Man you got it good, Terran cinematic was making a single marine.
@Obscurite12218 ай бұрын
Marines in SC2 are basically the equivalent of Penal battalions unless you're part of the royal guard or the Dominion elite. They're really not far off from a Space Marine, including the gene editing. Every one of them is stacked, their suits makes them like 8 feet tall, and they basically fire armor piercing rail spikes out of those guns. And keep in mind, The terrans of the Koprulu sector are two centuries behind the UED (The OG humans) technologically. All of the plot of one and two is in a podunk little edge of space on the milky way. An "invasion force" for the UED to take over the Overmind, which was an armada that took I think cooperation from all sides to beat, was just considered a scouting force by the UED. It wasn't even worth sending a second fleet for. The zerg, which were an existential threat to the Dominion and the Protoss, wasn't even a concern for them. Also, to answer your question, the protoss aren't actually all that technologically advanced. They cheated by integrating their psionics into their technology, which gave them a huge head start, but the Terrans are (as of SC2) already close to cracking their shielding AND warping technology, except entirely powered by science and not psychic ability.
@thorveim11743 ай бұрын
think the marines being mostly a penal battalion was true in starcraft one, but not really the case anymore by the time of starcraft 2 where they are instead more often volunteers or professional soldiers, ESPECIALLY when i comes to raynor's rebels. And no there is no genetic augmentation, its just what the average blizzard male human looks like :p Lastly, pretty sure the UED's tech advantage isnt as big anymore. It sure wasnt too crazy by the time of starcraft 1 (at best same stuff as the terrans just a bit better), and the terran sure learned a lot from both the Zerg and Protoss, which accelerates their own development, something the UED doesnt have a chance to do (as the expedition was exterminated to the last man). That, and quite a few vehicles from SC2 are specifically mentioned as having been created in terran space like the Odin and Thors, thus the UED wouldnt likely have such machines available. Meanwhile the UED may have slacked off in the military department since before the UED mission failed to come back, they didnt really have any reason to develop new weapons as they had no enemy whatsoever for a long time
@Obscurite12213 ай бұрын
@@thorveim1174 No. The Dominion still explicitly used penal battalions to field it's large numbers. The more elite Dominion battalions were professionals, but the grunts were still penal battalions. I don't think we see much of them though, as I believe they're used as garrison forces. On the note of genetic modification, you are correct. However, the Ghost program does deal with genetic experimentation. Finally, the UED expedition was not killed off to a man, nor do we have any reason to believe they've lost their technological edge. Not only do they have over 200 more years of development time, but the UED Expeditionary force explicitly used Koprulu sector technology to build their equipment. Almost all of it was either designed from scratch or modified from existing designs. This is a very rational thing to do, as they didn't want to arm potential rebels with significantly more advanced weaponry. Even still, the UED variants were almost categorically superior to their base versions where comparable. (I say they weren't killed off because IIRC it's stated that after the UED expeditionary force collapsed and both Admirals were KIA or MIA, (Admirals Dugalle and Stukov), the UED remnants escaped throughout the Koprulu sector and integrated into the frontier worlds to hide.)
@thorveim11743 ай бұрын
@@Obscurite1221 fully agree with the ghost program: was only talking about marines in that case :) for the UED expedition pretty sure its a "killed to the last man" case bar maybe a few that decided to hide int he koprulu sector itself and basically became terran, as you stated. Kerrigan made a point of murdering the entire UED fleet so they couldnt report on the koprulu sector, and thats the point that matters: Earth itself is basically unaware of anything about the Koprulu sector except that the fleet they sent never came back, and that includes keeping them ignorant of zerg biology and protoss tech, both things that allow the terran to advance MUCH faster in technology (not seen much in SC1 as its first contact with both, but in full display in SC2, and it may be what allows some technological marvels like the Viking or the Odin to develop. If Raynor and his rebels could advance as much as they did in the campaign in the lab of a single battlecruiser, imagine what the dominion managed to learn with its huge research facilities. If the UED had a tech advantage in the SC1 era, i think its long gone by the time of SC2, and wasnt that big to begin with or the expeditionary fleet wouldnt have worried that the forces at play here might attack earth sooner rather than later (in which case they could have instead just turned tail, warned earth, and came back with a real army to crush everything instead of acting like an invasion force if they were indeed meant to be scouts, which I am pretty sure they were not, they were indeed an invasion force meant to beat the sector into submission) As for the UED just copying what they saw the terrans using, it makes sense for ground vehicles, but not really for the battlecruisers they literally arrived with, and at the very least they did introduce the terrans to valkyries (that by the SC2 era are considered obsolete and were phased out in favor of vikings), showing that they were willing to introduce some UED designs, and that they werent advanced enough for the terran engineers to not be able to immediately replicate for their own use. Overal though, the exact capabilities of Earth itself are likely to reamin a mystery since hey never made a comeback and a future game that would advance the trory and where they would make a comeback is unlikely
@Obscurite12213 ай бұрын
@@thorveim1174 The UED Expeditionary force was in direct contact with Earth for the majority of their time in the Koprulu sector up until they made their move for the Overmind and lost their fleet. Further, the UED was stated to have spies in the sector for quite a while prior, which is how they knew the Overmind existed at all. The Expeditionary force further (IIRC as I'm a bit rusty) wasn't even a full military force. It was literally just a tiny little deployment that was ordered to obtain the Overmind for research purposes, and to control the zerg. It's fairly evident that the destruction of the UED fleet really didn't matter to the higher-ups, because they never sent anyone else. The whole series takes place over like 20-30 years, and the UED had to have learned of the Overmind, relayed the data, and sent a fleet BEFORE the Overmind was killed, and that was supposed to be at least a few years prior to the events of SC2. It's safe to assume that the UED response (If there was going to be one) would have happened if they cared. From the same logic, (The spies in the Koprulu sector), I'd argue that the UED could monitor and steal any technology that the Dominion or any other small states possessed. On top of that, (IIRC again) the UED basically effortlessly hacked Dominion systems multiple times throughout the campaign, which is a pretty clear sign of more advanced systems, or at least, an insider.

