Why the Batman: The Animated Series episode "Heart of Ice" remains a beautiful tragedy that has defined the character of Mr. Freeze and B:TAS as a whole for 25 years.

This is one of my all time favorite episode, second to the episode Almost Got Him, when five of Batman's Enemies, The Joker (who is voiced by the Legendary and Esteemed Actor Mark Hamill (and as the late, great, Legendary Actor Phil Hartman (R.I.P) who did the voice acting of Troy McClure in the Animated Series "The Simpsons" (Off-Topic, I'm still outraged that Pokemon didn't make the kids choice for favorite animated series again, You might Know Him (Mark Hamill) in other movies as Luke Skywalker In the star Wars Movies, and The Killer Doll Chucky In The 2019 Remake of Child's Play), The Penguin (In My Opinion Danny Devito was Amazing Portraying The Penguin In The 1992 Warner Bros Movie Batman Returns), Two-Face (also In My Opinion I think that Tommy Lee Jones Was Amazing Portraying Two-Face In The 1995 Warner Bros Movie Batman Forever), Poison Ivy, and Killer Croc, was playing a game of cards and talking about their Foe Batman, Second to another episode The Cat and The Caw, When Batman encounters a new Cat Burglar calling herself Catwoman (all right I have a tie between two women, One is Michelle Pfeiffer (who played the Catwoman in the 1992 Warner Brothers Movie Batman Returns), and the second one is Anne Hathaway (she was Catwoman in the 2012 Warner Brothers Movie The Dark Knight Rises), But When He's (Batman) Bruce Wayne, He meets a woman named Selina Kyle, This episode was a two parter, Third To Another Episode Perchance To Dream, etc. etc.

@kassandra odessa apparently Matt Reeves wants to adapt Heart of Ice for the sequel to The Batman. He also suggests Robin too and Robert apparently wants a 10 year old Dick so they can go full comic. The sequel sounds interesting and I'm excited for a less chromed out and muscle bound Freeze. My picks are Bryan Cranston, Mark Strong and Giancarlo Esposito, I know that fits the right age for a brilliant scientist accomplished in the world of cryogenics being turned into this ice cold villian. Plus they've got the looks and acting chops to fit the Battisonverse. I'm so excited to see a more Arkham or Animated Series inspire suit. I think they nailed that realistic but also cinematic suit in Knight.

One tidbit I really loved in this episode was this moment at the very, very end when Batman is looking at Victor in his cell lamenting his failed attempt to avenge his wife. As Batman starts to walk away, there's a very brief moment where he stops and looks over his shoulder at him (which you can actually see right here 9:48). That was probably the first time we see Batman truly feel the pain of one of his enemies. And it makes complete sense that this moment happens with Mr. Freeze because who else knows the pain of losing a loved one more than Batman

Dude, it's extremely strange to compare the Mad Hatter and Mr. Freeze. These are literally two opposites - two kinds of love, one sincere, when Frieze, being a kind person, goes to evil deeds for the sake of the recovery of a loved one. There is literally a tragedy behind Mr. Freeze - the love of his life is at death's door, and his body literally cannot survive without a special suit. Thatch is literally an incel who invented love in his head himself, he was offended that Alice chose another person and literally all this is motivation to enslave the mind of the girl he loves and force her to love herself, and then say that he would rather kill her than she got to someone.

Watching this show as a kid, Mr. Freeze was the only villain to actually unsettle me. With that distorted voice and glowing red eyes, he just had this ominous, deadly-serious *presence* to him. He seemed desolate, cold (well duh), unnatural, and inhuman. While I was too young to pick up on the nuances of the character, I could tell he was sad and broken, which made him all the more threatening, as he was this uncanny combination of humanity and inhumanity. One of the greatest things about this ep is how it managed to incorporate sillier aspects like Bruce catching a cold and Mr Freeze being defeated by a jar of chicken soup and yet still maintained its serious tone all the way through. Goes to show that if the story is written and executed well, people will overlook those minor aspects which would otherwise be brought up more often in inferior stories only to be turned into a point of flaw

Interestingly, in Batman issue #308, There'll be a Cold Time in the Old Time Tonight (1979) presents a very sympathetic take on Mr. Freeze. In it, Freeze concocts a scheme were he is offered payment by old millionaires who want to achieve his "immortality" via a cryogenic encasement. But the process backfires and renders them zombies. His motivation is that he's fallen for a blonde named Hildy, who possing as his secretary in the scheme, desires his immortality and is going to great lengths to recreate the accidents that turned him into a living snowman. That and we get insight in how he feels aloneness; that he is trapped in a body of ice with no one he can relate to and so he seeks companionship. Meanwhile, Hildy has plans of her own once Freeze completes his research and obtains her immortality... This pre-Crisis Mr. Freeze in the comics comes close to the Batman: TAS version and may have inspired Bruce Timm and Paul Dini.

