-- INTRODUCTION --
Enjoying the quiet summer months, we travelled across Japan to Miyakonojo and the Kirishima sankei region to visit one of the last wooden weapon workshops of Japan: “Matsuzaki Bokuto Seisakujo”.
The founder, Master Matsuzaki Yoshinori switched from agricultural tools to the manufacture of Bokken 1969. The tradition is perpetuated today by the founder’s son, Master Matsuzaki Yoshiaki, assisted by his son, Matsuzaki Yoshimasa.

Wonderful man, loved the part where he said something along the lines of "if I could sell them for 25k yen, I would make 1000 pieces and have fun the rest of the year!" I would study under him, as a dedicated iaidoka I have a connection to the bokken he makes, I can speak Japanese as well, but not a JP citizen.

Thank you for your comment. Master Matsuzaki is currently hospitalized, we don't know yet if he will get back to work. But if there's opportunities for internship in the future, we'll do a public communication about it.

@@seidobudostudies I wish Master Matsuzaki and his family the best. The work of his and other workshops are really something special. A set of his products arrived at my home today purchased through Seido, they are quite beautiful. I look forward to the communication. Its so nice to know that Seido has such a close relationship with their supplier workshops.

9:55 what a wonderful reaction! :) It's hard to hear about the business problems related to this work. I've heard in other videos on Japan that it's difficult for companies to raise prices on their items, but as we know, life itself always gets more expensive so I really hope these master craftsmen can do what needs to be done in order to continue. Quality hand-crafted items should always carry a heavier price in our modern mass-produced world. Good luck to them!

安い木刀だと、左右の削りがズレていたり、断面の楕円が歪だったりします。志のある職人さんの質の高い木刀を応援します。なかなか何本も買うものではありませんが、手に取ってよく見極めて、相応の値段のものを買います。
