after playing around with alternate tunings for years,( and somewhat struggling at it) you managed to put everything in perspective in one video.You are an excellent teacher, and funny as hell I might add, which kept my head in there. Thanx so much, and I'm heading to your website.

Matt, you are the fastest guitar tuner I have ever seen in my 40 years. Great lesson!
@jaybirdk74

Dan Leary asked Matt, "How do you tune so fast?" Ear training helps. Know your tunings and what they sound like, and eventually you'll cop that Matt Smith-approved ninja skill of tuning on the fly! Ear training, you can do with your favorite songs. Figure out the key of the song, and listen to other songs in the same key (E, A, and D are popular in guitar-based music). It's a "relate-theory-to-what-you-already-know" method, but it's how most "Ah hah!" moments come about. I speak from experience.

Matt, I remember you so well when I was just a young pup, at TIGERS bar in Clifton Park! Interstate was always a highlight! I'm a luthier now in Ballston Spa "Crestline Labs" and I owe a lot to you! I can remember writing down chord shapes on a bar napkin and then going home trying to figure exactly what the hell you were doing.(no tab, no internet in those days!) Thank you brother!Buddha Hurtt.

Super cool. YOu just changed my entire perspective on open tunings, can't wait to get after it. I do wish I could retune a guitar as quickly as you do by ear. Maybe I can do that in time. Although I know a lot of people who would have to give up their electronic tuners. I still tune by ear. Even after I use an electronic tuner. Nevertheless, thank you for your insight.

@NewMusicSpacequake Well.... that's because Matt has a extremely refined ear. Many guitarist, and this definitely includes me, are lazy about learning guitar. We look up tabs and watch youtube videos lol. Guitarists like Matt here learned to play to hard way... by listening. Heres my theory... or rather food for thought. Looks at how many amazing guitarist there were in the 60's 70's. Why? They didn't have KZbin with all its free lessons. They LISTENED to records for hours on end.
