this man is the reason i picked up the flute when i was only 11yrs old. i'm 27 now and i play for the love of it and it's just so much fun. he is an inspiration.

My word... Matt Molloy never ceases to amaze me with his playing... He's incredible when playing dance tunes at any speed, but he puts so much feeling into airs...

I have one in my shop right now, great flutes! Even signed by Sidney Pratten.
@ism448516 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure the flute in the clip is the Pratten's Perfected mentioned by "gorkys6" below. What a great set by the greatest player!

The player that comes in at the end is using "pipers grip". Pipers play with their fingers flat on the chanter.

Quel magnifique vibrato diaphragmatique sur son slow air ! (5:55 => 8:17).

"The Gravel Walk." You can find a version on a very early Boys of the Lough album by fiddles tuned an octave apart as I recall.

masterful. He's really amazing. I always laugh when I see someone with a beard playing flute though. I don't know why, I just can't help myself.
@OakAged7214 жыл бұрын
@Nanoune69Fr Technically the volume pulse via diaphragm is tremolo, and vibrato is pitch pulsing via a finger over a lower tone hole. But yes, magnificent examples of both here.

Regarding the comments about Elvis Costello, he appeared on this "episode" of the show, but doesn't appear in this clip. Apart from Donal Lunny and Arty McGlynn, other musicians include Sean Og Potts on pipes (son of Sean Potts of the Chieftains), Cormac Breathnach on flute (better known as a low-whistle player with the band Deiseal), Nollaig Casey on fiddle (Arty McGlynn's wife) and Damien Quinn on bodhran (former member of the band Cian). Can't remember the names of the two additional percussionists.
@conanmcdonnell92659 жыл бұрын
Noel Eccles is one of the percussionists, and I think the other guy's surname is White, but I could be wrong.

Why must the go on an ruin it towards the end with bongos and synthesizers and stuff? Up until then, flutetastic perfection.

I have a friend who worships Elvis Costello and cannot believe that this is him in this set. The guitar player looks like Elvis when he was married to the woman from the POGUES. Can you help me with this?

rafael aguilar walker ya need new ears then
@davidvincent3802 жыл бұрын
I started with low whistle, it sounds nice, but the flute has so much more expression, different timbres... also high-pitched notes are much easier to play pianissimo...
