Professor Saxe presents a design-based research project, a pilot run of ‘Learning Mathematics through Representation’ (LMR) program.
LMR module consists of 19 lessons that teaches both integers and fractions, in which various visual ways of representation, including the numerical line, are used for all mathematical are used to introduce any concept - positive and negative numbers, intervals, symmetry, and so on.
The pilot study comprised 21 classes from US schools: 11 classes followed this program, 10 classes were in the control group. Using this program that relies on visualization, students for whom English was a second language (EL), learned the material much better than with the usual method of explanation. Their performance was on part with that of the students for whom English was a native language (EP). At the same time, both of EL and EP showed better results in comparison with the control group.
