Matt was my stepdad from the time I was two years old. He was a very nice guy, humble and truly warm hearted. He used to make my school lunches and he drew funny things on the paper bags. I was six when he performed this song on television.

Never forget I saw him perform once probably about 1958 at a lounge (name long forgotten) on Virgil and I think Santa Monica Blvd in LA. I was a teenager but using bogus ID to visit the jazz clubs in LA, Jazz City, Memory Lane, Peacock Alley, the Haig and of course the Lighthouse. Whenever I hear “Everything Happens To Me” on KJazz never fails to take me back.

Matt is amazing, none compare. I was fortunate to take a few years of lessons with Matt in the late 70's. I saved most everything, and keep playing what i learned, the style of music is not heard enough these days.

Reminded me of my youth when I listened to Matt play at the Captains Table with my date at the corner of 3rd and LaCienaga

That blue flattened chord underneath the phrase “we fell in love completely” is a composing masterstroke. Matt Dennis was a fabulous songwriter, pianist and singer - his tunes remain firm favourites of hip musicians.

I know what you mean on that little segment. I have many of his recordings. His High hat club in 1955 is the best. I have him on the remote radio show; ALL STAR PARADE OF BIG BANDS 1956. (Small groups too.)(Otrcat) mp3.

Yea just goes to show how much you can do with a 7th chord

Yes, that chord is so sublime, so climactic but you want it to last forever.

One of my favourite songs performed by one of the best of the pianist/composer/vocalists of his time, Matt Dennis. And the fact of him being featured on Rosemary Clooney's programme indicates the high esteem in which he was held. If ever a video fell under the heading of un-earthed treasure, it is this one.

Couldn't agree with you more. His melancholy melodies always go right for the heart.

Superb! I think I prefer this to Sinatra's version.

Billie Holiday and Frank Sinatra (among others) have covered this sweet tune. I love the verse...BTW if you want to see more of Matt Dennis "live", there s a film noir, on YT: THE BIGAMIST, and the scene where Edmond O'Brien and his lady (Ida Lupino) have a romantic dance ...the pianist in the lounge is..Matt Dennis. Check it out.

Sigh. Quite wonderful! Quite musical and charming, and I love that sweet, sweet ending. I do love when song writers sit at the piano and sing their own material. See Cy Coleman sing "Why Try to Change me Now?"

So good we have the recorded legacy, but it still kills me that the era of civilized, intelligent melodic music is gone with the wind. I'm 62, but decided early on to experience everyone live, before they died, or their careers ended... and I DID, starting at 14.

Totally agree with you. Today's "music" what a misnomer is pure crap!

I agree with you completely. Perhaps there is a small chance that the artist Laufey ("From the Start") will cultivate and grow a taste for more intelligent, melodic music in the modern mass audience.
