During the Iran - Iraq war, Iraqi T62's easily penetrated the front turret armor of Iranian Chieftains at normal combat ranges with APFSDS rounds. This was a shock to the British, which led to the Stillbrew armor upgrade for British Chieftain tanks.

A note about the Tiran; this name was given to several Israeli-captured and modified Russian tanks ranging from the T-54 to the T-62, the T-62 being designated "Tiran-6". The tank used in the movie "The Beast of War" for example is a Ti-67 Tiran which is a T-55 fitted with a western-designed 105mm gun in place of the Soviet 100mm gun and the Commander's DShK replaced with a Browning M2HB. When I first saw the movie, I mistook the tank for a T-62 because of the gun.

Not sure you are aware , but at 10:04, despite having a fume extractor, this is a T-54 type tank. Note the gap between the first and second road wheels, along with the mushroom shaped ventilator on top of the turret. You mention the layout of the road wheels in the video, and you may be purposely showing a T-54 in order to illustrate those differences, but I wasn't sure. Regardless, a quick internet search shows that this exact tank is a Chinese Type 59 being displayed at Tank Fest. This short video clip is a great example that really illustrates your point. If a person were to look at just the fume extractor, they would assume this is a T-62. Thanks for the great videos and keep up the good work!

In the 80. Slovakia was one of the countries who producting many tanks. We first build 34,85 in the40. and 50. Than some bmp1 and t72 tanks and of course modernized tanks such as t55am2. And in the past we were in the third place behind the USA and Soviet Union who producting so many armored wehicles. And in the past we have actualy more tanks than USA but not for long time. I mean for country small Like this it was nice. But is shame now we dont have many of this tanks today. We have just fiew of them. Over all nice vid mate.

Kind of like our car Companies in the us, many are sharing axles, Transmissions, engines, frames, and much more. Seems like the Russians are having the same problem as the Germans in WW2 which was too many manufacturers making to many different variants increasing cost dramatically and reducing production. The manufacturers should adopt a platform to work with but have packages they can add to their own version.

Matsimus: Thank You for another thought provoking video. T-62 illustrates the Russian problem - especially in these days. Russia has incredible problems financing their armoured forces. It seem like - at the moment - that the T-14 Armata is going nowhere. Provided they get the kinks sorted out, the introduction of the Armata has at least been postponed. This refers back to another video with Matsimus: The one discussing the merits/flaws of updating existing western tanks. It is allways a consideration if an update - with its inherent drawbacks is sufficient to do the job. In case of the T-62 it clearly wasn't in so far, as they got creamed meeting Israeli Centurions. I believe the Soviet Union then stood in the same problem as Russia does with the Armata today. The Armata is clearly a better tank than the T-72 (even in its updated version); but the main problem is there: With the falling oil prices it is extreemly unlikely that Russia will be able to afford the Armata in anything but token numbers. It is like the proverbial Tiger tank that had the allies worried no end. It was simply to expensive to build - let alone transport around. The next illustration is the T-64/T-65 where the T-62 should hold the fort untill the T-64/T-65 was build in sufficient numbers. Problem was that sufficients numbers of a to expensive tank - and the Sovjet economy was all the time similarly strained - was to heavy a burden on the budget. The solution was the T-72 tank. The T-72 is a "budget-freindly" tank, but it demanded hoardes of them to get the job done. Besides: I saw that the canadian (with F-18) are involved in an exercise with the A-10 Warthog, ostenciably against the fast patrol boats of the Iranians.

Many sources claim Vietnam had T-62 or T-72 but I haven't seen picture of any in internet, book or magazine. Only T-55 and news of recently acquired T-90. Only the T-55/54 and the Type 63 amphibious tank or PT-76 used in the third Indo-China war in Cambodia by vietnam. They had to deploy it if they possess some. BTW, I've trained eyes to distinguish the models of soviet tanks.

