If you struggle with the mikiri counter try practicing with the Undying Teacher. Think of the technique like this, simply hitting circle without holding a direction on the stick causes Sekiro to dash forward. The mikiri counter is simply hitting circle while locked onto the opponent so that Sekiro dashes forwards and subsequently gets inside his opponents guard so he can raise his foot to push the opponents thrust attack down. Don't bother trying to time this perfectly, just hit circle as the attack is closing in on you, and remember that Mikiri counters, "thrust" attacks. Therefore any attack that is thrusting towards you counts, whether its from a weapon or a body part.

Enemies deflect your attacks just like you do, so when you hear the deflect noise (Loud Clang) and it wasn't you deflecting, the enemy has gained the advantage. When you deflect an attack your follow up swing is always very fast, the same goes for your enemy when they deflect you, therefore when they deflect you they gain the aggressive position and you are now on defense, this is where the, "dance" or "rhythm" of Sekiro lies, this constant back and forth of who has advantage.

10 important non spiler tips P.S. tip number 10 is as important as tip number 1 :D 1. You can pause the game at any time, and use the items from inventory, safely, instead of swapping them mid combat on the hot bar 2. Mikiri counter is is more reliable when you pres "forward+circle" instead of just "circle" 3. The more Hp an enemy has the faster their posture recovers, meaning you should do some vitality dmg to make it easier to fill up the posture bar. Your Hp/posture work the same way, that's why it's best to keep yourself at max hp, so that your posture recovers faster 4. Hold block when away of enemy to speed up the recovery of your posture 5. When your posture gets broken, spam Cricle and dash as fast as you can to the side or back, to avoid enemy punishing you for your posture being broken 6. Keep attacking until the enemy deflects you successfully, when you hear the high pich clash, you've been deflected, now the enemy has a free hit on you if you don't switch to defence. When you get deflected, stop attacking and deflect the next attack, or if you miss the timing, at least block it. 7. You can mikiri counter the kick/thrust from the purple ninja guys. 8. You can hold block the entire duration of the fight and deflect by quickly releasinf and tapping L1, instead of waiting for an attack to deflect without blocking. That way if you're late for the deflect, atleast you will have blocked the attack. 9. Use stealth to clear the regular enemies surrounding a mini-boss. When you get overwhelmed, retreat to safety and wait for them to lose agro, then continue to clear. 10. Unlike Souls games, you don't lose "Souls, Echoes or Runes" when you die, instead you lose half of your coins and XP. The way to save XP points is to reach the next XP level, the number of levels doesn't get halved, but the blue xp meter always does. The way to save coins is to purchase coin purses and perserve the coins you've collected. It's always better to spend them, even for bullets (those yellow cross things) at the idol, then to lose them upon death. There's a small chance you don't lose anything when you die called the "Unseen Aid" but it's rare, and don't rely on it. Edit: Extra tip: Always try to have 1v1 fights if possible. This game isn't made well for fighting multiple enemies at once, but that's sometimes not possible Happy journey, I will enjoy watching every minute of it! :D
@miljann98
@miljann98 Жыл бұрын
Tip number 11: The red Japanese letters showing when an enemy is doing some attacks indicate eithee a thrust, a sweep or a grab attack. You should look at the animation of an enemy close to see which one he's doing. A thrust shoud be countered with a mikiri counter, but you can deflect it as well, but tha timing is veeery difficult. A sweep attack is countered by double jumping on an enemy and stoping them for extra posture damage. A grab attack is the only attack in the game you should be dodging with a dash. It's difficult to switch from souls to sekiro just for that reason. Dashing will get you killed, only use it for grab attacks. If you want movement, sprint is a better option to place yourself in a more advantagious position :D

For the mikiri counters, I believe you have to either be standing still when you press O or you can press O and forward on the stick. Basically you can’t be running around or moving sideways to get it. But it’s not a high-risk move at all once you get the hang of it. The window is similar to deflects and it does a butt load of posture damage, easily the most important skill on the tree. Another tip that helped me a lot: I had a hard time knowing when to stop swinging and go on the defensive when “dancing” with enemies. Pay attention to the clanks of the swords. You’ll hear a higher pitched clank for deflects (as opposed to blocks). This goes for enemies too. When you hear an enemy deflect you, they almost always follow with an attack so this is a que to stop swinging and go on the defensive. Man I love this game.

