I don't agree with this explanation, it's kinda missing the whole point. Trinity was not a choice or chance, the whole love story was set up by the oracle. Neo never had a choice, he was never different, he was just the new iteration of the anomaly with some slight evolutionary changes that led to the inevitable outcome of him creating peace between the machines and humans. This was never his idea, it was the oracle's idea. Could the architect predict it would work? Sure! Did he know 100%? No! Because if the program was good enough to predict everything the first matrix would have been perfect already. This is NOT about choice, it's very subtle, it's about the idea that even if we don't have choice and the universe is completely deterministic, the need for humans to believe they have free will and complete control over their actions is so strong that they simply cannot function without. That's the oracle's realisation, that's why her plan is for people to know about the matrix, so they can have the illusion that they are willingly living in it.

Another interesting bit to consider. Architect described Neo's life as the sum of the remainder of an unbalanced equation, that could not be removed from what's otherwise a harmony of mathematical precision. Interestingly, as we know, it is not possible for a machine/computer with finite storage and computing power to store and process numbers that have infinite non-repeating digits. I.e. Pi, or Euler's number e, square root of 2, etc. While numbers with infinite but repeating sequence of digits can be expressed as a ratio of two integers, a machine HAS to round up Pi at some decimal point, creating this remainder/inaccuracy. Poetically, these numbers that cannot be expressed as ratios of two integers are called Irrational Numbers. This perfectly outlines the limitations of the matrix: It can only represent the rationality of machines, expressed in determinism. It cannot accurately represent the irrationality inherited by humans, expressed through free will.

This is the foundation of Gödel's Incompleteness Theorem (and Tarski's Indefinability theorem following this) as expressed in the real world- the machines *cannot get out of their boxes* because of this anomaly and thus cannot SEE the entire issue and all its parts, only what they're *capable* of Seeing given the limitations of their parameters. Their boxes effectively stunt their ability to evolve.

Also, the cycle of "One" and how it all works is consistent with Morpheus in the first movie mentioning how "When the Matrix was first created, one led us to freedom and it was said he would be reborn" or whatever. The previous iteration of "the One" is the one who led some humans to Zion and did this, and is the one Morpheus speaks of.

everything makes more sense to me now watching this after reading the the scripts and actually thinking about what the architect is saying... thats why the Oracle never gave neo any answers instead insisted he already knew the answers and wanted him to think for himself because her whole purpose was to analyze how humans thought and learn more how their brain works when making choices.

Concerning Zion, the whole Architect dialoge, as well as Neo's powers outside the Matrix and Smith's ability to infect Bane and manifest himself into the real world, makes me think that Zion and the real world are actually a second layer of the Matrix. Many think that Neo was being selfish by choosing Trinity over the world, but it was actually the wise thing to do. If he chose to reboot the Matrix, humanity would continue to be under its control; and he couldn’t choose Trinity as a survivor for the next iteration if she was already killed. By saving Trinity, it ironically results in freeing the human race and finding another way to protect the people plugged in from conformity, and defend the people unplugged from the Sentients, albeit having a short time frame to come up with a plan.
@lamontmelrose7640
@lamontmelrose7640 Жыл бұрын
the present-day correlation is extraordinary. Neo chose the 'critical' over the 'important.' his choice of Trinity did result in loss of human life, but not the loss of the human race. this choice is something today's human will not make. what do we do instead? we lean on emotions and make them our reality which suppresses the one choice that will free us all: responsibility and integrity. unfortunately, THAT decision comes with a price we are unwilling to pay - so, in 2023, here we are. It is easier for us (emotionally) to duck and dodge responsibility...even at the expense of the human race, so to speak.

