Guitarist Matt Munisteri has been a Fretboard Journal favorite for years. It’s no wonder he was one of the first artists we invited to the 2015 Fretboard Summit. On this video, he stops by our offices for a short interview and music performance. Munisteri tells the FJ’s Scott Krashan about his Gibson L-5 (and the story behind that unique pickguard), his Bacon & Day six-string banjo and his plans for performing at the first-ever Fretboard Summit, taking place November 6-8, 2015 at the Costanoa resort in the Bay Area.

Being unable to attend the Fretboard Summit, I must regard this excellent interview and performance as the next best thing. I'm a great admirer of Matt's playing; he's one of the finest jazz guitarists, in the grand old tradition, that I've heard -- it's only fitting that he should be playing that beautiful L-5.

at @11:44 he is so right, old archtops do stiffen up if they aren't played, but they do tend to wake up when they are being played regularly. I've noticed this so many times.

When did American guitar manufacturers/luthiers first start making f-holed archtop guitars? What was the first year of that style? I know that, in the video/interview, Matt seems to say that his L-5 was part of a series of instruments produced between 1924 and 1929, but that's as far as L-5s are concerned. What I want to know is WHO was the FIRST maker of archtopped, f-holed acoustic guitars, and when?

Can you guys please work on your sound quality? As a podcast targeted to musicians, you fall behind a cage fighting commentator/comedian (Joe Rogan) and a convicted felon and reformed drug addict/comedian (Joey Diaz) in your sound quality-this is sad. This issue continues to this day.

Yes, I totally agree!! Altogether I was probably able to understand maybe about 10% of the "Interview" at best! Incredibly frustrating to say the least! I would suggest changing the title of this video to "A Couple of Tunes". Then, if they are interested in adding more content, I would highly suggest investing in some, at the very least, Adequate sound equipment! Very sad and very frustrating! Such very good content, and so unspeakably poorly presented.