T-55 and T-62 and very noticeably different, even in M form. ALL T-62’s have a stretched area behind the turret. The T-55 has a much more centric turret position where as the T-62’s turret is biased forward of center. Also I’m not sure about the T-62 being a stop gap design. The development project was underway before the T-64’s. I think the continued production of the T-62 was a stop gap measure but actual design and development was it’s own project which ended up be overshadowed by the T-64 which was the HMS dreadnaught of the MBT world. The T-62 was designed and developed by Ural whereas the T-64 was designed and developed by KMDB. Additional, the Soviet Military allowed Ural access to the T-64’a tech. Ural then took the T-64’s advantages and applied them to the T-62 chassis and developed the T-72. Also to my knowledge the T-64 was never exported. KMDB was based in Ukraine and this is why Ukraine has the T-64 after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

It's more a testament to how superior a HEAT round is, to a steel armor of any thickness. All it took to stop these is a little composite add-on, but during the late 60s-70s no tank was truly safe from chemical rounds.

There was an idea to use T-62 in our army, but it was rejected, when even soviet experts said that T-62 wasn't so good in many aspects like T-55. But, in which book you find that Steven Zaloga wrote T-62 was manufacutred in Czechoslovakia? He has many books, but I looked immediately into T-62 Main Battle Tank 1965-2005 and he wrote only that US intelligence believed that Czechoslovakia manufactured T-62 tanks and it appears to have been a mistake according on Czech and Slovak informations. 3:20 - This tank had also Bulgaria, but in small numbers. 13:15 Well, I never read/heard about that, but maybe...Yet Israelis found out the gun can't be loading when gun elevation is +3,5° (and for loader was whole process difficult - cramped space, ammo must be loading into gun with great force, and at the end, loader must affirm loaded gun with button).

both Poland and Chechoslovakia evaluated T-62, in the mid-60s it was indeed improvment over T-55, but too costly in the end; also Soviets said that new tank (I mean T-72 or other predicted T-64 alternative back then) will be available few years later, and in the 1978-1979 both countries aquired first T-72s

The main battle tanks of Russia were designed simply just like old Soviet designs. Simple designs that produce big numbers. The Cold War tactics of the Soviet Union was to produce a basic tank in great numbers to over come N.A.T.O. In a quick lightning attack. Unfortunately the Russian main battle tank kept the rounded turret that had an advantage of deflecting shell hits but limited crew response to firing. The turret limited its fire rate. Don’t get me wrong it is a deadly tank but that’s why Russia came up with the T-14 Armata. Basically put the T models are to old to survive on the modern battlefield. This was proven many times in various conflicts with western tanks.

During my time north and east of Jalalabad there wasn’t a day I didn’t see a burnt out hull. Asalabad’s western perimeter was littered with bmp’s and T series tanks. A sight to behold for sure. Horsepower doesn't have mutch say in top speed unless you change the transmission as well. The engine can only go as fast as the transmission allows it to. Lets say you have an old VW Golf with a top speed of 120kmh. you can add a turbo to the engine, it will make the car accelerate faster because of more horsepower, but if you go faster than 120kmh the engine will blow up because the transmission is what allowed it to go just 120kmh.

I wouldn't say that it wasn't necessarily horrible for tank on tank fighting. More of it wasn't employed properly to its strengths. We know that most Russian tanks were designed with limited gun elevation and depression, making this tough to fight an uphill battle. This is partly the reason why the Israelis cause such high losses at the Battle of Golan Heights. But on a relatively flat terrain, I am sure it was a force to be reckon with at its time.

ive always understood the T-62 to be classed as a medium tank by the soviets, with their first true MBT being the T-64. also, you can tell the difference between a T-55 and T-62 by looking a the turrets as well as the hull, the T-55 has a slightly taller, narrower turret (not quite a circle), and the roof has what looks like 2 angled welded plates , wheras the T-62 has pretty much a circular turret with a lower profile other than the commanders hatch, in one single cast. admittedly it would be hard to tell the difference from a distance.

T-62 wasn't licence made in Czechoslovakia. But Czechoslovakian peoples army (from now ČSLA) rumor said that ČSLA has 8 T-62 or T-64 nobody really know for comanding other tanks (T-54/55 and all types that ČSLA have) because of better radios. But really nobody knows what happened to them after '89 or '93 .

