Ok forgive the pedantism please, but this isn’t a Westend Musical, It was made by the RSC, based in Stratford and …”After a twelve-week trial run staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) at Stratford-upon-Avon from November 2010 to January 2011, it received its West End premiere on 24 November 2011 at the Cambridge Theatre and its Broadway premiere on 11 April 2013 at the Shubert Theatre.” (Wikipedia and personal experience of an early show)

I was so afraid that I would look at Alisha's portrayal of Matilda and think about nothing but Mara Wilson. However she held her own like a champ. Her voice is phenomenal for her age, I can't wait to see how it develops as she grows. When she was telling the story to Miss Phelps I was hanging on her every word. The bond between her and Miss Honey was beautiful, you can really tell how much these two care about each other. Bravo to both actresses for that. Emma Thompson though.... She was phenomenal. I have to say that this was well done. Emma Thompson did an amazing job as Agatha Trunchbull bringing out her essence and vitriol that the character had in the 1996 movie. Without question my favorite character in this musical. My favorite part was when all those Chokeys were revealed in true villain fashion. Next to that was Matilda telling this story not knowing it was true until she found out it was. Overall, I got what I wanted out of this. This production hit all the high points from the movie most of us watched when we were younger yet it was its own quirks which sets it apart from other works that came before it. My rating: I give this musical a 94/100. Highly recommend this to anyone who's seen the original 1996 movie and want a fresh version; or anyone who's read the books on this story.

*I LOVED Matilda: The Musical!* I watched it yesterday and it's simply impeccable work!! _Of course the Matilda (1996) adaptation holds first place in our hearts,_ but I don't think this is a question that should be asked because this question implies both movies could compete against each other for the public, when in fact, they can't!! _And I'll explain why from my point of view..._ They're both very distinct adaptations of the same book, one is more of a storytelling kids/family version and the other one is a very put together musical version, that actually go harder in places the 96 version kept in light, like Matilda's traumas , for example. Both Matildas are also very different from each other too, Alisha Weir accepted the challenge and did an excellent job on portraying the character in a way we couldn't ever possibly ask for Mara Wilson back while watching - So in the end we've got 2 different interpretations of the same character that are perfect and do not stand in the shadow of the other, I got chills. One of my biggest fears was that I wouldn't be able to enjoy this new version because of possible comparisons my brain would make to the classic one, and that didn't happened at all because they made it all so different even tho most situations were the same!!! I was so glad they were able to untie the org image we had of Matilda, to the point it looks like we're watching another original story. I was able to watch Matilda for the first time again, it was magical! In conclusion, Matilda (1996) and Matilda: The Musical are NOT comparable at all. They are two incredible adaptation that don't fit the same square, masterpieces of their own categories! _And now I have not only a favorite childhood classic but a favorite musical movie too, and both being adaptations of the same book!!!_ *What a crazy thing!!! 🤍*

The original theatrical release had a heavy emphasis on the sadness of Matilda's and Miss Honey's lives, here there's more of a focus on the horror where you're rooting for the nicer monster. My only disappointments were the auto-cancellation of a man playing Ms Trunchbull as is traditional and the cutting of the Mafia scene where Matilda decides not to follow in the Truncbull's footsteps.

The reason for a man playing Trunchbull was solely a logistical one: If you want a woman who can do the voice of a cackling witch, you'd probably have to pick someone between 50-60 years old. But then, she wouldn't be able to physically swing the little girl in the hammer throw. So the best alternative would have been to get a man instead. Here, since all throwing scenes are CGIed, there's no issue returning the role back to a woman. For me, I'm ambivalent about Ms Honey being black. Diversity and Inclusivity aside, which I'm fully supportive of, I thought it made it a bit too obvious about Magnus and his wife. But then again, it made the character swap in the scene in "My House" so much more poignant.

@@MikelSyn It's definitely the former. I also did not think the story Matilda told was actually real, just something she made up inspired by her actual life. That definitely adds to the disconnect between the couple (fictional) and Ms. Honey (real person)

I wasn't sure what to expect. I loved the Danny Devito movie from childhood, hadn't heard of the musical, and only watched this film version of the musical because someone else put it on. Going into it I wanted to give it a chance but didn't really think I would like it too much. Well, I was mistaken. This film was really well done. The kids were phenominal. Emma Thompson was unrecognizable. Ms. Honey was perfectly cast. The scenery, costumes and editing were all on point. Roald Dahls style really came through in all of it. Fantastical but not crazy. Really enjoyed this one. I don't know that any of the songs are earworms, but the dancing by the kids will definitely be remembered. Just really well done.

Honestly, the 1996 film absolutely pales in comparison to this adaptation. It has stellar performances, every song is done incredibly, the style is impeccable and is far preferable to the random sunny California vibe of the DeVito one. I loved this movie and it's one of my favorite films of the year.

Something I liked about songs like Miracle, When I Grow Up, and Revolting Children is the following: Miracle not only sets up the film but also kinda foreshadows how two types of parental type figures will be shown: the good and the revolting. Also, I love how the number doesn't technically hide revolting parents do exist. I love how when I grow up kinda addresses how kids can't wait to grow up but at the same time addresses that being a grown-up is not entirely easy. And then there's revolting children...in all honesty this song is even more revelant now than it was 11 years ago when the stage show was made.

I think with the musical version it really tapped into like the understanding of the child especially because in the 961 we only get a glimpse of like how it really is but in this musical version of the British version you get more of a feel of the background characters. Especially because of the emotional feeling at the time and I think it’s really good how these kids got a coach I especially the character Matilda and his Honey Because I felt like when I when I was watching her her character the person I was playing it she really tough into emotional of understanding words like to still figure out what you want in life and the struggles is

that’s because mrs wormwood was still gonna have that subplot, as well as the number loud, and rudolpho. i guess the film was too long though so they had to cut it out.

Love the new movie of the musical. Just wish they didn’t take “loud” out of it. That was such a good song Also we have to understand that the 2 Matilda movies aren’t related and you can’t compare them. The first movie is based off the book. The musical movie that just came out is based off of the stage musical that is based off the book. And even then some parts have been taken out like the song “loud” that Mrs wormwood sings in the stage musical

Danny DeVitos version is a cinematic classic and captured so much magic. It wasn't topped and im English so you would maybe presume im more inclined to be patriotic about my decision. Pam Ferris' Trunchbull is an iconic performance of a truly intimidating figure and captured the sinister presence perfectly. There are good things about the musical. In particular, Ms Honeys song which is truly heartbreaking. But the 90s movie will ultimately be the go to version in years to come. And rightly so.
