Thanks for the video - As you found out, you don't really want a new boat - plenty of options on the used market that will work just fine. You will lose a lot less money if you find a boat where the steep part of depreciation is already passed. Remember that boats are NOT investments, ever. Also remember that there is no such thing as a "perfect" boat. But you will will find something that is a perfect fit for you at this point in your journey. Have fun!

If this is your first boat, I would recommend talking to an insurance broker first. It’s not like a car…you don’t want to buy first and then find out you cant’t get it insured. A lot of companies will limit their coverage to a smaller boat and/or something less than 20 years old. To other’s comments, we just bought a 20 year old Sabre. Needs a bit of work but less than 30% of the price of a new boat. Used is definitely worth considering, especially as the market is starting to soften. If going used, consider getting a buyers broker. We used Curtis Stokes and well worth it.

A great option is a Navigator 48-50. 3 staterooms, large living room and priced in the 250-400 range. Several have done the Loop and we are doing it right now in our 50’ with bow and stern thrusters - very comfortable!

You should look at an older Hatteras ! a 50 foot like "In To Deep" had is a Great live aboard. One stairway instead of stairs everywhere. Design took a dive in the last thirty years. Now, as long as it "LOOKS GOOD", it doesn't have to be functional ! Number One : Comfort. If you can't get comfortable, you will never LOVE it ! You definitely don't want "It'll Do !" The walk around decks are worth a million bucks !

Just subscribed to 'enjoy the adventure'. Old rule of thumb: Buy new, add 20% to fit it out to cruise. Sound too high? Dink, dink engine, canvas, add'l electronics, self-steering, engine/boat spares (you will be *cruising*, not parked next to West Marine), add'l ground tackle, list goes on. Personally, I think you're w-a-y overshooting your boat needs. Three staterooms? Our first year cruising as a family of 3 was on a 24' sailboat. Entire ICW and thru-out Chesapeake Bay, we had a grand time. Actual travel expenses (moorage, fuel, smaller displacement = cheaper gear) will be less. Also, "smaller" is less intimidating, more manageable for newbies, which you appear to be. Loop is 1-2 yr commitment, surely you don't need 45' of boat for such a trip. Happy hunting!
@jmreim-643118 күн бұрын
Might consider trading the 3rd stateroom for more living space in the salon area. That’s where you’ll spend most of your time - look for a full width salon. Check out North Pacific pilothouse trawler (full disclosure, we have 1). Happy to tell you more, if interested

Beautiful boats! we actually went on one at the trawlerfest but didn't have enough footage to include it in the episode. But they're a little out of our price range, hoping to stay under 250k

Boats… “Expensive Mistresses” 😂 Might know where you guys are headed: 🤔 1. Buy a decent “fixer upper”… 2. Spend the winter doing custom wirk to make it your way… 3. Ready for a spring launch… So, boat work, snowboarding and Christmas festivals? 😂
@MathersOnTheMap18 күн бұрын
haha don't forget the cruise!! 😂. But not sure when we're going to buy the boat, will start heavily looking in January and then try and figure it out, once we buy the boat we have to pay for insurance and docking fees which isn't cheap so I'm not sure when it makes sense. Also if we don't buy in NJ I have to cruise it back to NJ until we're ready to get started on the loop! We'll see!
@kevinh89118 күн бұрын
I recommend looking at some Carver or Meridian aft cabin styles in the same size range. You can buy something used really nice for around $100K or so. And they tend to have large salons, so some room to play. Pretty sure they have two cabins forward. And the aft master which is usually quite large. Otherwise you might consider a traditional houseboat. Again lots of room to play. If you go used. Look into insurance costs BEFORE you buy. I am looking myself, and that was something I was warned about. Sometimes older boats can cost more to insure. Good Luck and safe travels....
@MathersOnTheMap17 күн бұрын
Yes we're definitely eyeing up a carver style boat, I don't think Meridian's have 3 staterooms, but cruisers and silvertons do too!

Here's some of suggestions: Cobra Yacht seamaster-45 with configurations of 3 or 4 cabins and different motorization options. Their price is very good. I also like the Swift 44 for its very low fuel consumption (14 LPH @ 8 knots) but is only 2 cabins. The Bavaria R40 Fly is interesting for its low fuel consumption (17.5 LPH @ 8 knots) with 2 cabins with a 5th bed for todler. The Aspen C120 has 3 cabins with unbeatable fuel consumption of 7.1 LPH @ 7.9 knots but this is a newer boat and the price is still high.

Make sure you inform yourselves about the additional maintenance costs involved. For instance, if you have the boat at some harbor, know the price by dimension for a spot. See if it can be negotiated for the year. Not only the boat itself.

Did you consider doing a rental over the cost of owning? You may find after doing the loop you may be over boating. Let’s face it, on land you can get out of the RV and walk around, on a boat you will encounter docking issues, plus fees and you can’t drop anchor and walk off the deck. Just a thought ay.
@MathersOnTheMap20 күн бұрын
I'm not aware of a company that offers rentals for the liveaboards on the loop, do you know of one?

Perhaps look at an older sporfish, like a 1995-2005 40-45 Viking, or Ocean, yacht. A ton of them around, especially since made in New Jersey. Lots of room for kids, staterooms, etc. Biggest issue may be the ladder to the bridge. You could find one in your price range. GLWS

I've never done the entire Great Loop but I have done many parts of it. While it's technically possible to do it on a 40ft+ boat in my opinion it's not advisable. Between 30-40 feet is the sweet spot with < 3 feet of draft. This will open up many more side trips such as "the big chute" in Canada and lots of the TVA meanders. Additionally the operating costs are proportional to the size.
@MathersOnTheMap11 күн бұрын
Wish we could but with 2 under 3 years old plus grand parent will be too tight on a two stateroom vessel 😢 I believe a 45ft will be fine on the big chute, but I could be wrong!

Is this your first boat? If yes, starting with anything the size you seem to want is insane. Even the RT 31 is borderline too big to start with. Hopefully you have long history with boats. Insurance on those big boats is also going to be tough to get. Start with a 30 foot or smaller and figure out what you need from a boat.
@Steve-qn8gn15 сағат бұрын
The way they were talking this is their first boat. They appear to not have realized that there is no boat that is good for young children like they have nor their lack of experience. Going for looks and convenience rather than stability and function shows that off.

Keep an eye out for a DeFever Trawler. A left-field suggestion, but one I think that would work great for you would be an Endeavour 44 trawlercat (with the forward master). The accommodation space you're looking for (three cabins, two heads) with shallow draft and low bridge clearance to go anywhere on the loop (no dangerous stairs for little ones). Plus being a catamaran, there's tons of deck space, and they're nice and stable when anchored out. Something like this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aIjPdH2cf7alkMk Both options should be in budget and provide the space you're looking for. Really looking forward to your adventures on the loop!

kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6KsaJ9-hq-DjdEsi=gEoJc5_dbC1Bp1UK I highly recommend a Kadey Krogen Whaleback. Yes I’m partial to this model. Most models are three bedroom, full beam 17’6” living area. One level main deck. Used models are in the $450-500k. KK does not make this model anymore. Baltimore was great, we stayed there for a month last fall.
