Definitely a speech. Sentimental ,subjective, that what is true to Matt, as opposed to what is true. The fact remains from a standpoint of belief, it would be more beneficial for everyone to believe everything will be met with consequences. He argues that escaping justice in both instances are equivalent. He merely borrows her worldview while abandoning his own as to not to have to be honest about his own worldview. Typical atheism, evades the ideology of atheism and merely addresses something else. Let's face it, atheism wants humans to believe that you only suffer consequences if you get caught. And let's be honest, in most parts of the world consequences mostly happen to those without the power to avoid societies condemnation.
@61btod9 жыл бұрын
Vernon Smithjr First of all, atheism doesn't *have* a ideology; it's a position on just one issue (whether or not a God exists). It doesn't cover anything else. Second, "it would be more beneficial for everyone to believe everything will be met with consequences"? How? Merely *believing* that bad people will get what's coming to them no matter what has no effect on the real world. As Matt explains, the whole idea of cosmic justice is nothing more than a security blanket, made up by the religious to cope with living in an indifferent universe where sometimes, evil goes unpunished. It's a revenge fantasy. Wishful thinking that accomplishes nothing.

Nope, you guys have it all wrong. Because of the suffering and the unequal opportunities in this life, ultimately God’s universal “salvific will” will be realized; in other words, God's biblical universal desire for all people to be saved (1 Timothy 2:4) will be realized and hence no one will go to hell. However, people who are not in "sincere” ignorance will still go to Heaven, but only after purification time in purgatory (a catholic doctrine), which is like a jail/prison term in which the duration depends on the severity of the wrongdoing.
@maxanguiano69358 жыл бұрын
***** Yes, I'm serious. Furthermore, Matt D., along with many of his followers, including you, I suspect, interprets the bible in a literal fashion; and, as a result, he routinely and triumphantly exclaims that the bible makes statements that are scientifically false. But, this is erroneous because if one does not read scripture in a “philosophical” fashion one will see only myths and contradictions, in addition to statements that are scientifically false. The Bible is not a collection of “inerrant” oracles and historical reports, each true in the same way as every other, each subject to only one level of interpretation, and all perfectly in agreement with one another-and, much less, it certainly is not a science book.
@maxanguiano69358 жыл бұрын
***** "Hey - it's your bible and you believe it literally so pull up your big daddy pants and get to it!... I guess that since you believe in the bible literally" Where are you getting that from? All along I've been claiming that it is erroneous to interpret the bible in a literal fashion. For instance, the creation narratives of Genesis must not be treated literally, but must be read allegorically-which, incidentally, does not mean read as stories with codes to be decrypted but simply read as stories whose value lies in the spiritual truths or mysteries to which they can be seen as pointing, and certainly not as historical records with scientific descriptions of the origin of the world. One would have to be rather simple to imagine that there could have been “days” before the creation of the sun, or that God literally planted an orchard with physical trees whose fruits conferred wisdom or eternal life, or that God liked to amble through his garden in the gloaming, or that Adam could have hidden from him behind a tree. These are figural tales, communicating spiritual mysteries, and certainly not historical records. Are you also always this pugnacious and petulant?

carpy1970 - I know, right? Dillahunty "does one better" than Hitchens with the following: He is a panelist of the Atheist Experience in Austin, Texas, which is a weekly show in which people can call the panelists to discuss religion. In other words, he INTERACTS with the callers and they have an open discussion about their beliefs. Hitchens appears to be rather un-approachable, which undoubtedly puts people off. And in all the videos of Hitchens which I have watched, I have yet to see one where Hitchens is interacting with people. I have only seen him as a lecturer - talking AT people - or as a panelist of so-called experts.
@BarbaraManor8 жыл бұрын
...not quite Hitchens :-) but in a different way VERY GOOD! While Hitchens reduced big religious names to pulp in an unprecedented elegant and strait but also clever way not ever falling for or taking their BS but showing for what it is - was/is always a joy to watch taking theists apart. Matt is known more for his videos taking calls from "basic" Christians. Here one can witness the damage Religion does to "the people" first hand. They would have never understood the intellectual and strait way Hitchens used because they have no background. Their ramblings are not hard to take apart. Most of them know nothing and just "feel" something - whatever... and feel helpless when confronted with critical and logic thinking. They do often not understand even what Matt is talking about because they only hear the ramblings at church and have - so it seems - never given this topic "so dear and important to them" one serious thought or questioning critically what it is they are made to believe. But since their "believes" have such a detrimental impact it is worth to set something, that in the end helps them too, against it! Thank you Matt for at least trying to do that!

