I think there was an element of underestimating Michigan all year. There are a couple of reasons for that, but I think it’s predominantly due to a lingering mindset of looking at Michigan as though they were the Michigan teams of four or five or six years ago. That just wasn’t the case. I remember watching Michigan play a game in about week four or five. And I remember saying that this Michigan team was way better than last year‘s team. And I even remember saying that they had a shot at the national championship. I think you made an interesting statement in a recent video when you said that Michigan doesn’t try to score 40 points, they just get seven or 10 points ahead of you then run the clock out. And that’s exactly right. It causes Michigan to win games in a dominating fashion but for the scoreboard to be sort of possibly close for most of the game. Michigan actually often breaks these games open at the end when the opponents have to take high risks in order to try to get back in it. And that’s what happened against Washington. Michigan was dominating that game. It didn’t look like Washington was hopelessly behind, especially when they were only seven points down. But their situation was worse than it seemed. They had to make big plays in order to score a touchdown. Then they had to stop Michigan from scoring, which was unrealistic, given their run defense. So they have to do the big place success thing all over again. Who knows how many times they have to do that to actually win the game. By the fourth quarter, Penny was starting to walk around as though he just been in a car accident. I never want to see a guy hurt, but you could see that the physical toll was reducing his effectiveness. And all. of this was by far the most probable way the game would go. If you played this game 10 times, eight of them would play out like this with Washington, limping around by the end, sort of plausibly in range of somehow coming back, but with no great prospects of pulling it off.

Washington showed better than Michigan did against Georgia. Not only did the Georgia front seven completely stop Michigan's run game, leaving them reliant on a pass attack headed by a very ordinary game manager QB, but Georgia's offense scored over the top a couple of times early in that game, which completely disrupted the Michigan defense. As a Blue fan, it was really tough to watch.

Your impressions were correct. Michigan's dominance score for the game was 72.3404% and their average in-game dominance score was 72.3245%. The way these scores are calculated, they should NOT be this close to one another. The idea being that the game dominance score should increase as a team pulls away from their opponent. We don't see that here. Michigan dominated basically from start to finish.
@Johnadams2076010 ай бұрын
what are these dominance scores? sounds interesting. how do they do that?
@vandebunted10 ай бұрын
@@Johnadams20760 It's a formula I came up with that takes into account how wide the margin of victory is compared to how many total points were scored in the game. The idea being that it measures how much one team was able to impose their will on the other team. It started with the formula (Points Scored - Points Allowed) / (Points Scored + Points Allowed). But then I had to adjust the formula in order to get rid of negative scores and scale everything from 0 to 100. A score of 0 means you GOT shut out. A score of 100 means you shut out your opponent. A score of 50 means the game ended in a tie (which doesn't happen in NCAA). The average dominance score is these same principles in conjunction with a little Calculus (I'm a HS math teacher) to determine the average value of a team's dominance as the game progresses from start to finish. The game dominance score is just calculated by entering the final points from each team into a formula. The average in-game dominance is more complicated. That's why I found it so strange that for this game those two scores ended up being so very close to one another. For a metric I made up last fall, it was pretty good at correlating with the top teams throughout the year. That being said, I only entered data for teams that were in the top 10, so I don't have that data for every team.

@@Johnadams20760 I did the math it’s percentage of points scored
@vandebunted10 ай бұрын
@@cameronbrennemanoutdoors Huh. That is not how I came up with the formula. But after doing a quick simplification of my formula, it is equivalent to % of points scored. That will make my spreadsheets easier to fill in for next season. The average in-game dominance, which I believe to be a more meaningful and accurate metric, will still be different...usually. Mathematically speaking, the following is true for all values of Pa (points allowed) and Ps (points scored). my formula - > 50(1 + (Ps - Pa)/(Ps + Pa)) = 100(Ps/(Ps + Pa)) < - % of points scored
@ericholmes714310 ай бұрын
You are correct - it was a matchup nightmare for Washington. Michigan always wears teams down and usually has big runs in the second half. When they started gauging them in the first half I knew it was over. Refs did play a little bit into it. Both teams were holding and they were letting them play. That favors Michigan more. Michigan was 1-10 on third downs....and didn't really play that well.

Honestly, what this game exposed me to is the fact that the vast majority of casuals and media people just don't watch the games. I spent a whole week listening to people talk about Michigan like it was 1977 and we've never seen a forward pass. I knew we'd beat Washington because we beat OSU in 2021 and 2022 and those were the same teams with much better linemen and linebackers. We practice against a pro-style shotgun spread every day, to be ready for OSU. And don't even get me started on people telling me "Penix can throw to guys even when they're covered, just watch the Texas game" - man, I *did* watch the Texas game and what I saw was DBs getting burned enough that even though they were next to the receiver they never had time to turn back and LOOK at the ball. That's not throwing guys open, and it's not good coverage either. I knew Michigan would be facing the ball on those passes and look? That's what happened, and Penix wasn't throwing ANYONE open when the DB had eyes on the ball.

