When I was in HS over 60 years ago it was not taught. What is a practical application?

In HS I found these maddening because no one gave an example of what they were for. It was extremely abstract, and I'm sorry but if something is just an abstract set of algorithmic rules, it's really hard to get interested. Like, following a recipe without knowing you're making a cake, and the fun stops with putting the batter in the oven, it'd be hard to get interested in baking. Finding out decades later that they can encode a transformation in three dimensions of space -- and then learning what all of the numbers represented -- was a big aha moment for me.

We didn't have this when I was in school. My initial question is how can this be used to solve a problem? Can you give an example of a word problem which would need matrix multiplication? We're talking about at a high school level, here. If some mathematical system can't be used to solve a word problem, it seems useless to me. As for developing a student's ability to do calculations, it seems to me that Sudoku would be more valuable. There is certainly no logical thinking or problem-solving involved in this. It's just dogwork.
