When I work I prefer a matte screen. It enables me to focus better without all the reflections, and feels easier on my eyes when I code. For entertainment, I totally get why people prefer glossy screens, because the images do look way more vibrant, and seem to pop out more, not as dull as the matte. It's a give and take

@J Hamm you can get reflections indoors too. I found that with a small smartphone screen it's easy to hold it in a way it won't reflect but with big laptop screens any angle will reflect. You can't avoid it.

I would have to say… i do like the Glossy screens more then the matte ones. They have better colors and they make the display look a whole lot clearer, because the antiglare coating does blur out the pixels a bit. Even for outdoor use, i think they are a bit better. But its personal preference of course!

I alternate my options between glossy and matte depending on how often i use laptop on outdoors or indoors. If i use laptop a lot in outdoor, ie due to university or taking to a cafe, i buy cheap matte screen protector and apply it, and when theres period i spend most of my time at home i just remove matte screen protector and use glossy screen again This is the benefit of owning a glossy laptop. It allows you to have the option to choose between matte and glossy. I have even reapplied my old matte screen protector over and over again so the resusability is great, depending on the type you buy the matte screen protector of course.

This is actually the flexibility that I am hoping to get for my next laptop. I have ordered a Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Pro which has a very nice 2880x1800 glossy screen. I actually found gloss was better when I had a big window behind me and the sunlight poured in on my back. I found the Matt screen diffused the light across its surface and made it very hard to see. The gloss while it had massive reflections I was able to just not look at them since your eyes have to actually move to focus them instead of the screen. All that said, if the Matt screen I had was only around 300nits. If it was 400+ it might have done a much better job of countering the bright light.

@@Ruptured_AU Not all of them. And TVs. There are tvs with sub 300-250 nits of brightness that are still glossy or actual semi gloss. There aren't any TVs on the market now I can think of that have the ugly disgusting and cheap plastic "matte" coating monitors have on them. Because if someone put that on a TV they'd be laughed at because it destroys image quality and clarity. What is even more sad if you look at say, Rtings, and compare the glare handling of a glossy screen with a high quality proper anti reflective coating (like the new lg oled tvs) and compare it to pretty much any pc monitor it's better. So the nasty plastic "matte" layer isn't even necessary to fight glare.

I've been using the Ultra HD glossy screen for 5.5 years now and typically used it for work every day for 12-16 hrs and never had any eye related issues, especially with such a high screen time. Flip side is the outdoor usage issue, I totally agree, it is annoying for sure with a reflective / brighter backgrounds as light reflection is evitable, which in my opinion one can re-adjust their seating positions to a lesser lit / dark backgrounds. Let's admit, we don't work most of our time in brighter backgrounds, right ? So, If you use 90percent of the time with shady background then glossy screen is perfect. So why am I recommending a glossy display with high resolution? Well I got a new laptop for work which has a lesser display resolution of 1920x1080 and a Matt finish... I find it so hard to focus even indoors as it's causing dry eyes since it doesn't have an anti glare screen. After 30 mins my eyes start to retain the white background from the emails and chat windows, which gives me a headache and have to literally move away from the system frequently. I never had this issue with my ultra HD display (resolution 3840x 2160 but I use it with 1920x1040 as my apps don't work with higher resolution) which has the glossy, Anti glare and most importantly gives a soft and smooth backgrounds in chat or email windows.... very good for prolonged usage/screentime.. Please invest in a good screen to avoid issues for your sensitive eyes and other side effects 🙏 Hope it helps..

I'm gonna have to disagree with your conclusion. The ultimate gold standard is a glossy display. If you have phones and tablets that can be used outside with glossy displays, so can laptops. Infact, when you adjust your laptop you're done. You're not going to be constantly adjusting it all the time. And how often do people use their laptops outside? Usually its not very long. Laptops are generally used indoors. And you forget a few other points regarding glossy. Glossy will appear sharper than matte since matte diffuses light. Glossy will also have more accurate colors since even if a matte has 100% srgb, it will still not actually be color accurate since matte coating will distort colors. And you forget to mention the biggest factor. Availability. Matte infact seems more suited to much more portable lightweight laptops that have a higher chance of being used outside. However gaming laptops and the like still use matte displays even though glossy would be objectively better for them since they're going to be used indoors. Even gaming monitors almost never have glossy displays. And then there's OLED displays. OLED technically is a bit less sharp than an equivalent resolution IPS since its subpixel arrangement is different. But it has very high brightness, very good contrast, excellent colors, very good response times, etc. It'd be perfect for gaming laptops and multimedia laptops. Yet its only now being offered on some laptops. Of course the ideal display would be mini led's which have the pro's of oleds and the pro's of IPS glossy displays.

