Development of the Type 90 Japanese Main Battle Tank (MBT) commenced in 1976. It was intended to replace the Type 61 medium tanks in service with Japanese Ground Self-Defense Forces (JGSDF). The new tank was developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in cooperation with German Krauss-Maffei and MaK tank manufacturers. Consequently the tank has a number of external similarities with German Leopard 2. First prototype of the Type 90 was built in 1982. This MBT was officially adopted by the JGSDF in 1989 and the initial deliveries commenced in 1990. A full-scale production began in 1992. Production is now complete. The Type 90 is among the best MBTs in the world. Furthermore for a period of time it was the most expensive production MBT. Original Japanese army requirement was for 600 of these tanks, however only about 340 were built due to high unit price. This tank was never exported, as at the time Japan laws did not allow export of military equipment.
The Type 90 has an all-welded hull and turret. Its composite armor has superior resistance qualities. Half of the ammunition is stored in the turret bustle with blow-out panels. The Type 90 has a laser warning receiver, which can automatically trigger smoke grenade dischargers. Such protection system allows to reduce the chances of being hit by anti-tank missiles with semi-automatic laser guidance. The tank is fitted with NBC protection and automatic fire suppression systems.
This MBT is armed with German Rheinmetall Rh-M-120 120 mm smoothbore gun, which was produced in Japan under license by Japan Steel Works. It fires HEAT-MP and APFSDS-T rounds, but is also compatible with all standard NATO 120 mm tank ammunition.
This Type 90 tank is fitted with am autoloader. This feature permitted a three-man crew, as the loader was no longer needed. At the time presence of an autoloader was unusual feature. Before only Soviet tanks were fitted with automatic ammunition loading systems. Autoloaders were not used on contemporary Western tanks. However autoloaders of the Cold War era Soviet main battle tanks had one common problem as the ready-to-use ammunition was stored in the main compartment, rather than a separate compartment. In this case once the armor is penetrated it can trigger detonation of onboard ammunition. Japanese designers addressed this problem by relocating the autoloader in the turret bustle with blow-out panels. So ready-to-use ammunition is separated from the crew. Autoloader of the Type 90 tank holds 20 rounds, stored in the turret bustle that are ready to fire. The rest of ammunition is stored in front of the hull. The gun has to be depressed to 0 degrees to be loaded after each shot.
Fire control system of the Type 90 is reportedly more advanced than those used on the French Leclerc, German Leopard 2A5 and American M1A2 Abrams. Secondary armament consists of coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun and 12.7 mm heavy machine gun mounted on top of the roof. Vehicle has a crew of three, including commander, gunner and driver. The Type 90 main battle tank is powered by Mitsubishi 10ZG diesel engine, developing 1 500 horsepower. This MBT has a high power-to-weight ratio of 30 hp/ton. Vehicle has a hydropneumatic suspension. It allows this MBT to "kneel", giving a number of advantages. A dozer blade or mine rollers can be mounted at the front of the hull. Recently a new Type 10 main battle tank was developed by the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. It entered service with Japanese Ground Self-Defense Forces in 2012. However it is smaller and lighter than the Type 90. Also it has inferior armor protection, but is very agile and can be briefly deployed. The main role of the Type 10 is to support infantry with its firepower rather than to combat enemy tanks. The Type 10 replaces the ageing Type 74 and supplements the Type 90 tanks.
Hope you enjoy!!

@Tony Dinh Sorry dude... I actually own Chinese made firearms and they are definitely NOT shit. I also own a lot of Chinese made studio audio equipment and again, they are not shit and made increasingly to higher standards every year. QC is something that many Chinese industries are beginning to truly grasp especially when it comes to military hardware and hi-tech equipment. I also think that's bullshit that you saw a wheel come off. Any armored vehicle requires a number of restraining bolts on that wheel to keep it on. The chances of a failure of all of those bolts is very low if not next to impossible unless an entire mount is sheared off somehow on a huge rock or piece of concrete. BTW I served in the U.S. Army and have helped service a wide range of military vehicles out in the field. So I understand typical wear and tear on military vehicles and points of failure.

You know what is kinda hilarious? When I was like 12y/o I started reading the _Neon Genesis Evangelion_ Manga where the Type 74 still have some decent screen time. Somewhat later/parallel to this there was also the original Anime series where the then Type 90 had its introduction and now there's the, I think, 13y ongoing _Rebuild of Evangelion_ going on that started with the Type 90 and by now has introduced the Type 10. That show is taking too fuckin' long to come to a conclusion... But hey! 2020 appears to be the release date of the final movie soo... On a side note... Has Matsimus ever started a video with something like: _"What a piece of garbage!"_ instead of _"What a beast of a Tank"_ or _"What a glorious piece of tech!"_ ?

As the Type 90 will probably never need to enter actual combat unless the home islands are invaded, I thynk that it will jave a huge "home Court" advantage against even the Armata or Leopsrd 2 plus variants. I can even imagine both the Type 90 and T 10 working together to double team any adversary. In addition, any country tat invades Japan will have to keep in mind that they only know as mich of Japanese Defense Tech as the JSDF is willing to show or admit to. Any still hiffen, but already developed tech will naturally come as a nasty surprise.

The Type 10 isn't intended to replace the Type 90, but supplement the older tank and replace the Type 74. The Type 90 will continue to serve for the foreseeable future because of the high cost of the Type 10 (the same issue that plagued the Type 90 program, and the reason for the Type 74's long service life). I'm glad you pointed these facts out. Most people tend to overlook them, like so much about the JGSDF. Keep up the great work.

