In this lesson, we will explore the concept of probability and understand the meaning of probability. The probability of an outcome describes how often an outcome is expected to occur expressed as a fraction or percentage of the total outcomes in the experiment or observation. The uses of probability range from understanding the weather forecast, to games of chance, to understanding scientific studies, advanced math, quantum mechanics, and more. We will discuss the physical meaning of the probability of an event.

I've never fully agreed that on the toss of a coin a T or H is a probability of 0.5. Clearly it will be an very very small probability but a coin could land on its edge. Its a theoretical probability. SO T or H might be P = 0.499999999999999999999999. Making E (edge) something like 0.0000000000000001 probability.
@toby9999
@toby9999 2 жыл бұрын
The probability would be 0.5 if failed flips were excluded? I suspect that's always assumed?
@simpleman283
@simpleman283 Жыл бұрын
I recently saw a video of a coin toss at a soccer game where the coin did end up on its edge, so it is more than just theoretical. It was in the grass, so I would imagine on a hard surface the probability would be even lower. When the question is, will it land on heads or tails, the edge possibility is not part of outcome, so it really is 50/50 heads or tails, because those are the only ones that count. When the coin landed at the soccer game, the toss was redone because an edge landing does not count.
@jjsmallpiece9234
@jjsmallpiece9234 Жыл бұрын
@@simpleman283 Ok but as purely a mathematical exercise, if the rule is that the coin toss must be over a flat smooth and hard surface, there does remain a vanishingly small probability that the coin will land and remain on its edge. Obviously given the flip of the coin will cause rotation and twisting of the coin across its diameter and hence apply a force to the coin to cause it to topple when it hits the surface should rule out the possibility of an edge landing - but I don't agree that it is 0 theoretical probability. Its probably never happened in the real world if the flat surface criteria is applied.
@simpleman283
@simpleman283 Жыл бұрын
@@jjsmallpiece9234 There is the edge possibility. In my reply, I tried to make it plain I was saying on a heads or tails toss, the odds are 50/50 because the edge does not count in that equation. But yea, even on a hard surface, for sure I know it could end up on its edge. Stranger things than that have happened.

FYI According to meteorologists : the percentage of rain doesn’t predict the chances of rain. Instead, it means a certain percentage of the forecasted area will definitely see rain-so if you see a 40% chance, it means 40% of the forecasted area will see rainfall.