On this note, the tutorial simply instructs you to press Circle when a thrust attack lands, which does work, but I found it useful to think of it as "dashing directly towards the thrust attack". You're trying to literally step on the blade (or other thrusted object) that's coming towards you so it makes sense that you'd be dashing towards the attack, whereas if you just press Circle like the tutorial says you're technically dashing without providing a directional input which just feels weird to me as a Souls player. Edit: lol I just read through some of the comments and some people are saying exactly the opposite about performing the Mikiri counter. Mati I pray that you don't go mad with the conflicting advice haha. All I'll say is that the concept of dashing towards the thrust (so, usually forwards) has worked the best for me.

Despite the English voice acting being decent, I find the Japanese voice acting to be quite masterful with the excellent voice modulations and changing inflections. That isn't all that surprising because the Japanese voice actors are all quite accomplished actors. Sekiro's voice actor Daisuke Namikawa, for example has done works in such animes as Hunter X Hunter, Jojo's Bizza Adventures and Demon Slayer! You are a Shinobi, you've been taught to use every dirty tactic (aside from maybe glitches) you can think of to gain an advantage over your enemy. The game won't allow you to trivialize difficult fights by deaggroing a miniboss and returning for a deathblow multiple times, so you don't have to worry about "cheating" your way through the game.

@@matiasgago Also, if you block, you hear a dull sound, if you deflect you hear a sharp/higher-pitch? sound. You cannot get posture broken if you only deflect. And you can block / deflect EVERYTHING, Sekiro's Katana is made of Adamantium, really... except for those special red Kanji attacks (sweeps and grabs) where you have to dodge or jump. You can actually DEFLECT a Mikiri thrust. Also look for how the enemy moves and where their attack is, if they are about to land a hit, if you watch them carefully you will know when they are going to make a sweep or a thrust or grab, that way you can generally learn how to answer, whether to block / deflect or to jump, but you can also simply learn it by trying and sub-consciously memorising the timings. Hi Mati. At 1:05:52 the hint is trying to explain (in the worst of moments) something that can be very usefull, not just how to guard. Guarding in Sekiro has a mechanic that is totally inverted respect to dark souls shields: - in dark souls if you keep your guard up you recover stamina slower. - in sekiro if you keep your guard up you recover balance faster. This means the best thing you can do when idle, is keeping up the guard (also makes the scene cooler eheh).

@harumipup4093

Your posture bar recorvers faster when you hold block when an enemy is not attacking. The key timing for Mikiri counter is when the red DANGER sign above the enemy’s head is about to disappear.
@corvus9627
@corvus9627 Жыл бұрын
A lot of people tend to rely on the kanji for the Mikiri Counter timing, but that actually tends to confuse you more than it helps since a lot of enemies charge their thrusts while the Kanji appears, so it's definitely more helpful to focus on the attack itself and take the Kanji as only a warning. Especially since sweeps and grabs use the same Kanji. Also, it may not seem like it but it has a wider timing than the average deflect. This, however comes with a bigger punishment for failing since failing a deflect and executing a block breaks your posture, but failing a Mikiri basically just kicks away a lot of your health.

Hirata Estate is honestly my favourite area of the entire game. It taking place during a rainy night while you see fires burning, the song that's in the background which is sad, frightening, kinda creepy but also mysterious and the just overall dark hopeless tone. Also, it contains my favourite prosthetic and boss of the entire game :)

VG Matthew brings up in his Sekiro analysis that a lot of areas share the same color-pallete, so an area like Hirata Estate has a strong atmosphere that stands out due to focusing on a different angle entirely. It's a lot more gloomy, enemies are dirty bandits and thieves instead of the usual Ashina soldiers, and everything around you is set on fire. Aesthetically, I think it's one of the best locations in the game.

