I'm a spastic quadriplegic and I was born that way. Due to some other unfortunate life circumstances, it took me until I was around 12 to realize That I was going to be in a wheelchair the rest of my life and that's OK! Walking wasn't worth the pain and suffering it was causing me when I did it and it wasn't worth the limitations it imposed on me. I'm probably going to have to use a power chair most of the time for the rest of my life, but I know I tried my best with walking and I know I tried being in my manual chair 24/7 (that didn't work for the same reason. )Those 2 things didn't really work out for me, But that doesn't mean I can't work hard at following my dreams and live a full life. I'm happy for this dude, and I'm glad he got where he got, But if you're a disabled person and you're reading this right now, don't feel bad if you don't achieve the same amount of function. Work with what you have. Pushing your body ridiculously hard is not always the answer. I learned that the hard way. You can live a full and happy life regardless of your level of function if you put your work into taking what you have and making something out of it. As much as I like this story, I think a lot of these inspirational videos give some disabled people the wrong idea. I'm not saying you should not work hard to make your function better if you can, I'm just saying it's not the end of the world if it doesn't get better.

Hey Matt you have a good story to tell .your brother gave you the best advice in the world. I got her back in 1983 when I was 19 playing football for Bloomsburg University I’m 54 now. I was at C-5 C6 now I’m drop down to a C7C8 incomplete. One things for sure you just have to take every day one day at a time that’s it have your moment and when you do at the moment but it just be a moment and you keep driving on like your brother said. The one thing i’d like to suggest to you is to incorporate having armrest they are very very important they act like a stabilizer, they act as third hand or third arm, they give you great stability and make doing weight transfers much easier. Without having armrests you’re dead weight in your chair and the affect your posture as well as putting to much pressure on your butt bone. I’m thinking about doing a video one day to show you guys the importance of having arm rest until then hang in there and keep taking one day at a time

Goddamn, Matt, watching your video, I feel like I am the one with the disability. I've had to deal with so much less but never had one-tenth the courage and guts you have. You may not wear a cape but you sure are my Superhero. You have my prayers and best wishes.

As inspiring as a lot of these stories are, I think it’s bullshit to imply people shouldn’t be able to feel whatever they’re feeling. You just got paralyzed? And you’re upset? Well, shit, too bad, better take ten and shake it off and slap a smile on that face, nobody like a negative person. Whatever you’re going through, it might be the worst thing that’s ever happened to you, and comparison just isn’t right. I see so many “I complain about way too much” on these videos. Or “I have no reason to be depressed.” Everyone experiences things differently. If you have depression, you’ll be depressed- that’s reason enough. Everyone is entitled to feel what they feel for as long as they need to feel it. Trying to hide it is unhealthy and being told to hide it is insensitive at best.

Just now subscribed to this site because of your video. Very inspiring, honest, open, sincere and brave; that takes courage. I admire your persistence; you're a terrific example. I had to chuckle when you described part of your recovery: "I washed it down with Gatorade," and, "I washed it down with root beer. . . ." So American, it was very touching for some reason. Thank you and God bless you and yours!

Such a sad thing. But I am so thankful you are so positive. I have also had huge trials in my life. But I am also am inspired to be positive. People I tell my story to are always like "you are so cheerful and smiling, it is amazing you have turned out so well". I have always told them this, everyone must choose to be happy. You have to make the most of everyday and move on from the past. What is done, is done. You can wither choose to be sour and swell on it for the rest of life. Or you can choose to use your store to inspire others. My story in a nut shell is this. At 4 I was taken out if my biological home and later adapted. I was severely abused. Was almost killed at least 2 times, was unwanted by anyone until we came to my new parents, was told I would never be live a normal life, and suffered from PTSD until the age if 16. But the key thing is during all of this I was and still am very cheerful. I share my story to let others know you can move on and be an inspiration, even if you yourself are feeling low. You will find by cheering others you yourself will feel better.