Mat, First, thank you for another very informative video. Second, please forgive the formatting - YT hates my Surface tablet and removes all the paragraph breaks., That said, the more powerful engine not increasing the top speed isn't too uncommon. Speed is based in part on the power of the engine, but also on gearing of the transmission final drive/transfer case/rear axle. For example, if the original engine has a maximum RPM of 2500rpm (assuming diesel, but any substitution works) and the new motor has the same redline, then the maximum speed won't change. What changes is how long it takes to achieve maximum speed in any given gear and improved torque for low-speed operation. Maximum speed only changes when the replacement engine has a different maximum RPM. Whether higher or lower, the maximum speed will change with the max engine revs. This is assuming that the vehicles' gearing is such that it can achieve max RPM in top gear. Ideally, what you see with an engine upgrade is increased performance in rough terrain and low speed maneuvering. The catch is that if the new engine has more available power than the rest of the power train was designed for, then you're going to see increased breakage / poorer reliability in the rest of the power train.

The fact that the canadians are exercising in team with the A-10 brings back memories of the A-10 that ALLWAYs had an anti invasion role. When the A-10 was new - yes I am that old - I saw it in an anti- invasion exercise in Denmark. Now I also saw the USMarines training invasion in Lithuania - the coastline is comparable - very long shoaling beach with sand. I cringed: One A-10 would have massakred the marines swimming ashore. That is one objective of an exercise: To see if the enemy has that option?

Im curious as to the H.P. upgrade? The top speed remained the same probably due to the transmission and final drive gearing not being changed. However Im thinking the ability to maneuver may have improved. Top speed being good. But im betting the crews would really like being able to go from 0 to even 10 Mph faster would be well liked. Imagine setting static at road side and hearing the dreaded sound of a jet or I would think even more dreaded womp womp womp of rotor blades Being able to get to cover faster or traversing the hull faster to maneuver to engage an enemy tank quicker is what that H.P. increase afforded the tank. Yes turret traverse speed is very important in a engagement, but getting your hull into cover is mabe more important as to staying alive to shoot is a good thing. There is also this may have been an upgrade for future weight increases from module additions. At any rate I always liked the T62 and T55 I also liked the British Crusader. At the age of 8. My Dad was an E5 8th Infantry Chemical Corps HQ Co. He had taught basic at Ft Jackson S.C. But we were then stationed to Aberdeen Proving Grounds. Edgewood Arsenal in Md. Aberdeen P.G.? This boy has hit puberty early and with clock work. But the Armor that post had. All U.S. Armor as it was developed And all enemy and even peace time Armor the U.S. captured bought or five finger discounted came there to be tested.I climbed on and played on everything from T34s 34/85s All the WWII German Pzs Models III IV I even have a scar on my right shin from missing the tooth on a Panthers drive sprocket. You have no idea the size of some of these things till next to one. The IS series? HUGE!!! The little French Renault FT17 looks like a VW Bug next to some. They were Americas !st MBT And What got General George C SCott ummm Patton lol cut his teeth on. 9:56 thats not a T-62 but a chinese Type 59. Pretty much a T-55 with a knockoff L7 105 gun To easily identify a T-54 from a T-62 it to look at the turret shape. The T-62 has a complete round turret while the T-54 has more of a droplet shape.

Thanks mate yeah I was in Iraq and most of the T62a I saw fell victim to the high speed penetrator on the Abrams also I play world of tanks blitz and the 62a is really good medium 😊

Czechoslovakian T-62 a myth? I believe there is one in Fort Benning, Georgia and one in Bovington, UK. Whether these were only assembled in Czechoslovakia or fully made I cannot say for certain, but all the parts are labeled in Latin letters as well as Cyrillic. I find it very strange for Russians to be so helpful. Most Russian equipment in my country, notably helicopters and planes, has Cyrillic labels and younger soldiers who do not read the Cyrillic script use stickers to mark the gauges. That's why I think it is quite possible that these tanks were made in Czechoslovakia

THe part where you say that it's not an anti-tank tank but an infantry support tank literally encompasses the Soviet CONOPS for tanks. To Soviets tank v tank warfare isn't primary role for the tanks. That was the role of the artillery and aircraft. And they are right to say that since from WW2 and all the way through to now, tank losses are at least 80% due to enemy CAS planes and attack helicopters.

The soviet tank program was the opposite of their political stance. The soviet block opted for continues production with evolution of their tanks where as the Western counterparts opted for revolution, with big changes per generation.
