Great story thanks for that. I purchased a Michael Fix 808 in 2022 in Perth for that exact same reason, I kept coming back to it in the shop. It’s such a beautiful instrument.

He's very politely saying the truth about Matons. I own a messiah and love it. It's build very strong but is a bit quiet on the bass side compared to other builders. For quality acoustic sound I bought a Furch. My Maton is much easier to play and sounds better live than the furch. On top of that it feels so solid I don't hold back playing it, but it's great to have 2 gorgeous instrument that excel at something. Matons are so reliable and easy to play I'm considering getting a 2nd Maton. Most likely an artist, JR, TE or MF signature model.

Thanks Michael for this insights on your guitar model. Very interesting. I myself have a Tommy Emmanuel model but I also put on stainless steel frets some years ago when the original fets were worn out. It really has an effect on the sound and durability. All the best and hope to see you someday soon again in person on this planet.

This is a very interesting and helpful video. I do wish that your signature Maton would come with the wider saddle and stainless frets as standard as intonation and fret wear are often issues for me with acoustic guitars.
@iannottim
@iannottim 4 ай бұрын
Hi Aaron, fret wear is a major issue with me too, check out the JR signature 808 comes standard with larger stainless steel frets, I’ll be looking into that for my next gigging guitar for sure 👍

@@iannottim I have the JR right now but Iowa’s prefer a guitar with Sitka and Blackwood. I wish stainless was available on all of the models, at least as an option.

@@aaronshortmusic Totally understand, I wish they offered that on all models too. I’d be happy to pay the surcharge. Beats paying for a stainless refret for sure. I enjoy your videos by the way! Cheers

Thanks Michael. I've become addicted to the slim body after getting a CS Classic and a CS Traditional. My 808's felt cumbersome by comparison so I've sold the Messiah and I'm only keeping the 70th Anniversary because of the cutaway. I think that's about to change!

Thanks Michael, that was really interesting. I have played and really like your guitars. Unfortunately, out of my price range,so have gone with an SRS808, because I prefer the cedar top.Hope to see you back touring full time soon and would love to attend one of your workshops when it is feasible to run them again.

no, its the 'performer' series guitar that has the more shallow body - my production model is the same body depth as a standard 808.

What a truly wonderful story Michael. Thanks a lot. And your Maton model sounds amazing :-) Ohh, and sorry for asking to many technical questions, but I notice you have the mic in the middle of the soundhole, can you share your ideas behind that. Think they comes shipped with the mic further back?

I'm always experimenting - subtle movement changes the tone, & using a feedback buster changes it again, so lots of trial & error

something i think is a bit odd is, i have a gibson J35 with a natural finish. i play fingerstyle and i don't like the shape or the stripey scratch-plate, so i took it off, it came away really easily and the only marks is leftover from the stripes and the outline of the plate, but what is strange is that i left it in sunlight in the hope that it would fade to match the rest of the front, i did that for about three months and it didn't seem to make a difference, where the scratch-plate was is a slightly yellower tint. anyway, i put it back in the case (i have another nine guitars to mess around with) but when i took it out about two months later it has almost faded to the same colour throughout. it faded faster inside the case than in sunlight. i have a maton EBG808TE that i adore, and it's quirk is that if you stray from concert pitch, it sounds dead, like it has two year old strings, but, get it spot on concert pitch it comes alive. wonderful guitar, you can get harmonics practically anywhere on the fingerboard, i love it.

I've been playing a Michael Fix model for years in many solo and duo gigs (Tommy Emmanuel has signed mine). I've played Taylor and Martin in gigs and I'd never put down my Maton. Just as Micheal said - it's the guitar I always go to, and I never gig without it - everything else is a back-up. I loved hearing Michael's story! I do have a question - are all of the models the thinner body? I also see pictures of the MF model without a pick guard and sometime with a pick guard? I have a pick guard. And a note - when I first picked up the guitar in a store (in San Diego, CA), the action was ridiculously high and I had to really work the truss bar to get it playable. BTW, I'm also sold on ACUS amps - great for solo gigs!
@MichaelFix
@MichaelFix 3 жыл бұрын
Re thin body...no, that was a 1-off that maton built for me, the standard mf model is ‘regular 808’ thickness. I’ve noticed on early eu tours that many matons in music stores had high actions, probably due to sudden temperature changes, but in recent years they seem to be more stable, and I can randomly take one off the wall, & mostly they are ready to roll.

@@MichaelFix Thanks for the response! My action is better than I've had on Taylors even with heavier strings. This is a great guitar - it has changed my playing and inspired me like no other guitar ever has (and I've played for decades). Great to hear you playing it too! more inspiration

Finally :) Really great insights, Michael. I couldn't be happier with mine and it sounds like I got mine at the right time! It plays very well and record very easily. I don't need to stuff around to get a pleasing tone. The small body makes it very comfortable. The pearl logo inlay is beautiful as well. I love it, man! What strings do you prefer on yours?

I love my MicFix guitar. Please let me know what size / type ss frets you installed, and the bevel angle. I have a guitar with ss jumbos. The bevel at 45 degrees reaching toward the E strings and the slippery ss tends me to slip a finger off the E side. Thanks,

Michael, The video mentioned a performer series guitar that is thinner. Interested in purchasing a Michael Fix model, but am curious if the stock model has the thinner body that you discussed in the video. From the Grand Canyon State Scott
@MichaelFix

Hi Scott, the thin body was a special order, the stock model is the deeper 808 body. The stock thin body 808 is known as the ‘performer’. Hope this helps!

It seems to sound great acoustically as well. Which raises the question - what guitar do you chose to record, as opposed to perform, with?