When you lose someone you love more than life itself and who brings out the best in you, many people (including myself) emotionally shut down just so the pain will stop. But you have to feel something. What usually bubbles up is anger. Anger at them for leaving you all alone. Anger at the doctors for not doing all they could. Anger at yourself for not being able to stop it… Deep, profound grief like what Victor endures is probably the most painful thing anyone can go through. You’ll do anything to get it to stop.

Okay I was born in 91, and I remember watching this series and it was my favorite however cause of my autism spectrum I had no idea how to work or understand what a schedule WAS. But getting off topic of all the Batman villains, Mr. Victor Freeze WAS AND IS MY FAVORITE. Yes I did like the Joker mostly cause of the great voice actor he has, But it is mostly because he is in the quote in the 2000’s version of ‘The Batman’ Batman asked a riddle: Tell me something Robin when is a Villain NOT THE VILLAIN? Someone commented that the answer is: He is the victim I always saw Victor as that. An innocent, kind hearted man. Who had so much love and some much to give. And all he wanted was to save and help victims like Nora. Until a selfish man, who only cared about profit and greed took that all away. And going down the road, from Batman, to Batman Beyond, you keep yelling at the screen shaking it. “Stop torturing this poor man!?” What gets me all the time is his last words in the first episode we saw this poor man, is this: “I failed you....I wish there was another way for me to say it....but I can not....I can BEG your forgiveness....and pray....that someday....someplace their is a warm hand waits for mine....” RIP Victor Freeze Voice actor, *up in the cloud of heaven a thousand warm hands reach for him* “....I heard you. Here Victor you don’t have to be in the cold anymore....you’ve been buried in the snow long enough....”

I loved George Sanders' performance of Mr. Freeze, his background story would've been nice to add on the 60's show

Yeah, Kevin Conroy will always be the greatest Batman, but I'll be honest, I don't like his portrayal back in these early days of BTAS as much as I like how he plays the character now. I think this new take started in The World's Finest, maybe? Or when the animation style for BTAS changed to more closely match STAS, Justice League, etc. Back in BTAS, he always sounded super raspy, and it actually sounded painful to talk that way, almost like Bale's Batman, but way less extreme. I prefer that now he just mostly uses his normal voice, but with some anger thrown in there, some toughness and bass. Come to think of it, it's kinda like Chris Sabat's improvement playing Piccolo between DBZ and DBZ Kai. His take on the character sounds MUCH better in Kai.

so good they gave mr. freeze a followup standalone film, and schumacker thought he could do him in batman & robin (too bad Schwarzenegger turned down Bane to do Freeze and no one could tell him no).

Still one of my favorite episodes and villain\hero type done with tradgic origin and the way Mr Freeze should be done in live action movie. 👍🏻I have and will always love the voice of Freeze by Ansara as beautiful and one of the best and a simple but best suit done.

In my own opinion, I think this episode of Batman was the best episode of anything I'd ever seen in any medium and EVERY time I watch it, it sinks my heart like a beautiful tragedy should.

I can't believe they tried to retcon this in the comics by making Freeze a schizophrenic who only imagined that Nora, a random test subject, was his wife. It destroys the tragic complexity of the character and makes him just another psycho. Thank God they changed the backstory back to the Heart of Ice version.

Freeze because of this series is my favorite villain not just because of his tragic past but his motivation is that of a man losing everything the only reason he takes up crime is to save his dying wife the only reason he ever does anything is because of Nora and it’s because of this he’s unique in Batman’s rogues gallery as unlike the other villains he isn’t motivated by greed or power or because he’s insane but he’s motivated by his wife he’s not doing any of this for himself he’s doing it all for his wife and he’s afraid that one day when he finally cures his wife he’s afraid that she will see her husband as died and all that stands in front of her is a cold heartless monster which the Arkham games (with him) did well and though the story for Knight was bad (like really bad) they end freeze’s chapter well with Nora not wanting to stay frozen if it means Victor hurts himself and instead would rather die with him being happy and getting to spend her last moments with the man she loves.

Batman Animated is simply fantastic and has so many stand out episodes. Given what has happened to the industry since ( politics and woke messages not entertainment) I do not think we will ever see it's like again.
