My favorite part of the Jack Nicholson story is how he was so invested in making that one scene great, he says, “I come from the Roger Corman school, so I’m not gonna add any time to your budget.” Such a sign of humility from Jack. Most want to get paid for what they contribute, but Jack already figured that into his own price tag, hence why he does these contributions for seemingly free. Smart and in a way, giving and honest with who he is working with. You pay him a lot, and he will deliver a lot more than you even asked for.

@@MrWATCHthisWAY But not by much for a few minutes of film, and even less if you shoot digital. Furthermore, if you are on the same set, shooting the same scene, then you have already sunk costs as far as set, crew, equipment, etc. Nicholson's suggestions added no cost on top of the budget already being spent. Which is why the original comment is valid.

These are the stories about acting and movies I love to hear. I love hearing about how they work as professionals, not just celebrities, and how they craft these stories. And how the business works: one of the things Jack said was he want going to add to the budget or do anything that would require some kind of new set or more stage hands or extras, he slightly modified a scene in a way that didn’t add to the budget by changing the character from a man to a woman and then he just barely increases the price by having Scorsese leave the camera rolling and the microphones on. That’s not just acting, that’s craftsmanship.

I thought Ray's comment at the end of the scene scene was a little off and now I understand why! Nolan cut out the necrophilia joke, but he kept the response. I can see why he did it - it's a stomach wrenching joke - but honestly, the scene would have been better if he kept it.

I think this is so important for writers, actors and filmmakers to watch because it makes you look at what you’re doing in a scene and figure out a way to make it better, what we should all think about. And to have those options is fantastic, even if you decide not to use them all, having these wonderful choices in post is one of the greatest gifts an actor can give you. What makes this so amazing is Jack gave incredible options that all of them could have been used but Martin was able to cherry pick the absolute best parts which he did. I agree with what he left out. The part he left out is as important as the ones he kept because you can’t have this brilliant points in the scene without the whole. Getting there means some portions may not make it. His choice to edit it, makes what Jack gave even better and I’m sure Jack would agree. The process is fascinating because there is a lot of intent and purpose that make up a great scene and the choices both the actor and director have to make. If Martin kept it all, the scene would be very different, more vulgar so Martin chose to dial it down a bit but you wouldn’t have that brilliant line at the end which still works even though the actor was replying to the line that didn’t make it. Knowing how to change it up is only given because Jack gave Martin choices and that’s because Martin allowed his actor the freedom to experiment and give suggestions.

you actually can go back to that era, and honestly, having a space for a comic like Dice again (where the audience is in a fervor, screaming punchlines etc) would be welcome, in my opinion. Also Seinfeld does it all the time. The key is that the material needs to be 1) at least somewhat evergreen (rare in comedy these days, minus Gaffigan and some others) and 2) absolutely LETHAL (like "the streets have no name," to continue the U2 reference).
