Maton 808s: Blackwood vs. Michael Fix vs. Nashville

Good day! Jesse's at it again with new Maton 808 models in three different configurations - a Blackwood w/ Cutaway, Michael Fix (Sitka & Maple), and the Nashville (Sitka & Aussie Blackwood). I think the Matons sound great. To my ears the Nashville edges it for me, although I'm not a fan of satin finished bodies, I find them a bit noisy when recording (maybe I should sit still?). Glad to be one of the "Jesse talk more" brigade! Why shouldn't a guitar demo make me laugh?

The easiest method of overcoming any unnecessary garment noise on a satin guitar when recording is to play in the nude.

blackwood = open bright sharp sound, equal highs, mids, bases fix = quiter, but better mids nashville = nicer lows bases, darker sound

I like the sound but they seem bright to me too, I'm missing some lower end response. Don't know what mics he is using. They look like condensers but I which brand/quality? They aimed at the sound hole and roughly mid-neck which is a typical recording setup. Maybe they are place away from the guitar a bit too much? I'll have to check them out in person! Cheers.

Thanks for watching Gregory. The mics we use in the video are RODE NT5. The mic position may in fact be "too far" from the guitars, though (1) the Maton voicing is very balanced, not bass-dominant (think "clarity") and (2) in these videos the pick being used is Delrin, which is typically "bright" sounding. The guitars sound warmer when played with a casein (Hense) pick.

So ..i have to get one of these..I am not sure why the Nash is not more popular? Per the MicFix video he says that the queensland maple has less bass and = less feedback. Is that why? For home and low vol gigs, i would like the blackwood and get a bit more bass. Is that a fair assumption?

Yes, spot on. While Victorian Blackwood is a sister to our Koa, it is denser and warmer than their Queensland Maple. Both are generally cleaner with solid individual note definition.

SRS808...cedar top and blackwood back and sides...beautiful mellow tone without the spruce brightness.
