Baofeng Radio PTT-ID Feature Demo

Demonstration of the PTT-ID feature in Baofeng radios. I go through using BOT (beginning of transmission, or prefix) IDs, EOT (end of transmission, or appended) IDs, and the combination setting of BOTH. Also, this clarifies how the DTMF-ST setting affects the operation of the keypad dial tones and PTT-ID.

thank you, this will be a great tool for my repeater explorations and building a repeater station and none of the baofang manuals, witch are suprisingly well written explain much about this feature aside from what it can be used for and how it originated for radio use

For commercial communications it would be ok. But for an amateur radio station, it does not transmit the call sign.

Just what I needed! So now once I release PTT the Audio in the RX Direction can be tripped using a relay and I can have automatic single-direction audio :)

I actually accidentally turned this in and when I heard it I thought it was calling 911 or something I was like "oh gosh oh fuck what did I just transmit" cause it sounds exactly like a phone keypad tone

It IS a phone keypad tone, that's where DTMF originated. Its copyrighted term is "touch tone" by AT&T (1963)

These don't have much use in the amateur radio world. However, in the public safety world, they serve to trace the radio back to a specific user. The radio is assigned a unique ID which is programmed into the radio and then recorded in a lookup table. When the user assigned to that radio keys up the mic, the ID is transmitted as demonstrated in this video. This could show a radio dispatcher who uses computer aided dispatch (CAD) the identity of the person who keyed up. This has several uses such as when the person calling on the radio forgets to identify themselves, the person is in distress and does not have time to identify themselves, or the dispatcher was busy handling radio traffic on another channel and missed the last person calling on the radio. The dispatcher would just have to look at the identity on their screen and then can call back to the user. Another use would be to save the radio traffic in an audio recording and being able to go back through the historical data and identify who transmitted which message. This could be used if some kind of incident occurs and the timeline of who said what when needs to be pieced together. Most public safety organizations in the US do not use DTMF encoded IDs. The majority use MDC1200 which sounds like a crash of static sound at the end (or beginning) of the transmission.

perhaps someone familiar with baofeng radios can help me. police radios make a static sound, like a brief hiss, at the end of a transmission, rather than those painful Roger beeps. can something like that be set up for a baofeng?
@marcot3333
@marcot3333 8 жыл бұрын
+DOTLeo62 no. What you're hearing is likely MDC-1200 signaling and it requires a real radio. Baofengs are nice for what they are, and worlds better than those junk FRS "22 mile" radios but aren't anything close to a professional communication device.

Dumb queston but WHY is the CTCSS changing each time you use the BaoFeng? Why does it show up differently on the Pro106 scanner?
@mattbjrs
@mattbjrs 4 жыл бұрын
I think it's due to random interference in the signal that happens to be around the lower frequencies that CTCSS uses. Since CTCSS uses a continuous tone signal as its squelch code, it's susceptible to interference. In this case, a random signal that produces waves close to 67 Hz for a short period of time will look like a 67 Hz CTCSS squelch tone even though I don't have a squelch tone programmed into the Baofeng. Since the Pro106 scanner supports digital radio, if you don't put it in CTCSS squelch search, it will take a second to begin receiving an analog signal because it has to determine that it's not digital first. Setting it to CTCSS squelch search mode is a way to tell the radio that the signal is definitely analog and eliminates the delay. Newer digital scanners allow you to specify whether the channel is analog or digital without this hack. Since it's on search mode and I'm not using CTCSS, it will display random frequencies based on the interference.

@@mattbjrs Thanks. I have the same scanner 😛 I figured the BaoFeng would have the same CTCSS all the time but ok. I wish they picked up Phase II. Oh I hope you have the Win500 folder saved because the site is OUT.

This is a feature mostly used in commercial radio systems to record which radio is transmitting a message for auditing purposes later such as an after action review in public safety. It could have some uses in amateur radio if you decode the digits and have the radio receivers process them in some way such as a repeater recognizing a certain user is transmitting on it or using the beginning s code to automatically set up repeater linking. As others have pointed out though, in the amateur radio service, this does not satisfy the identity requirements and you still have to transmit your call sign per FCC regulations, so the ANI is probably not that useful to hams.

@@mattbjrs I got into Baofengs because of Airsoft (like Paintball), and have had a blast learning about this stuff. I especially like the audible sound options that can simply mean the person is done talking, though shorter codes would be good, and helpful hearing a tone associated with a voice. I also know there's a trick to making one or two Baofengs into repeaters. I also do production professionally, including drone work. I'm interested to see if the repeater/identifier thing could help isolate particular people so they can be given their own audio recorder input on my Zoom 6 track recorder. Can repeaters be used to extend range? Going off of old memory, and not that experienced, I remember that being something our organization discussed for big games.