i would like to point out Matt isn't necessarily intelligent, he just uses his head and thinks about things a little more then most. whilst that quality is still admiral in itself it shouldn't be attributed to intelligence in my opinion. i guess what i am trying to say is anyone is capable of this thought process. anyone can be an atheist but it seems only a select few people who "god" has created to purposely be irrational are supposedly chosen to live for eternity in paradise. after all god made us atheists so we would reject him himself. it doesn't take intelligence to be an atheist just common sense.
@7891Kman10 жыл бұрын
heteng That's a decent point but I would have to go against it. Matt is intelligent because he can think very quickly on his feet and come up with a great response that is logical. I think it does take intelligence to be atheist. you are able to hear all the evidence and points and still be able to sort through the crap and come to a logical conclusion. Thinking is intelligence especially when the ideas presented are of quality. I don't know how else you would describe intelligence without being able to dismiss bullshit and arrive at logical conclusions. He thinks quickly in the moment and can articulate it brilliantly. How is that not considered intelligence?
@TheHappyCatsTail10 жыл бұрын
7891Kman well i was thinking in terms of the official definition of "intelligence" which means your ability to learn new information but i can definitely see what you mean. i think it would be more so attributed to wisdom and experience not intelligence. but wisdom an intelligence generally coincide anyway. either way all this is kinda pointless technicality's :P i personally don't think it takes intelligence to be an atheist just the desire to know things and understand. religion on the other hand REQUIRES that you be gullible and content without knowledge. BUT Matt has the correct response every time and he can pin point exactly what a theists thought process is and how they have come to their conclusions and that is definitely admirable. he remains a valuable asset to the atheist community's everywhere not just HIS local and i admire him greatly.

@Quietmedows028 жыл бұрын
2consider Why am I not surprised that you don't understand philosophy? If your definition of philosophy is only deep intellectual thought then your definition of philosophy is wrong. I just gave you the definition of philosophy so by definition this is considered philosophy, there's no argument here. If you wish to be in denial, foolish as that maybe, then be my guest. Contemplating existence and reality is by definition philosophy. Many of the Greek philosophers even questioned similar topics such as whether or not god is omnipotent and things like that. Now while I do agree with you that it may not be as deep and intellectual as other philosophy related questions, philosophy is not subjected to ONLY deep intellectual thought. The great philosophers would be more than satisfied with this, for as I said earlier, this is just one form of philosophy and does not represent philosophy as a whole. So even if philosophy was JUST deep intellectual thought, they'd have nothing to be ashamed about. In either case, you're wrong.
@Quietmedows028 жыл бұрын
2consider If you believe they would Rip Matt Dillahunty to shreds then you clearly are ignorant of the intent of the philosophers. Why would they want to Rip Matt, and individual who would probably share the same way of thinking, to shreds intellectually? These philosophers aren't wild animals that you can just throw in a pen and compete intellectually for glory. Do not confuse the intent of these philosophers with the primitive intents of your own. Anyone would common sense would agree they would most likely get along quite well. Nevertheless, I can see this conversation is getting us no where as you refuse to admit your fault do to your inflated ego, believe what you'd like and remain in denial. I'm done reasoning with the brainless likes of you. “There are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn't true; the other is to refuse to believe what is true.” -Soren Kierkegaard.

This is beautiful. He didn't just reiterate that wishing it doesn't make it so, he pointed out that the God and afterlife posited by Christianity aren't even desirable things to wish for. As I'm sure someone else has said, thank God there's no god.

I grew up in a catholic envionment & i use to believe, over the years as iv'e gotten older my belief in god & religion have deminished, i would love to believe that there is a super being that is responsible for all life, but until i see him peek his head down from the sky, or from out a window, or from around a corner, or under my dinner table, im sorry but i won't believe in a god until i see him.

We are lucky to have Matt in our lifetime. His continued inspiration to all seeking real truth and hope for a brighter tomorrow. On KZbin I discovered great minds like Richard Feynman, Carl Sagan and Christopher Hitchens. Sadly they are no longer with us, but thankfully Matt continues this line of great communicators and free thinkers.

Nobody is an outspoken atheist against a particular religion without at the very least doing more research then you have. Clearly.

This was very beautifully articulated and expressed in a simple way to understand. Family guy mocked the idea of accepting jesus just to be forgiven of all terrible crimes and it begs the question: How does a criminal who’s accepted jesus help those who were hurt or killed by said criminal? That’s a loophole if I’ve ever heard one and it goes to show the church and religion is more concerned with more followers rather than the well being of the innocent.

For God to forgive the heinous acts of a serial killer, and grant him eternal life, while giving no heed to the victims, their families, or the damage inflicted upon society, is as selfish, short sighted, and unjust as it comes.

Matt makes perfect sense. Our time here is finite so lets make the best of it. After so many years as a "believer" I now feel liberated to see existence for what it is, warts and all. Not only do I not believe in a creator or an afterlife, I do don't feel any need for them either.
