I really hope that isn't a bacterial infection, in every case I had, if a mantis had a bacterial or fungal infection on the main part of the body, head, abdomen, thorax, it usually has a pretty low chance of surviving. If the black dot continues to spread, then it may be what it looks like. The small dots on her wings and abdomen are fine though, that is a pretty common sign of aging or they may have got some dirt on them.

I know zoos feed their mealworms and crickets a vitamin and mineral feed so they pass on the nutrients to, in your case your mantises. Been watching a program on zoos, mainly the Bronx zoo, New York, New York, and they have interesting chapters on different animals, a very good episode on reptiles and amphibians. The noisy cicada you caught was a male. It tickles when you get them in your hand. We had a lot of cicadas sometime in the 2004/05/06/07s. We had so many, I had to wear safety earplugs because we had so many and outside, they were so loud, it was painful. We also had cicada killer wasps. The cicadas we have here are larger than the ones you had, and the cicada killers were equally as large. These big wasps would find a cicada, sting it, then fly back to a tunnel they dug and place it in it's own chamber. It would go out and catch more, as well as digging a bigger and bigger tunnel/chambers. I'd go out at night and they would be digging and digging. They resembled the big killer wasps that are found in Japan and probably other Asian countries. They look scary, but totally ignore humans. I live in the Chicagoland suburbs, Schiller Park, zip code 60176. Really like your videos, and thank you so very much for the English subtitles. I wish you would leave them on the screen a little longer, I like to read your writing. Thank You!

Great videos. Mantis are enthralling animals. You've done an exemplary job of taming them. The infection may not be bacterial, but fungal. I work pretty extensively with invertebrates, and the spots you showed looked like fungal lesions. I noted that you both live within, and appear to provide the animals a humid environment. If this is true, it's likely that something from the wild specimen was transferred to the captive one, (Kiwi) and then grew. Not sure if you can do much now. I'd look into freshwater fish fungal treatments. These tend to be non-invasive, and relatively safe. Keep the videos coming.

I hope Kiwi will be okay. Last November I caught a praying mantis and brought it inside in a tank inside since I knew it would likely die if there were a cold snap, and it survived until a few weeks after it laid eggs in December. I don't know what the black spots are, but I don't think they would be a sign of old age in this case. My understanding is that usually praying mantises only die after a week or more after they lay their eggs.
