The dedication to film accuracy is astonishing. I almost teared up when you started “All things Bright and Beautiful”. I’ve been watching this film for most of my life and I’m glad others have a similar love for it.

Even though the coach isn’t correct, it’s still a great recreation of the actual consist.

Hey there, glad you like my route and have had fun playing on it 😊 was great fun to create 😃 on my workshop items I also have a quick scenario called train theft auto, that's on the titfield route also which has an extra part of the line included from the film which will explain why I had the dairy farm added as an extra 😛

You're very welcome! It's a brilliant little line. All we need now is a model of Lion and a proper coach! ;-)

If anyone needs reference, two of the GWR locos are Lionshall Castle and Princess Margaret. There are also a few large prairies and many other nameless 4-6-0s.

I have two questions: 1. Why does a branch line have only one track? Wouldn't it be better to have two tracks?and 2. Can anyone tell me, does a steam engine really need a fireman? Like, could the driver manage alone? Or is it just easier having two people to operate the engine?
@KurtisHooey7 жыл бұрын
1. there may be no need for more than one engine at a time to be on that track, or the railroad cant afford to build more track. 2. yes it is best to have a fireman for safety reasons, they need at least one person to focus on the water level and fire level of the locomotive, while another drives, if the train runs out of water, you could risk a boiler explosion. i would say it MIGHT be possible for one person to run a small loco like that, but it wouldn't be easy or safe. imagine it like you having to text and drive at the same time, you would get distracted at some point and something could go wrong. hope these answers help!

Trainman K has pretty much answered your questions completely. Just a couple of things I would like to add though: 1. The number of tracks is dependent on traffic levels, a busy mainline might have four or even six tracks, whereas a small branch line with a single train would only need one with runaround loops at each end. Then, as now, companies would only pay for the minimum they could get away with (and often less if they can get away with it). 2. A fireman is absolutely vital with a steam loco, at least one hauling a train. The fireman spends a lot of time putting coal in the fire, especially when the engine is working hard. Add to that balancing the boiler pressure & water levels, means that there are often times when the fireman has his hands full (or at least isn't looking out the windows). There's no way that one person could safely drive and fire a loco in those circumstances. Just to many chances for something to go wrong, especially at night. Looking in the white-hot fire at night is going to destroy your night vision completely, doesn't do a lot of good to your day vision either. That said, when shunting or operating a small engine in something like a quarry (Quarry Hunslets in Welsh Quarries spring to mind) or an industrial site, a one man crew is possible, even normal, but then the engine is usually being driven at a slow pace, so the driver/fireman has all the time in the world to do what he needs to and is probably doing most of the firing while stationary. It's part of why railway companies were so keen on replacing steam with diesel or electric; you get to remove a crewman, plus diesels/electrics are slightly easier to operate (generally) than a steam loco or at least more forgiving.

I can't exactly recall the details, but if you tweak with the loco number as per the manual, you can set it up so no crest appears.