For how much further advandced the protoss are, the terran are able to replicate most of their tricks ableit often in a more limited capacity.And no specie out there is as fond of cming up with new weapons of mass destruction than the terran.

12:55 I assume you mean Natural Selection 2 It was/is a great idea and a pretty decent game but had some MASSIVE flaws that is about as dead as you can get now... The disconnect between the people doing the RTS and the FPS games was huge and the learning curve was kind of steep as you had to learn 2 games in 1 to get a hang of it. This led to the game becoming super imbalanced between newbies and people who knew the game. The biggest factor was however the game had no effective matchmaking system, so people playing the game for the first time had to play vs 1000 hour players. Combined with the fact that FPS games have some of the most elitist communities out there have made the fanbase super toxic to new players over time. It was not a fun experience to learn the game, so after a while, it died off super fast and new blood seldom came to join. I used to play it but I sadly joined too late so most games were a stomp on either side and it was rare to get an even match. I miss the game sometimes, and dream of what it could have been. But it's a class book example of a good game having bad people behind it who never bother to fix the massive issues the game had on launch.

1:50 Starcraft was supposed to be a Warhammer game but did not get the licence for it.( they dropped the ball on that one ) That is why Terrans are so close to The Imperium/ Space Marines, The Zerg resembles The Tyranids and the Protos was going to be the Eldar. Obviously, a few things changed but the core theme is very much still there. Assuming the story was going to the same or similar for the first game. This also would have meant that "UED exploratory fleet" would have been from Holy Terra or possibly from Mars. For anyone who knows the lore from both games, that would have had some pretty big implications.
@CommissarChaotic8 ай бұрын
That is largely unfounded. The closest source of evidence to that rumour was an article about Warcraft and Warhammer (Classic/Fantasy) both of which came first. The deal wasn't made because some Blizzard employees didn't want to work with creative restrictions. Starcraft is largely based on similar franchises 40k also was inspired by, but 40k is heavily inspired by... Warhammer. I thought it was the other way around but this seems to be the actual case. 40k is essentially Fantasy in space. Starcraft is similarly Warcraft in space, loosely other than similar tropes. The largest inspiration for Starcraft is Aliens and Starship Troopers. If you have played Starcraft 1 as an Aliens franchise fan you could see it. Even Brood War taps a bit into that Federation schtick with the UED. Terrans are based on... anyhumaninscifi. The closest similarity that isn't superficial is Mengsk in later games especially as a coop commander in that mode where it mirrors the Imperium a bit, they literally have "Earthsplitters" that look like Earthshakers. Protoss are based on the Yautja/Predators, being similar tribal yet technologically advanced races, and the closest analog to Warp or Psyker magick isn't psionics but the Void energy thing which the Nerazim faction and the Xel-Nagas like Amon and Narud use. The Zerg aren't Nids well I guess they are... Arachnids that is. Tyranids are based on those as well. They never shared similarities apart from their inspirations until later on the line. Early Tyranids looked like Xenomorphs with that head which they still have til now. The early Terran marine firing sound which is iconic is pretty similar to the pulse rifle.

Fun fact, Starcraft WAS supposed to be a Warhammer 40K RTS game. But Games Workshop somehow screwed up the deal, and the project was dropped. So Blizzard was left with the skeleton of a Three faction RTS game that they had built, or at least, prototyped or had in the works. So they developed it into their own original IP. The Terrans were the Imperium of Man, the Protoss were the Eldar, and the Zerg, surprise surprise, were the Tyranids.

@atreyos9449 okay, so I did dive into it a bit. You're right, there wasn't a set deal, but Blizzard did make a proposal with a design spec of the RTS game they wanted to make using Warhammer's factions. But Games Workshop declined the deal. So this made Blizzard make it all their own, taking other inspirations like Starship Troopers and Enders game, since they no longer had to play in GW's lore.