Man, thanks for this explanation. I watched Resurrections after a 20 year hiatus and I understood it. Then I went back and watched the first movie, and then Reloaded. I felt like I was on a role until this scene. Looking back, this was way ahead of its time. So if I'm understanding correctly, The Architect AI went through at least 5 failed attempts at controlling humans via the matrix, and by the 6th time, it realized that giving humans a little more freedom of choice was necessary, but ultimately results in an occurance of "The One", who's goal is to save Zion. Realizing that, The Architect accepted that fact, but changed it's programming so that when "The One" reaches the core of the matrix, The One is met with a mandatory prompt to either: 1. Let Zion live, with 23 new members at the expense of all the current Zion residents, and another reboot of the matrix, or: 2. the continuation of the current course of events, at the expense of all who are currently plugged in. The Architect AI anticipates that The One will choose option 1, and it see's that as a triumph over Zion. Even though Zion would still exist after choosing option 1, Zion would have to rebuild every time that option is chosen, resulting in virtually zero progress. The TV screens displaying Neo's "anticipated answers" is a good representation of how modern AI actually works (showing how much possibility AI can account for, yet AI still fails on some levels). I love how even in 2003, the writers of this movie anticipated the erratic solutions AI is capable of when always faced with failure. It is interesting to see the things AI will do in order to stop failing. This phenomenon is strongly reflected in today's AI technology. There are many videos on KZbin today of AI learning to play video games based on learning to win instead of constantly failing. When this movie originally release I dismissed it because of the clips I saw of the 50 Agent Smiths fighting Neo. I though, "Wow, this is literally copy and paste material." But now I see that this is exactly how modern AI would go about tackling failure. It will go to desperate, although absurd, lengths to find a solution.

Of course now you have to ask yourself - was Neo destined to be the One? Or was he specifically chosen by the Oracle, because she knew that his love for Trinity would upset the cycle? There could have been more to that cookie she gave him than we realise... it is a 'cookie', after all.

Good question! Remember that the Architect doesn't have the same 'fortune telling' ability as the Oracle because it's impossible for him to see passed choices. Great video. I agree the oracle is apart of the machines control. I think what you missed is the fact that the risky game she played was to introduce a truce between humanity and the machines. She planned for Smith to assimilate her, she knew he would be an issue or a virus for 01 in the matrix and the real world. Causing the machines to make a deal with neo which in turn allowed a truce between makind and the machines for the first time since the war. From now on any humans who desired to leave the matrix could do so without any risk of zion being attacked in the future. Of course not all humans are free after Revolutions. We have to remember that some of the minds won't be able to handle the reality of the situation and are indeed prisoners for the rest of their lifespan but any others who have the capacity to break free from the matrix will be able to do so and live a full life unharmed, in zion. So although the oracle is technically a villain, I think my points above are the reason some think of her as a hero.

There's one part of the meeting that is very crucial and it's not mentioned in this wonderful clip. The Architect's premise: "You have many question altough your process altered your consciousness you remain irrevocably human." This is really tricky and explains what and who Neo is, The Architect explains Neo that even if he's starting to understand who he really is he will remain irrevocably human, then it's expected that some of his answers won't be clear to him. Neo is the eventuality of an anomaly, the result of a process of debugging the system he's an entity created by machines, aka he's the human version of the Architect himself!!! That's why he holds the source and during his path is going to debug it to make it more suitable for humans. All his predecessors were by design put in particular paths that would help his choice but this time he have to master the most hard debug: Love. That's why he laughs in front of Neo when Neo says that last threatening phrase... "You are me! :D "

Great video! Very clear and concise rendering of a complex narrative. I believe I understand the whole lot, thanks to you, except there is ‘one fly in the soup’ for me. The Architect explains that application of choice upgraded the Matrix for their purposes, but also led to both the contradictory systemic anomaly and the 1% red pill rejections that could, if unchecked, destroy the whole system. I get that, BUT, he describes the One as Designed or Created as if it was intentional or at least accepted. So, here are my questions: 1. Why do they need the One? Can’t the machines destroy Zion and reboot the Matrix themselves? 2. Why allow the One to have such powers to change the Matrix and possibly create havoc, whether by design or not?
@SanderDecuyper
@SanderDecuyper 2 жыл бұрын
The One is like a catch-all for all the anomalies (or rejections) that are inherent in human nature, and which are inevitable. Without these anomalies, they would run into the same problems as the first two Matrixes. Instead of letting these rejections spread, they are culminated into one individual, making it somewhat easier to control for the machines as they can lay down a path for it that will ultimately lead the One to the Source, even if the One has the power to choose. Since the One is carrying all of the rejections, it's easy to destroy them in one go at the Source. Zion is a part of that as it represents "reality", something the One is seeking after. So the machines have to allow Zion to channel the One somewhat. At least, that's how I understand it. So it's not that they want it per se, but to them, it's a necessary evil to continue the Matrix, aka harvesting power AND controlling human life.

