I like Mato's critique of "commentators". Over the years I think many commentators have claimed that some of Tal's brilliant sacrifices could have been defeated one way or another, or that they could not defeat a modern chess engine. However they neglect the fact that the only opponent one must defeat is the one sitting across the board.

I agree that it's too hard to learn from Tal's games, unless your brain is prepared to deal with incredible complexities (in which case you wouldn't need to learn from anybody).

It doesn't matter to me who was the best player. Since chess is competitive, the need to say who is best arises. But I think Mato is pointing out artistry and aesthetics.I prefer to look at the lineages. Obviously Tal owes a lot to Morphy. Innovators, geniuses, brilliant players all have deserve respect in all areas throughout history. In music I think of lineages of great opera singers and the important sax players. I don't see anyone as better, they all had they're unique voice, later artists built on what went before.

Engine says that 15.Bb5 was a mistake (going from +2.x zone to -0.x zone) and White should have played Nxe6. Then Black's mistake, after Tal found 18.Re1, was 18..Ra6. (Nc6 was indeed better; 19.Bxf6 is NOT winning for White - sorry Mato - because Qxe4 and after more exchanges, Black lives to fight.) Still, Black survives his mistake and 24.Nd7+ was inaccurate from White (better was Nh5+), so the position gets equal again. Black should have indeed played Ke7 to keep it there; Kg6 is a large mistake. It's no surprise if others later played Ke7 and lost; this is a complicated game and even the engine gasps for breath.
