As someone who has coached Kanon, he's a good kid. Let's not speculate that he's some kind of crazy person or locker room cancer, but he can let his emotions get the best of him at times and is very expressive on the court. He's got some bad voices in his ear trying to sway him in a negative direction and some of the people who care about him (while still being very supportive and well-intentioned) think they have down their plan for him. He's immature, but he's got a good heart

Braden and Loyer were NOT promised roles in any way. No shot Paint imagined Fletcher starting at the 2 over Brandon Newman. I know they didn’t really have a point and the door was open for Braden to walk into but there was still morty who was recruited as a point, even though he sucks. Paint wasn’t trying to “get the last laugh” when “outing” the truth of the Catchings situation. He’s an honest man and he was being honest about the situation. No reason for Painter to lie when he is known for telling the truth to a brutal fault and it really didn’t do any bad to Kanon or put him in a bad light towards BYU. He was just being honest, and honesty stings sometimes. Suck it up.

No, Painter didn't build that roster thinking that Braden/Loyer will start. He was trying to get Nijel Pack to come, who would have started over Smith. And Loyer wasn't a lock to start. The thought at the time was that Brandon Newman would start, b/c that would be his fourth year in the program, and he was much better built than Loyer.

I've seen his highlights, he's not quite as explosive yet as Cam/Myles - both look like legit athletes who can both jump out of the gym. I think it's refreshing to say he can't anoint a role, but I think Greg is right that Paint knows right now that Kanon isn't there yet and that if he was, he'd have made it work.

Why is Carter being so irrationally hostile towards Painter's version of what happened? When have you ever known Matt Painter to be dishonest or vindictive towards recruits/other teams? Painter always takes the high road, is open and forthright with the media and runs his program the way a program should be run. I think you should give him the benefit of the doubt considering what he he said lines up precisely with how Catchings' family said it went down. Also, Painter was asked an interview question. It was not a prepared statement that was combed over by legal or run through a PR firm. It was an accurate description of what took place, off the cuff.
@aidanjennewein4415 ай бұрын
I don’t think it’s accurate to say Braden Fletch and Swanigan were annointed roles. Paint may have suspected they would beat out their competition for playing time and told them as much, but also there was way less competition at Swanigan, Fletcher, and Braden’s positions when they came in than Kanon had at his position. Braden and Fletch weren’t really competing with anyone good at their positions when they came in as freshmen, and Swanigan just had AJ Hammons to share minutes with when he got to Purdue. Hammons was heading out the door and Haas stank at that point. Kanon was competing with Cam Heide, Myles Colvin, and Caleb Furst. All very talented players.

Originally it was your opinion and it turned out to be correct. Even as a Purdue fan, I doubted the Kanon Catchings situation went down the way it did. I think it’s fair to doubt that things went down the way Paint said it did, but I tend to believe Painter. If Painter wouldn’t lie to get a recruit on campus I don’t think he would lie about how the situation went down. As for how Painter commented, I don’t think he had a premeditated response here. I think he was somewhat caught off guard by the pointed question and just answered it. I’m not sure he would’ve answered it so directly if he was more prepared for the question. Maybe he should’ve been prepared for it, but that’s just how I read his body language. Obviously all open to interpretation and I don’t think opposing fans/fanbases are wrong to doubt that Painter is accurately describing the entire story, but I personally do believe Painter. In any case, you two have done great covering the entire situation and have been completely fair and unbiased “media” members.

Good video. Greg, I accept your apology and think you handled this well. Carter, your sorry-not-sorry bounced. I think you are missing or exaggerating one point though Greg.....that is that the BYU visit and commitment came AFTER the Kanon camp purportedly asked back on the team, which Painter declined, and THEN Kanon actively visited other schools in the following days...but we all knew BYU was where he would end up because the OTE coach that got hired there was certainly at the root of some of this action. So it is illogical to think that BYU coaches or teammates feel like Kanon "didn't even want to come to BYU" -- all it says is that like 6 months ago, Kanon had uncertainties and those popped up again. He de-committed, reconsidered, but ultimately he chose BYU over OTHER optoins and is probably going to be just fine at BYU.

Coach will play whomever he sees fit. If you think you are NBA talent, if you think you are THAT good, why not compete and earn your minutes? You don't need guarantees from Painter to make sure you beat out Waddell and Furst. You just freaking beat out Waddell and Furst so that there's no doubt who should get the lion's share of the minutes. If you are so much better than Furst and Waddell, do you think Painter won't try to play you as many minutes as you can handle? That's literally what he did with Zach Edey and Braden Smith.

Lots of speculation here guys; lots of maybes, and lots of snarkiness (especially from you Carter). Yes, you're entitled to your own opinion, but you're SUPPOSED to be professional enough to separate out your MSU fanboy crap, if you want to be considered a legit media outlet. So, what you guys don't necessarily see, is the history inside the program here. 1) Kanon has been wishy-washy since his original recruitment. It was what, maybe a year ago, the fanbase went through like 3-4 days (and literally thousands of posts on GBI), when Kanon wavered on his commitment (changed his Twitter and/or Instagram page away from the Purdue theme he put up when he committed to Purdue), and then made comments in an interview that seemed to hint that he wasn't as "into" Painter and Purdue as he once was, and might re-open his recruitment? That was the second time (I believe), that he wavered around his commitment. 2) You can't forget the B.S. that Paint has been through with the likes of Ronnie Johnson, Nojel Eastern (and moreso: his mom), DGL (and his mom), The CJ Walker decommit ("not enough sauce"), and the headcase that was Kelsey Barlow, when he was let go from the team after the incident at the bar, (and while he was on "team probation"). You also can't forget Biggie, and his back and forth with MSU. There's been a lot of shit around Purdue recruits, and their handlers/other coaches being "in their ear" about what they "deserve" or could get, by going somewhere else. NIL has just exacerbated this problem (IMHO). I don't blame Paint for saying: "enough", and telling it like it is. And: why yes, I do see things through Black and Gold glasses..

No Coach Paint did not make a mistake there. As they say about edey, that Florida kid is literally just tall. Jacobsen was dominating him when they matched up. The mf literally had 0 pts.

He’ll he a one and done probably. Kevin Young just came from the NBA as a great offensive mind and with player development. So they are gonna get Kanon ready. Probably greater than 50% chance he’s a first round pick.

Speaking as an outsider; Painter seems like a guy who will die for you if you're in his camp and couldn't give two shits if you're not. He was probably caught off guard and didn't answer this the most PR positive way but this is close to how he feels. But his loss is BYU's gain and I'm grateful for it 🎉

Kanon just stated that he never wanted to return to Purdue. This whole situation is just so incredibly embarrassing for our Purdue program and reputation.

Two days ago you said Kentucky was your program . Pretty Jr high to say “our program” when you are not actually a fan of Purdue.

Good final note from Greg to wrap it up at the end, a whole lot of Paint praise for a lot of Paints mistakes. I would be pretty embarrassed losing my highest level recruit ever then speaking about him like that. Carters right though no matter what, Paint does no wrong

Im not buying the coaches story. Evetything considered with NIL, kanons old coach, his desire to be a one and done player. Purdues coach tells him no guarantees so he decommitts then turns around the next day and says he wants to return? What changed? Did he no longer want to be a one and done player. Was the NIL bigger at purdue? Was the purdue coach being truthful?

It’s just shows you how much Purdue is always hated. Matt Painter is awesome and Purdue will be a top 10 team this year and IU still sucks.
