Ethel thought the show needed one more great song in the later half. Berlin stayed up all night creating the cross-singing classic 'You're In Love'. The first time they played it for her at the piano Merman said "My God, they won't let us off the stage!" And sure enough when they premiered the song in Philadelphia it got SEVEN ENCORES.

And no wonder! Berlin used the same type of song when they revived 'Anni Get you Gun" a few years later and once again, it stopped the show. Thanks for watching and have a lovely Thanksgiving. Best; Steve

I somehow never realized that Merman's role in *Call Me Madam* is the only one for which she was awarded a Tony. Given that fact, maybe it's right that *Call Me Madam* is the one she got to immortalize on film.

In her last years, Ethel enters a New York elevator with her assistant, where there were already two elderly women. Behind Ethel's back, the one woman whispers to the other, "doesn't she look like a young Ethel Merman?" As the elevator doors open, Ethel slowly turns around and glares at the one woman. As they step off the elevator, Ethel says to her assistant, "I'd hate to think what an OLD Ethel Merman must look like!" 😁

Funny side note: The Ethel Merman cameo in "Airplane" is named Lt. Hurwitz by the writer/director Zucker brothers in honor of their Milwaukee buddy Ken Hurwitz who was a broadway musical fanboy. His son Justin Hurwitz won an Oscar at a maddeningly young age for the score to "Lala Land".

I had the good fortune to see La Merman at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles when I was fresh out of high school. Our 11th row seats were a whole 30 dollars each. It was probably intentional but her mic went out during "Life is Just A Bowl Of Cherries" and without skipping a beat, she opened up the lungs and projected over the orchestra. I think they could hear her all the way to the Mark Taper Forum when she held the note on "I Got Rhythm". 16 bars and no mic in her 70's. Amazing performer.

Steve, if they ever make a musical based upon the life of Ethel, I want you to star!!! The dance number between Donald and Vera is the most exquisite of any I've ever seen on film. She seems to always dance ballet but they really combined styles beautifully. Also, the clip with Ethel, Judy, & Babs makes Babs look VERY insecure next to fog-horn Ethel.

Growing up in the 1950-'60s I was in the marching band by the time I was in the sixth grade. (Small east Texas school.) On the bus to football games the band would sing popular songs. One of my favorite memories is singing "You're Not Sick, You're Just in Love." The girls sang the Merman part while we boys sang the antiphonal line. It was great fun. Interestingly, even in rural east Texas, we were all familiar with the music from current Broadway productions. Great review...wonderful memories.

Thank you, Steve, for another wonderful review of this important film. I always enjoyed Ethel Merman with her singing and her acting. I still remember the time Ethel appeared on "The Muppet Show" in the 70s. Kermit-the-Frog said to her, "they could use you as an air raid siren." Of course, Ethel played it coy and laughed about it, but all of sudden, she knocked Kermit to the ground. I wonder if you ever saw Elaine Stritch's one-woman show called "At Liberty"? If you haven't, it is available on DVD, and it's also available on KZbin for free. Elaine was Ethel's understudy for "Call me Madam" on Broadway, and Elaine went out for an audition for the musical "Pal Joey." She got the role as the reporter, but they would have to do out-of-town try-outs in Connecticut. As a result, she asked her manager, the director, and Ethel would it be okay if she could do both shows? All of them agree, but she had to ask Ethel if she was still going on as the lead in "Call me Madam" before she went off to Connecticut. One time Elaine asked Ethel if she was planning to do the show that evening, and Ethel said to her, "go on and do the other f-----g show, Elaine." Elaine also mentioned what Ethel did when there was a drunken individual in the audience heckling her during the "Money" song. It was totally hilarious.

I loved musicals and Berlin could get you on first exposure with his wonderful songs. I was crazy about Betty Grable, Mitzi Gaynor and others. Ethel wasn't in that mold, but I did love the movie. I actually enjoy it more now and truly appreciate the unique greatness of Merman. I'm so thankful Fox did this for Ethel. It's fun to remember and still fun to watch. Thanks.

Ethel Merman was indeed a force of nature. But those dances with Donald O'Connor and Vera Ellen! Magical. Danny Kaye is no slouch when dancing with her either in White Christmas, but not quite O'Connor's level emotional connection. I'm glad we have these big musicals on film to complement her earlier (think Eddie Cantor years) singing.

Steve---What can I say except that how I wish a dear friend of mine, Jay, were still around to hear you do The Merm. Jay passed away last year at 91. His stories were legendary, ranging from being picked up as a hitch-hiker by Dore Schary to his adoration of Ethel Merman, whom he served on occasion at Howard Johnson's in New York. So, when he died last year, we announced a wake for a guy named Jay, but also known as Ethel. I am sure, however, that both Ethel and Jay are taking occasional breaks from duets up above to giggle at the Tired Old Queen at the Movies...

Loved the movie, but Steve Hayes describing it is even more entertaining. No one brings these movies to life as he does. I share his opinion of Donald O'Connor. You Tube has unearthed many of his dance routines. When he was in a scene, you only looked at him, even with the Great Merman.
