high, that is to say a genius. However, if you don't nurture that ability, your genius doesn't matter. So assuming they had spent the same amount of time studying physics, who's to say that they couldn't be top physicists? As or me, I have a high aptitude toward a lot of things, not on a genius level however, but I've never had the motivation nor will to actually get better at one particular skill. In fact, one of my better skills would be my English, which is my second language. Oh, and regarding aptitude, I don't believe that I'm somehow special. I know my strengths and weaknesses well, and I don't believe anyone else is different in that sense. The difference is where our aptitudes lie. There are obviously some who will be underperformers and outperformers, but I believe that I'd at best be on the high end of the average part of the spectrum.

When I was a 6th grader, we had a wonderful teacher of Math. I don't remember whether he sat on a chair during his lessons, because he was always engaged explaining us how to do sums, and he did it very interestingly. He was always full of positiv energy. Unfortunately, he got sick and he died. I've never met such kind of brilliant teacher. But Eddie reminded me about my great teacher.

If that talk was delivered spontaneously, unscripted, apart perhaps from some landmarks he intended to visit, then it is the most extraordinary delivery I have ever seen. I am a great fan of him on the net anyway but he is very special in his ability to engage people in his presentation. Absolutely brilliant Eddie!

This guy, no special interest on math, yet he becomes the expert on it! Thats what we call hardwork, and he wants to do it for others bcs it said that Australia lacking maths teacher, thats his biggest motivation I think, and to think about other's needs and he fight for it, that's admirable. This guy deserves a hug for his concerns about others :) I hope I can be a cool math teacher too hehe

As a 15 year old these type of things are beginning to make my perspective of seeing things clear, I don't why people aren't showing these things to us , If I ask 'why' For some question then most of the people say thats just how it is , it's great that internet is providing the answers that noone does but unfortunately people are busy watching series instead of these.

I think Eddie really has encompassed the true beauty of mathematics in this talk. The patterns, relationships and connections that will slowly form overtime, will show you as you progress just how far you have came, and also just how tiny of a taste you have received of an amazing new world. I think that sense of knowing so much yet so little of the vast connections of mathematics has made me enjoy it more than ever, I think of maths not as a chore now, but more of an adventure into a vast new world. The most recent moment I felt this was when I finally learned the all-encompassing generalised stoke's theorem, which showed me just how connected my entire journey through calculus was, it showed me that those little skills I learned earlier just embodied small examples of bigger skills that I learned later. For me, as someone who failed Maths in High School, perseverance was key to showing me what I missed in the beautiful universe of Mathematics.

This video motivated me so much.I don't know why but when i see the title of this video, my eyes are full of tears because i had been being labeled as a stupidest in math class by my teacher and she said to me that I just not a math person, she said that i never ever got A + in math exam just because i am a slow person, and you know what ? I have been obessed with those words for a long time so when i hit the math questions my mind just remind me of what she had been said to me . I got panic attack and i didnt finish those math questions . I got anxiety , i started cried a lot . And then this video just put in my face and now i feel better. Thanks Eddie

So true, just like a sense of humor and a sense of rhythm, a "sense" of mathematics can only develop if we are patient enough to practice it until it's second-hand nature to us. Thankyou Eddie!

I've followed and watched his classroom math vids for many years now, and I'm happy for Eddie Woo. The audience loved him. KZbinrs loved his speech. I loved it, too. It was just superb and inspiring and very articulate and eloquent in ways with all the references to math being a sense, comparative geometry, and his overall enthusiasm is genuine.

Hi EDDY I APPRECIATE the way you teach. My father was a teacher in high school and I somehow had an affection with maths. Extremely agree with Eddie. It's a beautiful 4 years of independent journey in mathematics for me. 4 years ago, I came to realize that math is a set of beautiful concepts, patterns and ideas. And I never stop learning, doing and applying math in my daily life since then, while my current reality is that I am a civil engineer. Someday, I want to get into a community of creative mathematicians.