Not trying to kick the bees nest, because I agree that Michigan was the team to beat this season (this coming from a NOT UM fan). What the heck happened last year vs TCU? I watched that game and, yes, it was a thriller for general football watching, but with how the championship went it just didn’t make sense they didn’t beat the brakes off TCU. But good on UM for pulling it together this season, it made up for the last two years in spades.
@ninaillingworth394710 ай бұрын
The short answer is "we didn't respect TCU's top tier athletes and just assumed they were all scrubs, turned the ball over, and choked." The long answer is that TCU's defense, a 3-3-5, worked by flowing into a seven man run fit, and Michigan needed to run trap and counter, but instead we spammed duo for most of the first half - which is literally *the* run play, TCU's defense wants to play against. We needed to get them moving one way, and then go the other, but we refused because "they're giving us free doubles on their three linemen" - which is what TCU wanted us to think. Before the game, Vance Bedford was on KZbin saying "duo won't work, but we can kill them with counters and movement" - wish Michigan's staff had watched that video. The moral of the story is probably "respect your opponents." If you watched us running against Bama, we recognized their ability to flow to the ball, and worked to manipulate their linebackers into the wrong gaps. Against TCU we just said "lol, manball." Once we started respecting them, we outscored them. But you spot a team 3 scores in the playoff, and you're probably going to lose. Barely, but lose nonetheless.

As the selection date for the CFP approached, all your heard from fans of the teams looking at missing the playoff was that "Michigan hadn't played anybody". There was some truth to that claim, but the fact that they played a fairly weak schedule in no way meant they did not handily beat those teams as you might expect a potential national champion to do. Most of those games saw the starters benched midway through the third quarter, so you never saw a bunch of 63-3 final scores, and MIchigan's reliance on the run game moved the game clock and limited their offensive possesssions. J.J. McCarthy's season stats were unimpressive due to the success of the run game combined with his being pulled from games early. Overall, the weak schedule helped Michigan keep their first stringers healthy and ready to play for the nattty. Blue could have turned into FSU if McCarthy ripped up a knee trying to win an earlier game. Playing weaker teams and not clobbering them by 50-60 points with a fancy passig attack hid Michigan's excellence from casual fans who only saw the names of the opponents and the final scores of the games.

Wait so your takeaway from the Big10 vs pac-12 last night was the Big10 better be ready!?!? The big ten was laughing at your oline and d line last night. Your lucky it wasn’t 45-13. I’m being dead honest right now too.

Washington/Oregon and USC need to be ready for late October early November cold snaps. Big House, Camp Randall, Minnesota etc are no joke late fall. Can’t wait to see how USC handles the cold and snow.

Wow, those three big time pac 12 teams coming into the B1G are all Losing their QBs. And it took Oregon and Washington to have a 6th year senior to be good. They will struggle with Iowa, Rutgers, and Illinois. I really Hope you Aren’t confusing michigan state with university of Michigan. State might beat you guys next year too.

Georgia fans are delusional. They still feel the Bama loss was a fluke. Bama beat you picks clearly. Your 1-6 against Bama. You all didn't deserve to be in the mix. Bama deserved to be there. So did Texas and Washington. Get over it. Your chance to 3 peat is over, done, capute.

We lost to bama and we didn't get the 3 peat ok cool but we still deserved a shot to be still in college football playoffs, you cant say we werent a top 4 team in college football 🤔 this same thing happened when we won in 2021 and once we played bama again in the natty we won🤷🏾♂️

@@JayyVonn.That's why it's crucial to win every game, especially the conference championship. It gives those games more meaning. I think it's sad there will be 12 teams in the playoffs and make it too easy to play for a natty. I think in order to be the best you gotta go 15-0. Period. Beat everyone in front of you. No excuses

Penix was off all night. But I feel like Michigan could have ran it nonstop with the gaps they were opening. 3 downs to get 10 yards the law of averages was in their favor. With Penix being off and Michigan having great success on the ground it was a recipe for a crappy game

How many holds were called in the Rose Bowl? None. Refs don't call holds unless it's really obvious, and the one they called against UW was pretty obvious (and they called defensive holding on M as well). That don't mean they aren't happening. You telling me the UW Oline never held M's DL that was crashing on them every play? Refs simply won't call most holds so no use crying about it.

Michigan had 4 paths to win. Run the ball, jj pops offs, Michigan bleeds the clock and kicks multiple fgs. Or the defense shutdowns Washington and gets points if turnovers. Washington only had Michael has their only chance.

4th quarter 7 minutes left and it was a 13 - 20 game. Washington had missed pass connections all night plus the refs missed tons of calls. It’s bad when Penix had to call out holds mid game while he was passing😂 Michigan just didn’t make those same mistakes and was able to get their running game going while Washington had mental errors that’s why they won.

Because Alabama is tried and true. Even on a weird start to a season like not knowing who your starting qb is at week 3 and letting south Florida scare ya, you know that team is still a threat. It’s a type of respect they’ve earned over years of success and championships. Washington however does not have that. They don’t have a history of winning like they did this season and nobody really knew what to expect once they stepped out of conference.
