@grooverunner, I agree but I can't stand F Sinatra. If you knew about his private life and how he loves to play the big honcho etc.. In Sydney they wanted to kill him and the FBI had him on their list for running money for the mop and it goes on and on.

As an American, My two favorite songs are by British artists. Helen Shapiro's "You Don't Know" and Matt Munro's Softly As I Leave You". He sings with such emotion and clarity that he leaves me with goose bumps. What a talent! Thank you for putting this on you tube. It is beautiful!!!

Played this at my dads funeral last November, since then I have been listening to more of Matts music, he was one of the best voices to come out of this country but sadly the most overlooked. I read his Biography, which was written by his daughter Michele, it highlighted how he struggled to make it in this country and that he never had a number one hit, which surprised me greatly. Sad that he left us too soon.

He used to be known as the "Singing Bus Driver" in the East End of London. My uncle was a friend of his and they used to go around all the pubs to sing. He used to say what a smashing (lovely) fellow he was and what a great voice. I could listen to him all day. RIP Matt.

Woke up from a vivid dream of my papa who went to be with the Lord 8 years ago. This song was playing in the dream while he was talking to me. I'm just familiar with this song because it would usually play on his favorite radio station in d afternoon while having siesta. I never knew d meaning of this song until I searched for it here on KZbin. When I finally did, I broke down and cried. Because I think this is what he really wanted to say to me. 💔😔

I would love to see & hear the interpretation of "Walk Away" in a dance portrayed by some of the dancers on Dancing With The Stars. I have the visual in my head and a box of tissues in my hand. My tears will always flow when I hear this song & watch the visuals along with it. Priceless. My heart has been broken many times. But I am nearly 89 years old so I have survived my experiences in my life. It still hurts. I am totally thankful for Peter who has done a magnificent job of uploading these great songs sung by one of the greatest singers which is Matt Monro. Irreplaceable!

Just occasionally a song is written and performed to such perfection that it should be set in titanium and never tried to improve. This is one such moment. This and a small number of songs make me cry every time. On My Own, Somewhere, and just a couple of others do that to me everytime. Matt was one of the greatest, if not the actual greatest, soft ballad singer of all time.

My parents were divorcing, when i first heard this song as an 11/12 year old, in '68/'69, done as a cover by Rod McKuen (or Sinatra ?). I never forgot that it's a great melody, lyric & vocal, that actually eased the pain of life, as it is... If i'd not been able to let go, i'd not have lived my life... (Even if, we never actually let go...) & if kids aren't 'self-determined,' i don't know who would be, lol :) Thanks a lot for posting. ♡ 🎶 ♡ 🎶 🤗

Matt Monroe - Softly As I Leave You There (with lyrics) Matt has always sung a beautiful but sad song such as this one. He shows so well his feelings in this emotional 😭 song. I had a soft spot for Matt, he was a talented singer who sang so many lovely songs. I have a collection of his music and often listen 🎧 to them to bring himself back. He left a space that no one else can fill, unfortunately. A very sad loss to the music industry. Mmmm 😋

a great singer who was not to fulfil his potential but had this voice that was unique to him and was in the top 20 in the 60s

Well done mretonboy. your graphics fit the song beautifully. This one of Matts songs never ever leaves you, once you've heard it - and it's ingrained into my head. When I leave this world and this mortal body, this song of Matt's has to be played. I want to take it to heaven with me

Just one of many, many lovely songs from Matt Monro. He made goosebumps appear for me in my 'teens and nothing has changed; the very second his beautiful voice begins any one of his songs you can feel yourself relax and emotions wash over you. I love absolutely everything he ever sang and they are eternal in voice, music and lyrics.

This song, 'Softly As I Leave You', is based on a true story. A husband fell asleep, in the hospital, at the bedside of his very ill wife. As he slept, she wrote a long note to him before she passed away. He kept the note, of course. After her funeral he decided to have the note turned into a song.

I read somewhere a long time back that Sammy Davis JR said in an interview that Matt Monro was one of his favourite singers . I thought that was a really nice compliment and testament to MR Monro,s talent. Beautiful song delivered by an expert.
