There will never be another one! No one will ever top this woman, she is classic, she is a legend! She should’ve had many more Tonys, losing the gypsy Tony was a big slap in the face!! As well as the movie!

The Greatest Broadway singer and performer of all time ! Ethel Merman needs to be recognized now more than ever. She is still sadly missed !!!!!!

Think of all of the composers and writers that sat and wrote plays and musical numbers with Ethel Merman, specifically in mind. There will never be another Ethel Merman.

I spam sorry that they did not record cast albums for Girl Crazy and Anything Goes back when she was in her prime. By the time she was in Gypsy, her voice had begun to fail, but she continued to sing. I saw her singing I Get a Kick.. in a program recorded within six months of her death in 1984. It was in listenable and she was many years past the time when she should have stopped and retired.

@@MarkWerderitsch-k9vShe never lost her pitch or voice. Her vibrato just slowed down. She was a showstopper until the end!

An astounding career. Everyone wanted to work on a Merman show. From the composers/lyricists to the directors, to the dancers, the entire backstage crew, the front of the house as well. Damn rare on Broadway to be able to relax for awhile about those rent checks, the child support, the water and garbage bill, and still be able to afford Christmas or buy school clothes at the end of summer. But if you got work in a Merman Show, you knew you had a sure paycheck for longer than just about anybody else. With her on the Marquee, you would not need to come up with new excuses for long time.

Highlights from this appearance have been posted before - but here we see the whole wonderful Merman presentation with Larry Blyden and Hal Lyndon as her two terrific chorus boys. Again and again she scores in ballads, rhythm songs, comedy numbers, and thrilling anthems. She was a phenomenon who continues to have a lasting influence on today's up and coming Broadway performers. Thank goodness television and sites like this keeps alive Merman's divine legacy.

Rewind to "Airplane"...Dexter, the pilot, is in hospital, lamenting his shared accommodation..."Ya see that guy? He thinks he's Ethel Merman". Rewind to "Its a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World 🌎 ". Watching her bully and boss Ernest Borgnine is a high point in the movie!

Great job putting this together from clips of varying quality. One question: why does "leave out the cherry" get a laugh? (from Panama Hattie).

Poor Larry Blyden trying to sing that duet which was originally written to showcase Ethel . . he's a trooper but you can barely hear him. He's just a prop, like that gun was.

This was at least partially the result of Merman publicly complaining that she had never won a Tony, even though she had in fact won Best Actress in a Musical for "Call Me Madam".

Can't they revitalize the whole presentation instead of 3 clips
@seventiesmemories511620 күн бұрын
Funny that after years of not getting a Tony - they finally give her one - but she had to sing a medley first! On Broadway, clearly, you have to sing for your supper. But she's clearly enjoying herself, in great voice in her early 60's.. Maybe one day someone will post the full better video instead of these pieces sewn together.

The person that made her dress should have been arrested.

I think that the dress was flattering, memorable and very suitable for Miss Merman, 64 years of age.

But that is her inimitable style. Cole Porter wrote some of his best songs, with Ethel Merman in his mind. This is rather heady stuff.
