The cream of the crop, both of them. I've heard Donnelly play as though he is playing on another planet. But the amazing thing is that he can play with his feet planted firmly on Earth too. McGoldrick's playing is superb also.

@Patchbod I'm not a fluter myself and there might well be more to it, but generally when people talk about piper's grip they mean that someone is using the undersides of their fingers to cover the holes rather than their fingertips. If you look at some clips of uillean pipers you'll notice that's how they hold the chanter.

Hot damn! The quality is just fantastic! I think Dezi has picked up a few Martin Hayesisms (and Kevin Burkeisms too).

Thanks for uploading. Both are incredible musicians. Saw McGoldrick playing with Mark Knopfler last year. I really respect his patience while Dezi is playing on his own. I'm sure his fingers would be just itching to join in.

@wolfman49er You are correct ...even a good classical player can have problems with the different''blow'' on a wooden instrument .I recently gave a wooden Boehm flute head (thinned) to a trad player and he did not like it either. I also found this to be the case with a clasical player(professional) of a metal Boehm model. That seems to be the way it is ....though there are exceptions!

I can only guess the 2 people who "disliked" this had a momentary spasm of the fingers and clicked it by accident.

its hard to keep the feet still
@guijs16 жыл бұрын
why would you
@yekdeli12 жыл бұрын
@wolfman49er Well, not necessarily the "proper" way...I play with the flute to the right, but if you ARE lefty, then you can play that way too! I play Boehm flute too, and do not find it particularly hard to blow the wooden flute...harder are the fingering changes. I have a keyless and have to place my fingers in wickedly odd positions (for a silver flute player) to get proper notes. Even a keyed flute would probably not help much as the keys are not the same! Love the Irish flute though!

A left handed flute?
@usfenderfsdlx15 жыл бұрын
oh, interesting. I also play flute with piper's grip. i just can't get that flute crip. hurts my fingers and wrist.
@Flutix15 жыл бұрын
Well, technically every keyed wooden flute is custom made, at great cost and duration. I suppose asking for a leftie wouldn't make much difference. I've never seen anyone else play flute with a "piper" grip (second pad of fingers). I'm amazed he can get any speed that way, but there it is in front of my eyes. Incredible.

Thats so weird that he is left handed
@upkilt16 жыл бұрын
Lots of left-handed flute players in trad.
@McPiper191416 жыл бұрын
not really. We just wired backwards. really, most people who play reverse actually write and do other stuff with their dominant "right" hand.

The pipers grip isn't necessarily the second pad of fingers....
