09 - Rational Function Domain and Zeros, Part 1 (Vertical Asymptotes & Graphing)

In this lesson, you will learn what a rational function is in Algebra. Specifically, we will discuss how to graph a rational function by first finding the domain of the function.
The domain of the rational function are any points that cause a vertical asymptote to appear on the graph - those are the points that cause the function to approach infinity. Setting the denominator equal to zero yields the points that are excluded from the domain and are the same points where the vertical asymptotes lie.
If we set the numerator of the rational function equal to zero and solve, we will find the points that cause the function to approach zero. In other words, these are the points where the function crosses the x-axis.
Finding the domain and the zeros of a rational function is the first step necessary to sketch a graph of it on the x-y plane.

To find the domain, set the denominator equal to zero and solve for x. x - 3 = 0 x = 3 Domain: All real numbers EXCEPT for 3. If x = 3, we create a 0 in the denominator of the function. This is why x cannot be 3.

How do you square a circle for the circle with your hands put your praying hands together your thumbs are both zero and nine then you count pointer finger and that's one and eight and that's nine when you tell a long finger middle finger that's seven and two and your ring finger and your little finger is five and four that's for the books open it's 9:00 also see all your fingers when you're praying that up to nine that's why they call it prayer maybe one day people will wake up and realize they don't have 10 fingers they got eight digits of two bookends zero and nine