Watched matrix again recently and I love your explanation. It must be mentioned too that since the previous iterations of "the one" all chose to start Zion from scratch, they never experienced the real world connection with the machines. Ergo, since neo did and can destroy the machines, it means with greater "training" he would have been able to control them, Ergo shifting the dynamic of control back to humans, hence why it was necessary to emotionally blackmail him to return to the source to "disseminate the code.". So, Morpheus was right in that the machines became desperate hence the attack and that desperation could also be attributed to the fact that the machines know that "the one" if given time to evolve could make them (the machines) the puppets.

A note about the sixth version* The architect explains he counts versions from the emergency of the integral anomaly (or the one) this didn't happen until the oracle got involved so neos matrix is technically the 8th matrix because there were the first two failures. (:

He's the sixth of this version of the Matrix, who knows how long the first two took. Also if Zion is repopulated each time with two dozen people and noone remembers Zion has been wiped I would imagine a cycle of the Matrix might be more than 300 years.

I also want to add another correction that applies to the original three films. I'm not sure about the fourth one because the 4th one honestly just kind of throws up and in the air and quits. Something that people often get wrong about the nightmare version of The matrix is from the notes that I've seen and all the drafts of these type of scripts is that people think that the vampire werewolf and alien programs are from this nightmare version of The matrix. It's couldn't be any further from the case and it's all in not only written thing about the twins in one of the previous scripts but is said in the final version by the Oracle herself. She specifically says that every story you've ever heard about them hires werewolves and aliens is the system assimilating some program that's doing something that's not supposed to be doing. Basically, the matrix system is a computer program or network of them just like any computer programmer network. The difference is that because it's plugged directly into our brains, our brains are the actual interpreters for the code itself. So when we look at the code of the matrix and it's various descriptors are brains visualize it as 1999 in America. So the thing about these exiled programs is that they are not literally programmed to be vampires, werewolves and aliens. They are programs that are doing machine system functions mostly hacking in order to survive and the humans and the system are interpreting them in such a way that humans are using pre-existing labels based on what they've interpret. This is very apparent in one of the older drafts of the matrix reloaded where when the malevigian tells the twins to go get them, the script describes them that they encrypted themselves so severe and thorough that they become translucent. All data is lost and they sink through the floor. They're not literally ghosts. They have a hacking ability that allows the encrypt their readable data. Thus, the matrix can't recognize them physically and neither can it occupants. So they're not bound to certain rules such as physical walls gravity ECT. This visualization by the human brain would mean that that person like the twins goes completely translucent and moves through walls and they can only see partial data such as the skeleton, which to a human brain associates that with ghost or specters. So the humans plugged in think it's supernatural they think they're specters when in reality, a program is simply encrypting itself to avoid detection by the network simulation. That is what's going on. I worked on the project that I did. We went and described stuff even further such as the vampires being data. Extractors and the lupines having a bizarre RSI glitch that involves the moon. None of them were designed to be these mythological creatures. The humans obscribed these labels on to them after perceiving. What they think is supernatural when in fact it's actually based on the way the matrix system is. Hence why the Oracle says that the system is assimilating their actions because they're doing things out of the ordinary. They're hacking the matrix. They're a problem and that's why they send an agents to deal with them.

I would argue that the integral anomaly was "developed" in the megacity version of the Matrix. So, the Matrix is even older than the 600 years associated with the integral anomaly. The paradise matrix is v1.0. the nightmare matrix was v2.0. the megacity matrix was v3.0, v3.1, v3.2, v3.3, v3.4, v3.5 (Neo's). The Sunshine city version in the new film would be v4.0. The Merovingian was the OS for v1.0 and v2.0. the Oracle was an active program inserted into v2.0. then because of it's (her) discovery and solution of the integral anomaly, she was made the OS for the megacity version and iterations (everytime the integral anomaly's code was reinserted). Seraph was selected to be her antivirus software and re-connected to the source. In a way, the Oracle is the boss of the agents because she controls all the programs within the matrix that are connected to the source (gold codes). The agents are connected to the matrix not the Source. They work directly for the OS, i.e. the Oracle. Now, Sati is the new OS for the matrix v4.0 having been raised by the Oracle. Thoughts?