Laptops in general do not have glossy options. And gaming laptops especially don't have that. The only ones that have that, are the vivobook pro, gigabyte aero 16, gigabyte aero 5, that MSI 240hz oled laptop, some razer blades, etc. You can see aside from the vivbook and aero laptops, they are all very expensive options.

Ideally with good battery life (a tradeoff with gaming, it seems), a numeric keypad, and touchscreen. A 16:10 aspect ratio would be nice. Also, without PWM - my daughter seems to be very sensitive to that. I'll look for 100% sRGB, 400+ nits, and glossy based on your videos. Thanks!

Unfortunately glossy based gaming laptops are quite rare. I think your best bet would be a gigabyte aero 16 with a 4k OLED display and a 100w rtx 3070ti and i7 12700h. Its actually reasonably priced for what it packs coming in at around $1300ish. Battery life would likely hover around the 6hr mark since intel is not very efficient. Either that or the gigabyte aero 5 with the same display but higher TDP rtx 3070ti. There is no touch option on these laptops. I would recommend no touch screen laptop since its just a useless feature. You could go with the vivobook pro 16 that has a 5800h and a 144hz OLED display. Unfortunately it only has a 50w rtx 3050 which has about the same performance as a rx590. But its an okay-ish option for 1080p. Otherwise you're gonna have to settle for a crap matte display. Even the 100% srgb ones don't look that great. Matte literally distorts colors so that 100% srgb isn't very accurate. I would say your best bet is the asus rog strix amd advantage. Has a 100% srgb QHD 165hz display and a rx6800m with a 5900hx. This QHD model gets about 8 hours of battery. The FHD one gets about 10hr of battery life. If you can settle for replaceable batteries, I'd highly suggest the $550 gigabyte g5 with a 85w rtx 3050ti (Basically a 4gb version of the desktop rtx 3050 in performance) or the $800 gigabyte g5 with a 130w rtx 3060 (basically a 6gb version of the desktop 3060 in performance). The 3060 will shred 1080p gaming. The battery life on 1 battery is about 4 hours, but it has swappable batteries, so just buy 2 batteries and you can easily swap out batteries.

@@piyushsingh7203 I've literally been using an oled laptop for the past few days and boy oh boy is it a nice step up from my old laptop's matte display. Sadly gaming laptops really don't give us oled options. Would be awesome to play games on it. Not everyone plays RDR2 at 120fps. High refresh rate is just needed for esports titles and even then if you're actually playing competitively. Making a display just for 1 specific type of game is dumb. You leave out racing game (which are absolutely fine with 60fps), AAA titles, combat games (like dark souls, etc.), etc. An OLED 60hz panel would be way better suited to gaming and media consumption than matte panels.

Thanks for the informative video, it mirrors a lot of my feelings (no pun intended!) instead of just being 'glossy good, matte bad'. There has been a big push towards glossy computer screens, the TV space is already almost entirely gloss. People seem to focus way too much on high brightness content consumption in an ideal space (or just blasting the brightness so high the space no longer matters) Well I don't know how most people can deal with that, but after about an hour of that kind of brightness I get a searing headache, especially in the dark! Most seem to ignore how annoying it is to deal with such a screen in a working environment, or even just browsing the internet. At low brightness the reflections of a glossy screen get almost unbearably distracting, and can easily completely wash out text you're trying to read if the lighting isn't perfectly placed. I'd hate to see the day where there just aren't any matte options left like happened with high end TVs.

Well I have a completely different view. First I don't recall using laptop in the sun or outside. Second I am too sensitive to brightness. 10 minutes on a bright screen gives me headache. The Acer laptop I had earlier, the lowest brightness settings was too bright for me in a regular lighted room. So I tweaked in the driver level to dim the screen, it suffered from color accuracy but was the only way to save from having a headache. Now I have Surface Pro 4, the lowest brightness is still bright for me. I am using software tool to dim. Same true on the Acer monitor in my office. I have never used a matt screen for a long term. I borrowed friend's matt screen laptop for testing, I couldn't stand washed out look and for some reason it gives me headache very soon. When I shop for a laptop, the first thing I check is how dim it can go. I have found Sony laptops can go very dim. And 3 colleagues in my team out of 9 use software tool to dim their screen as lowest is still too bright.

