Even though the Hind is not a dedicated anti-tank attack helicopter like the Apache, it is still more than capable of killing tanks. Its just so versatile at doing various roles that it makes sense to build lots and lots of these things, rather than have a bunch of different helicopters. Rather than wasting time determining if there are choppers in the area of operations that can do a task, the Russians can send in the Hind and be sure that it can do whatever job is at hand. And its utility and ability to do most things well is what makes the Hind the best military helicopter overall.

The Hind is an amazing machine. The cockpits can be over pressured to keep out contaminants, it carries troops, it carries cargo, it attacks ground targets. It’s the basis for the Valkyrie attack craft in Warhammer 40k too.if it has a shortcoming it’s that it’s flight characteristics resemble a brick tied to a balloon.
@BeKindToBirds4 жыл бұрын
It's troop capacity is very low, it presents a very large thermal and radar signature, it is unable to operate effectively as a transport aircraft due to its low speed and low cargo lift capacity. It is hampered as an attack aircraft by it's mass, bulk, and poor electronic defense and offense. It can't see very well so can't function in the reconnaissance role and likely can't function very well as a tank hunter either. So it literally is just a flying BMP

I believe the Soviets looked extensively at the experience of the Huey in Vietnam specifically all of its shortcomings and vulnerabilities when developing this aircraft. It was designed to land troops in hotly contested areas under fire. The comparison with the Apache or the Super Cobra is not really apt as they are purely gunships used for close air support. and other types of ground attack missions. The Hind is a flying armored assault troop transport. The term "flying BMP" is quite accurate.
@BeKindToBirds4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately for Russia heavy and slow transport aircraft aren't as effective as light fast ones. In 99-2000;i was in Hungary as an American Army MP stationed at Tasar Airbase, i was working at gate 2 when a Hungarian Warrant officer pulled up in a Uaz (Russian style Jeep) and he was the OOD (officer of the day) and stepped out with the Hungarian soldiers and rendered him a salute at which time the Hungarian Sgt told me that they dont salute this rank and i told him that in the US we salute Warrants, the officer asked what i had said and the Sgt explained which got a smile from the officer, three days later i was on the flight line helping to unload some supplies and a Hungarian Private walked up and said his Crew Chief wished to talk to me, when i got in the building it was the Warrant and through the Private he asked me if i wished to see what he did, i told him i would very much like to see his job, he walked me out the back door and there sat a Mi-24D and he explained that he was the basically the crew chief (technician) for that Mi-24, after talking for a few he asked me if i would like to ride in one and i told i would love to, a week later my lieutenant woke me up and said "i dont know what you did but theres a Hungarian General in the CO's office looking for you so get over there NOW" I got dressed an ran over to the office and upon entering i saluted the General and then my CO, it seems that this Warrant had pulled some strings and i was going for a ride IN THE GUNNERS SEAT,

I do support your point here, the Hind gunship is indeed a very formidable weapons platform that can really provide the needed close airport to the Troops on the ground and basically it can do much of the Apache's role .Moreover it's multipurpose , that is something that's really important in the battlefield, a weapons platform that has more options

Many weapons platforms nowadays are multipurpose. But being actually good at all of them is something that only this helicopter did. In the airplane world, only aircraft I could think of that was equally good of a multipurpose weapons platform was the F14. It did not carry troops but it was a used for fleet air defence, ground attack, AWAC, long range missile defence and it starred as a movie star. Unfortunately for both, the are not cheap to make, or operate.

We use the Apache in the Dutch Royal Military,....and quite frankly, we hate it, it's unreliable at the worst of time's especially in desert and coastal environments. Way too many hours in maintenance vs flight time and too many accidents because the situation needs to be pushed and the Apache doesn't like that.

Quoting an aritcle isnt the whole story. Its obviously got his way of adding his opinion of it in there too. and most of these facts about its development show up on wikipedia, so it sounds to me the original article writer wasnt exactly doing his/her own work either. Wow, thank you very much for sharing this awesome video, as a teen I fought the Russian in Afghanistan, Russian army had endless choices of weapons and they used them all but I have to tell you the MI-24 was the most vicious machine specially in the mountains when the gunner release the rockets the echo would drop your heart to the ground, it took us two years to realize by accident to hit the stationary horizontal propeller to bring the MI-24 down which the Russian lost 189 of them in Afghanistan. This video took me back almost thirty eight years with few lifetime memoirs. Thanks again

Having fallen in love with this thing in DCS world, I love this. I'm really happy that you produced a 24 minute video with talking over random footage that was actually interesting and or relevant. Too many videos like this feature just the most random assortment of stock footage, often of the wrong freaking aircraft. Well done. More about the subject: military tech is funny. The cold war drove the rapid development of new vehicles. Tanks, planes, helicopters, etc. A-10, M1 Abrams, T-72, AH-64 Apache, CH-46 Chinook, UH-60 Blackhawk, THE HIND! All of these are mere shadows of their former selves. On the one hand, maybe everyone has gotten lazy in updating tech since these all came out. I like to think they're just so damn good. A solid airframe can carry whatever you need it to.
