OMG we need more glossy screens TODAY!!! You can tell the difference right away when the video starts. The reflections are not a big deal when you're engaged with the content on the screen. I have the glossy Steam Deck screen, a huge Samsung Tablet and the Google Pixel that both have awesome glossy screens. The glare is not even a thought unless you actually want to look for it then your mind focuses on it. I don't pay attention to the glare when gaming or reading so it's a non issue, the screens are so much brighter than the indoor surroundings, I can still use both screens in bright rooms even. Now with a 27"-32" glossy panel I can always dim the lights one way or another, because you best believe I'm gonna want the best experience ever. I'm just hoping OLEDs get cheaper soon and bring glossy screens so I can finally jump on the band wagon. 32" QHD (2560x1440p) OLED Glossy panel for $450-$550 would be perfect...still expensive. But considering how 50"-65" inch OLED TVs are cheaper than some of the $800-1000 monitors nowadays, I think it's time to make gaming screens cheaper to reflect their smaller size so more of us buy them.

How is a TV a mobile device? But besides that, I don't think this is about glossy vs. matte. For me it's about having the option to go with glossy if I want to. @@trailchaser2 because as in the video, even without huge lighting near the laptop, the matte display is already looks diffuse in the first place. The whole black on matte does not looks black with the plastic feel screen. With people that prefer the glossy one mostly because the glossy provide way clean, clear and sharp feel image. Even with minor reflection of light which if you refer Dave video, the black on matte is not real black especially the top part of the screen. It's grey. And for us who prefer glossy, we just like clean and sharp image even with minor light reflections. And btw both matte and glossy reflect light just the reflection on matte is more diffuse but affecting more area than glossy. Beside at least for me who prefer glossy, there is some kind of brain thinking that make the glossy screen looks more clean and better when matte which feel abit plastics. Hence, even with lighting reflection, knowing how good the the glossy display looks in controlled environment, the brain trick us to feel that glossy image looks better and cleaner no matter how serious the lighting reflection is.

It's important to note, and most people don't consider the fact that, it isn't just a binary option. Not all matte / anti-glare coatings or technologies are created equal. There are better and worse, more and less extreme options. I would argue that a heavy matt/anti-glare coating is universally bad unless it's an office type environment or a living room design that is always subject to bright windows or something. But there are more subtle implementations that offer a nice in-between balance of clarity while taking the edge off of reflections.

@@Artcore103 It all depends on the use case and type of device: USE CASE: as soon as you're gonna do something else than purely consuming content, reflections are gonna be a major distraction or even a complete obstruction and studying, doing home office or managing important documents in a dark room on aa bright sunshiny day is generally seen as highly unfavorable. PC monitors of any kind are most likely used for office/study work as well, and your fancy expensive gaming monitor shouldn't look ridiculous at those tasks compared to a dirt cheap office monitor. DEVICE TYPE: smartphones and tablets can get away with glossy screens despite being partially used for office and study tasks, because they're easy to relocate, if reflections occur. It's no big deal on those devices. A desktop monitor setup is pretty much fixed in place though. I thinks that's why there's no glossy PC monitors. laptops are a question mark, too. While they are portable, they're not as flexibly deployable as a tablet and since you often look down at the laptop display, reflections from the ceiling lamps are likely. I had a laptop with glossy screen for study and I actually wanted to put a matte foil on it after some time because I got tired of having to put the screen at an odd angle to avoid reflections from the neon lamps in the classrooms, but the one I got didn't actually fit my laptop as advertised and would've looked to tacky to tolerate...

Yes, exactly. As someone who edits photos and video professionally, I find glossy screens far superior. Twenty years ago, there was a thing about editing with matt screens, and people would pay extra for photo editing screens that were matt. I think partly because people couldn’t clearly see the difference because all screens were pretty low contrast then. Even then though, in reality matt screens were hard to edit on, and now that contrast ratios have taken off, the difference is much more obvious. Reflections on glossy screens are, as you indicate, really a non-issue unless you position the screen really badly, and in that case a matt screen will be at least as bad.