I'm willing to buy *HP15-ec10051AX*. It's got super specs and a 144hz refresh rate but comes with a matte screen. But after 7 years of using a budget Lenovo laptop with glossy screen and 720p display, I found matte screen a little dull looking and the brightness didn't seem very satisfactory to me. I do most of my reading online (e-books) and on spare time love to enjoy series or movies. Was it the showroom lights which made the brightness look a little dull? at the same price point no other laptop with glossy screen is providing 144hz refresh rate. Really confused about what to do. However, this I'm sure of, that reading in matte screen saves the strain to the eyes. But will I be able to enjoy movies equally well with a matte screen? Honestly, this is the only uncertainty that's holding me back. I use laptop mostly inside the house so reflection isn't really an issue.

So glad I found this excellent video. Very timely. I'm torn between getting the new late 2021 Dell XPS 17" 9710 laptop, with the 11th gen i7 chip, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, Windows 11, with either the glossy UHD+(4k) touch screen or the FHD+ matte, non-touch screen. It's only about $150 difference upfront, but the FHD+matte screen apparently gets about 2-4 hours longer battery life, while that UHD+4k screen just looks so darn beautiful, and I just don't know how good the picture quality is on the FHD+ matte screen. I'm going back and forth, torn as to which to get. Any suggestions? I do most of my work indoors, home office, no gaming or video/music editing just long hours online, but I do take the laptop out and about mobile quite a bit for hours at a time and I like having that flexibility. Help! 🙂
@kobi2822
@kobi2822 2 жыл бұрын
If you're already pouring that kind of money into those specs then I would get the UHD+ touch screen instead. You can adjust the resolution in the display settings (I'm sure you can turn the touch screen on or off too), allowing you to switch between resolutions instead of being locked into one. This also opens you up to 4K content for the occasional YT or Netflix streaming. And since you're going to be indoors most of the time, you'll be closer to an outlet. As for mobility, you can always bring an external battery and/or change your settings to a lower resolution to save battery life while on the go. If battery life is still a concern I would look into 'debloating' windows 11 (ie. turning off animations, uninstalling unused programs, etc.) to add some juice to your usage. And if it still doesn't work out, you can exchange it for the other version and find out for yourself.

@@kobi2822 Thanks for the input. You mentioned a few things I was not aware of. Much appreciated, the reply and the excellent original video above! I have a follow up question if you can: I just watched a review describing updates to Windows 11 from Windows 10, and one of them may be especially relevant to my choice here. Windows 11 apparently has greatly increased the number of gesture features usable on a touch screen (Various finger combinations, swipes, palms...). If I don't get a touchscreen, and one is not available on the XPS FHP+ screens, then either those same new gestures would work on the trackpad, or I just wouldn't be able to use them. Do you know, are the new Windows 11 gestures also usable on the Dell trackpad?

I have an ASUS UX410UA machine with a fantastic matte screen - nearly 380 nits, essential for someone like me whose eyesight is not so good as it was. Now four years old and unsupported for WIn11, I wanted to replace it with the Lenovo Slim 7 (your review machine here) but at 300 nits found the Lenovo really quite unusable. Such a shame because in every other respect the Lenovo is a great machine.

Thanks for doing this video. Much to my chagrin, as more and more laptop manufactured go towards GLOSSY (Mirror like) OLED screens it's getting more and more difficult to find laptops with Matte screens. I wonder if any of those after market Anti Glare screen films work well....Maybe a comparison of those options would make for a good video. I would have to think that the manufacturers would be happy to send you samples to test. I know I'd watch that video. I'm jussayin....😉😉

I know the feeling, I can't stand glossy screens. The semi gloss TV I used as a display for 8 years was somewhat bearable but the gloss Microsoft Surface I have is awful. It's really hard to find a suitable screen for my HTPC setup where I do a lot of browsing and some work as well as consuming content and playing games. Matte is a good compromise, I don't really care if the image 'pops' less, it still looks damn good and doesn't have the awful reflections. After putting off upgrading my TV for years because everything was gloss I finally gave in and bought a large format OLED monitor. Unfortunately it was overpriced (I suspect due to a combination of low volume and not selling their soul to advertisers like smart TVs do), has much less control over the image and various settings and the support is absolutely abysmal compared to other panels using the exact same screen as a base. Still, I'm loving it.
@siyzerix

Many years ago I discovered that a Dell that I was planning to buy, and which unfortunately had a GLOSSY screen (the only serious flaw I could find), was such simply because its INTRINSICALLY MATTE screen was covered with a transparent plastic sheet! But I'm talking about ten years ago, today I don't know how things are. @Marrick-Mutya: When you’re looking at the computer-screen and you’re fighting to see the image [that is] on the computer-screen because all you can see is your reflection or the predominant thing you can see is your reflection, you will be forcing your eyesight & struggling to see an image (in this case the computer-screen’s image). Therefore/Thereby, causing eye-strain.