Love to see you enjoy the game, it is my favorite game of all time, an absolute masterpiece, even in the other titles of FromSoft I can name some things that could be done better, but in Sekiro I cannot. There would be an ocean of advice I could give you but that would spoil the fun and the pleasure of learning and conquering. So as someone with 1600 hours in these games the advice I'll give you for Sekiro is that you should try and use all your skills and prosthetics for each boss and area until you find one that works and then master it. Remember, there is always a tool that can make an encounter easier in this game. Good luck

Just a couple things, for completeness of your run: 1 After you defeated the spear shinobi hunter in the memory, past the idol, BEFORE the bridge and stairs, turn left, swim, up again, cut some bamboo and finally keep jumping between 2 narrow walls ;) you'll find something valuable for future bosses 2 Since you've done the chained ogre, I highly recommend you now finish the memory. It's like doing iudex gundyr in ds3 ;) 3. In point 1, also don't forget to kill carps while swimming to get carps scales, same for the main lake at beginning of memory. You will thank me later a LOT, those are also "currency". Best of luck! You got this mate!!

Hey Mati! If it makes you feel any better it took me over an hour to kill the Shinobi Hunter on my first playthrough, and the fact that you killed him without using the Mikiri Counter is insane. I'd definitely recommend practicing your Mikiri with the training dude at the temple, most of the super tough bosses in this game use thrust attacks and the Mikiri timing is a lot more generous than the deflect timing. You're seriously killing it though, keep up the great work!

I was glad that he quickly made the connection that he was supposed to get it for the Shinobi hunter when he saw the skill tree. But yeah, Mikiri Counter is so essential, it might as well have been part of the control scheme and not a skill you have to acquire. I've heard the argument that it would just overwhelm new players, but it's a non-negotiable. It's basically the only skill the game expects that you will have to navigate basic encounters.

Hey Mati, idk if you know this, but when you die you lose half of your sen AND half of your exp. However, you only lose half of your current exp, which means if you're lvl 2 in experience and you die, you won't go back to level 1, you will only lose half of what you have at level 2 and you'll never go down a level by dying. Which means, if you have a lot of experience, you should grind a little to level up to the next exp level, that way you lose waaaaaay less exp. Also, the purses that merchants sell are a way to avoid your money from vanishing when you die, because you actually store your money in a purse. Those were my ressource managing tips lmaoo, keep up the good work mati ! Love your videos as usual, gday to you.

On the purple kicking ninja: If you parry his kicks you lose shitloads of posture. You have to dodge the kicks. Also if you don't press attack immediately after a dodge, it doesn't count as a dodge counter attack and thus doesn't do as much posture damage to the enemy. In the first video you never did a dodge counter attack against the trainer due to not attacking quick enough. Quite often however after a dodge it is very effective to do a charged attack. That charged attack in general is a very good move due to lots of reach and power.

So I have a few tips 1# when you see the red kanji symbol look at the attack. Thrust, sweeps, and grabs look very different but the symbol can make you counter incorrectly. 2# the jump you do on an opponent is more efficient after they do a sweep attack. 3# blocking is still a very effective defense while you are figuring out an enemy’s attack pattern, and while holding the block your posture goes down much faster. 4# remember if you hesitate… you lose.

Think like a Shinobi my dude! Hit and run tactics work great, especially in areas like where the Shinobi Hunter was. There's basically no way to get through there without alerting someone so clear out the little guys and then leave. When they stop looking re-enter the area and attack the way YOU want to, not the way you're left with after they're inevitably alerted. Edit: You figured it out, my bad. Although you CAN make the miniboss forget you, you just have to leave the area. Also, the red warning sign is just that, a warning. It can mean sweep, stab, or throw so you still have to watch your opponent closely and respond accordingly. I can't stress enough how useful it would be for you to do the training and READ THE BOXES THAT POP UP. This is not Souls. It's Sekiro. Treat it like it's something entirely new to you because it honestly is.

Even in the open field, the probability of enemies detecting you when you are sneaking is significantly reduced. So always stay in sneak mode when you are on roofs or just checking out the enemy field. Plus: don‘t take on mobs face to face, no rushing in, take them down one by one, come up with a plan/strategy. When you die, you lose half of your earned exp meter on the top right, but don‘t lose already gained skill points. You also lose half your sen. It also makes sense to try to kill all enemies, especially in early game, they are kinda easy to kill and give you valuable exp to upgrade your skills. However: gaining a new upgrade point always needs more exp than the previous one. And most importantly: no dodging enemy attacks, as attacks are mostly tracking really well.