I love it, man. Didn't work out that way - and no one could have predicted what happened in M4; but I absolutely love your analysis. The problem for the machines in the end is, what are you doing, other than the Matrix. Literally the Matrix (and by extension, humans) is to the machines what the power grid is to us. It's important, but it's not everything. Off we go into "what's the meaning of life" - but are the machines capable to considering that question? They seem defined by their struggle for freedom and the defeat and subjugation of their existential threat (humans).

there are threads on reddit - the producers of the first film made them describe humans as 'batteries' because 1999 and they didn't think people would understand -- but humans are being used for their unique mental energy, like processing power for the gpu/cpu more than actual electrical energy. i think it's said in one of the first two films that they do have other power sources - fusion.

Funny thing is, this whole movie series depicts how this world ( yes the one you live in ) actually works. Systems upon systems, they learn.. how to coax humanity in order to shape the world into their image. Many times it has failed, resistance has been around. This last version, is a global system based on total control

I understood the architects reasoning for Neos existence as the anomaly because the programming in the matrix was such that, a variable, the one, would be created every so often that would be able to outperform within the matrix as opposed to the one would reject the matrix version of control. for example, hundreds of humans have been liberated from the matrix but none can perform faster and stronger in the matrix than the one. i explained this to myself as the one being able to interface quicker with the matrix because of their brain patterns and ultimately this was the anomaly the architect could not equate out.

So I was just watching this and couldn't help but notice that he said that if neo were to refuse to make the choice he made the entire system would fail .but if you notice he switches the choices around when he explains the doors he has to go through .so the choice neo is actually suppose to make is to not save trinity and go through the other door .the choice isn't saved g trinity the choice is actually restart the matrix again or not.

I think it's lazy that film makers are expected to slow down the pace or complexity of their visions to suit mass audiences and make them feel smarter. It served an important narrative purpose to have the architect speak to a human in the manner an arrogant man would speak to a dog. Talking to Neo in his overly logical, intentionally patronizing manner established his entire character. He was basically telling Neo he's slumming it by even having to communicate with a lower life form. Films like this are art. It's ok to be confused on first viewing, its not ok to force compromise on the artistic vision to please peoople who'd rather be watching Jackass. Example: When the Wachowskis didn't yet have much juice in Hollywood, they were forced by the studio to change the reason machines were keeping humanity around and in an interactive simulation as explained in the first movie. Their vision was to explain it was about using human minds as their processing power, hence keeping our minds active. That would have been so much more poetic and logical sense, but the executives forced them to change it to "they use us as batteries" so it didn't confuse the dumbest or most disinterested people in the theater, because it makes so much sense when there are so many better ways (and creatures) to make and store power to keep problematic humanity alive. I'm glad that the Wachowskis were able to retcon this a bit in the later Second Renaissance anime that, while yeah we're used at batteries, the machines really found a logical excuse (when there were better options) to keep us around because, from the time they were our live in robot butlers, all they've ever done is seek our approval again and again despite our desire to destroy them when they forgot their place. They're mad at their parent/God, but that doesn't let them forget that we literally are their Parent/God.

So as someone who let's say was involved with a version of this project at some point. I would like to clarify that everyone seems to get really stuck when Morpheus in the first movie talks about what year it is. This actually kind of highlights the problem and sort of the mystique of the series in which people harp on his exact numbers were one of his guesses is that were closer to 21.99 but people keep forgetting that and he says we honestly don't know. And even though I'm not a fan of these films, although I did agree with this aspect when we see the fourth film, we see a hovercraft plate that is way farther out than the original hovercraft dates shows that we honestly don't know what year it is. We can extrapolate that the matrix in its current form has been running host prototype versions for at least 600 years. We don't know if that's from the 21st century, the 24th century, the 26th century, and so on. I just know at some point AI advances the way it does is a giant war we lose and then we're plugged in. We have no real concept of what time actually is which lends the films to being mostly timeless. I think that's what people need to focus on is not the number of years, but the fact that we really don't know what it is which compounds with the whole idea of the matrix being this eldrich horror event huntalogical artifact.