The Japanese really have an almost unique view of cost v benefit and an exceptionally long term view of self- reliance on weapons development. Look at the Mitsubishi F2 - a massive amount of time and effort spent to develop what a “little bit” better version of what pretty much ended up a very!! expensive F16😏. With almost never any intention of recouping cost from export sale they just don’t seem to care about price, they just seem to want to give their industries something to do.😎

Just one question, aren’t hydro pneumatic suspensions (and pretty much any type of suspensions able to change its geometry), super stressful to track tensioning?

anyone with an opinion is delisted on youtube. all i get recommended is fox news, people unboxing soy toys and "10 amazing toothpick hacks you wont believe" (I watch literally none of this) I tried searching for some technical resources related to by job this week (youtube and google) and about 30 results down on youtube was cartoons and minecraft, google barely had that many results, half of them didnt contain the search terms i was looking for. I watch none of this, and downvote them out of spite when it comes on in my autoplay. this site is gone, the fire is out. your channel is one of the few smoldering embers.

Type-90 was not intended to replace Type-74, it was designed for Hokkaido, the least mountainous island of Japan. Therefore Type 90 are only deployed at Hokkaido (besides some army school units), while around 170 Type-74 are still in service. was a good if not great tank in the 90s, modern gun with modern round, modern fcs with commanders panoramic sight, thermal gunners sight and hunter killer capability, composite armor, laser warning receiver (automatically triggering smoke dischurgers, thus technically an soft kill system), hydropneumatic suspension and the best power to weight ratio of all western mbts at this time. Just great. The problem is: up to this day, it is stuck in the early 90s. It didn't receive any extensive upgrades. No commanders thermal viewer, no really up to date battle management system, no add on armor, no L/55 gun and no modern rounds either. Type 90 are still equipped with JM33 APFSDS (license produced DM33) and JM12A1 heat (license produced DM12A1). The latter is intended to act as a multi purpose round to be used against light armored vehicles, infantry and so on, but Germany has phased out the Heat munitions in favor of HE rounds. More problematic is the JM33, introduced in 1987 the DM33 was a good round and is used all over the world, but it's penetration is nowadays really lacking. The reason for the lack of upgrades may be the focus of the jsdf to improve their air force and naval capabilities as well as the the higher priority of protecting the whole mainland instead of Hokkaido after the collapse of the UdSSR (which means that procurement of Type-10 would be more important than upgrading Type-90). By 2028 the jsdf wants to have reduced the number of tanks from 600 to just 300. That means that not only the remaining Type-74 are going to be phased out, but a huge number of the 341 Type-90 as well.

It's interesting looking at the Japanese procurement process, in many ways it seems so backwards. They spread out unit production over such long periods and make the thing costs two or three times more as a result. You said the same thing about the Type 89 IFV and as a result it costs more than the best IFV's out there but for dated equipment. Crazy! Let's hope they don't screw up the Type 10 and Type 16 MCV as bad. If they just build their required numbers in one or two batches (instead of over a decade or more) unit cost would be lower and they'd be able to buy MORE for the same financial cost. Speaking of which, Type 16 MCV or Type 75 soon Matt? The Type 75 in particular has so many variants it would be an interesting video, the MLRS and SPH are pretty cool vehicles :).

And we, the British, know all about the long and expensive tradition of designing, building, testing and evaluating and introducing home grown military hardware. Rest of NATO "Let's design and manufacture ammunition that is interchangeable so we can all work together." Great Britain "errrmmm....... let's not!"

I just knew this would bring out all the anime boys. The Japanese, maybe more so than any other major power, have never been much of a tank producing country. Their lack of even mediocre medium tanks in WW!! hurt them badly during fighting the the Pacific. They were forbidden to produce any kind of AFV after the war, and what was views as the minal defence needs of Japan was met by the US supplying Sherman and Chaffee tanks, both thought to be the most adaptable to Most Japanese terrain. It was only after the outbreak of the Korean war that Japan was given permission to produce an MBT and AFV. With a requirement to attempt to produce a Japanese designed and sourced tank. The Type 61 was the result. It didn't enter service until 1961, and the US T-48, which was the broadly similar US tank used as the basis for the Type 61, was already considered obsolescent at best as an MBT. It had a 90 mm gun at a time when almost all western MBT's had transitioned to the 105 mm gun. The Type 74 was another attempt to build a mostly Japanese sourced modern MBT, starting in 1962. IN an attempt to speed up design and production, the decision was taken to obtain a license to built the then ubiquitous Royal Ordnance L7 105mm cannon rather than repeat the same error made with the 90 mm gun of the Type 61. The JGSDF could have purchased the Leopard 1 or M60 Patton tanks in any numbers required, but the desire to produce a true Japanese MBT caused slow production and spiraling costs, and it took almost fourteen years to produce just 870 examples, far below the originally envisaged 2000 required. It was another Japanese MBT that was obsolescent by the time it entered service in numbers in the late 1970's. The Type 94 continued on this path, using a foreign 120 mm smoothbore gun but producing most the test of the components in Japan. While the result was a tank that at least wasn't obsolescent on entry to service, the usual spiraling costs combined with the Asian financial crisis and collapse of the Soviet Union, meant a mere 341 examples would be produced. It remains to be seen if the Japanese Type 10 will finally be the one produced at a small enough cost and with enough technology to break this downward spiral of Japanese tank design.
