I am a fan of mr. Manu. I like his views and attitudes on history. His version on history is likely to be honest and unbiased. I bought 'danthasimhasanam'. My next book in my wish list is 'rebel sultan' and sure next to it is 'ganikayum italiyan brahmananum' Mr. Manu is brilliant and kerala adore having an young historian like him. 🌹🌹🌹

What a beautiful insight of our past and the transition to modernity. Was extremely impressed by Manu's article on Paliath Achan and recently I another on Parvaty Bai Verma afer her demise. One feels proud of the Travancore Royal family which had ushered in revolutionary changes in Kerala society, the benifits if which we are enjoying today. Any way I am going to buy that book immediately.

Two interest thoughts. How irrespective of the gender the the queen was called ' തമ്പുരാൻ ', even now in government offices the the lady is occupying a high bureaucratic position, is addressed by some as "Saar" (Mallu version of 'Sir'). Also Manu referred the husband of the queen as subject/അടിമ I think he meant more like പ്രജ

@@indianetizen some academicians, from personal conversations, consider surname which bear caste not as privilege, but the shame that bear. This might sound absurd. Some do consider it as a baggage that reminds them of the privileges they and their ancestors have had at the cost of the marginalised. I don't justify bearing caste surnames but have heard one or two people saying their reason. So just thought of bringing up a possibility. That's it.

Nairs are the most dominant community in kerala, There are over 45 lakh Nairs and around 70 lakh nair sub groups like Vilakkithala nair, chakkala nair etc. The total population of OBC and General nairs are more than 1 crore which is one third of total kerala population. The Ezhavas had only 15% population in kerala.

You don’t seem to be well read/informed.. Marumakkathyam existed among Thiyyas of North Malabar and also in some parts of Travancore. Even the Muslims of North Malabar/ Lakshadweep follow Marumakkathyam. In fact, after the abolition of Hindu joint family in 1976, Marumakkathyam now exists only among the Muslims referred to above. Curiously, these Muslims followed the Sharia while inheriting property/ self acquired of their father, and followed the Marumakkathyam law while inheriting ancestral property.

Ezhavas were never 70%.In old times nair population was much bigger. Nair population decreased due to forcible conversions during mysore invasion in malabar, conversions to Christianity in Travancore and later due to strip adherence to family planning.

The nair women or their children had no property rights to Namboodiiri. They weren't even allowed to call him father, let alone amass wealth. Sambadham was a way for namboodiri men other than the elder one who couldn't marry namboodiri women to cohabitate with Nairs and a way for Nair tharavads to continue their matrilineal system and have social advancement through relationship with higher caste men.
