I cherish my childhood memories of Roald Dahl, but as an adult, I’m realizing his stuff wasn’t exactly groundbreaking. It was mostly (completely) about the innocent child beating the mean adults with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. And after reading Boy (his autobiography) I’m pretty sure he did it to get back at all the abusive authority figures he dealt with growing up, by creating straw-man versions of his mean teachers and childhood bullies in all his books. Meanwhile, every single protagonist has been an innocent child (a Mary Sue version of his younger self). Pretty much all of his books are his revenge on people that were already dead when he wrote them! Also, he sucks at drawing!
