AHHH I love him so much. I'm seeing him in October. I saw him once back in 2014 or so when he was touring Telluric, and this will be my second time. Everytime he tours in the states I will BE THERE.

his tone and grit and raw and flawless lingering is INSANE! I thought his song was about envy and revenge in the lyric "I'm gonna shine a light on your darker side like you did for mine" as it's ironically "live at karma studios" but now you've opened my mind up! Now I'm shook! maybe it's about a person who has died or a friend who is struggling with mental health and he couldn't be there to help the way that this ambiguous person could as you suggested It could be schizophrenia as a lyric "talking to the walls" - so powerful!

I was lucky to attend a small fan gig last week in Sydney where Matt talked about songs on his new album "Everything's Fine" and For Real is a special song and about a friend who is very much apart of this new album . Incredible to watch someone else’s reaction with clearly a lot more knowledge and depth in singing. But still draw the same tenderness and realness as I felt. He is AMAZING! I have been lucky enough to witness many of his shows live and it’s mind blowing. Great review. Keep up the good work

Thanks for this reaction as it sent me off to look at his new album. Having had a listen to some but not all of it thus far my early faves are Better than that and Everything's fine. You have a really beautiful voice yourself y'know...rich with resonance😁👍

I wonder if this song is about him? Like he is talking to a past version of him. That was my feeling.

Pretty sure this song is about how he walked away from his faith but is now finding it again. It’s like a Q&A with God. The album is wanting to call people in the church back to a higher standard as believers. I truly doubt he will ever call himself a Christian until he is truly walking 100% in step with God again, but this album has so many call backs to his songs from when he was walking with the Lord & is full of intense confessionals, as well as a lot of really straight Biblical language, lines like “I’m gonna shine a light on your darkest side like you did for mine” really make this obvious (just capitalize the second Y & he’s talking to God - literally I dare you to go back through his music & capitalize Y’s & you’ll see just how much he’s not been able to get away from it in his lyrics). I could be totally wrong, but as a believer myself I’ve had many dreams about him over the years & I’ve expressed them to people who are like 2 degrees of separation from Matt who have come back & told me they were 100% accurate. I’ve low key been praying for a song like Better Than That because I feel like the healing he has received over the last few years means he can lead people out of the darkness & into the light. If you do an album reaction you’ll see what I mean!!!

Patricia I like that idea. Personally I thought it was more anecdotal, likely about a friend who he worked with in some capacity in the music industry, who’s since quit maybe, and the song is his kind of plea to make up or closing the distance between them. “Villifying the work place,” “dad giving up his guitar,” “but music holds your hand.” But that could very well be having a conversation with himself, which is a really interesting concept and I can see how it could possibly be his own issues with the industry and whatnot. @Storytime with Yaz As for better than that, my own understanding was that it was about addiction. But that’s the beauty of music, art and good lyricism, it’s for people to interpret themselves and find their own connections and meanings. Overall I think this has been Matt’s most honest album yet lyrically, he’s always had a way of being somewhat allusive and meticulous in his lyricism in my opinion which really did leave things up to the listeners interpretation. I know he got a co writer on a lot of (or all?) the tracks and I think she really did help evolve his own writing style.

@@Quinny129 I agree - I do truly think that Better Than That is about addiction & finding the way out… I think he’s lived that which is why it’s so haunting. He states so in Vitamin which was one of his Covid singles. What I mean to say about that is that I was shown just what that struggle looked like in a dream once and I prayed he’d be able to open up & talk about it, which is what happened 🙏🏻 I’m now realizing that wasn’t truly clear in my above comment!
