Played this at my dads funeral last November, since then I have been listening to more of Matts music, he was one of the best voices to come out of this country but sadly the most overlooked. I read his Biography, which was written by his daughter Michele, it highlighted how he struggled to make it in this country and that he never had a number one hit, which surprised me greatly. Sad that he left us too soon.

Just occasionally a song is written and performed to such perfection that it should be set in titanium and never tried to improve. This is one such moment. Matt was one of the greatest, if not the actual greatest, soft ballad singer of all time.

I never forgot that it's a great melody, lyric & vocal, that actually eased the pain of life, as it is... If i'd not been able to let go, i'd not have lived my life... I had a soft spot for Matt, he was a talented singer who sang so many lovely songs. I have a collection of his music and often listen 🎧 to them to bring himself back. This song, 'Softly As I Leave You', is based on a true story. A husband fell asleep, in the hospital, at the bedside of his very ill wife. As he slept, she wrote a long note to him before she passed away. He kept the note, of course. After her funeral he decided to have the note turned into a song.
