This kid has absolutely everything. Total facility, total musicality, great taste and phrasing. I know Holdsworth is an influence, but to my ear Mancuso is much more musically consonant. Amazing.

His father, Vincenzo Mancuso, was for years the guitarist (live/studio) of one of the most important Italian singer-songwriters, Francesco De Gregori. He grew up in the middle of Music and with Music (the serious Music, not the shit we're forced to listen to today) for which he was "marked" to become an excellent musician !!! :)

And you get people like andy james who was completely self taught and is now one of the biggest names in guitar. It’s all up to you. I know someone who could play the sweet child o mine solo after 2 years and i also know someone who’s only got to grade 5 after 10 years. Put your mind and effort to it and you’ll progress

Conoso da poco Matteo e ci ritrovo tanto di quello che amo: Pastorius, Corea, Saint Jermains, Rush, ... Potrei continuare a lungo perchè ogni pezzo che sto asoltando è pieno di pulsioni. Va be’ che c’entra, hanno due target completamente diversi. I Maneskin sono il classico rock mainstream, e per quel genere e il periodo storico in cui siamo non sono per niente male secondo me. Matteo è un MUSICISTA con tecnica e gusto impressionante, e quindi devi avere una certa conoscenza musicale per apprezzare quello che fa. Non puoi aspettarti che “arrivi” a ignoranti completi o quasi completi in materia.

It’s interesting how he plays at two angles for his right hand, one where it’s the position for playing a pick at 45 degrees (but without a pick), and another angle where it’s more like classical guitar so he can pluck the strings directly up. The first angle enables more string muting because the thumb can rest on the bottom strings, but the second angle enables a crisper sound because he is plucking straight up instead of at a diagonal angle. Both hand positions have their use.

A lot of classical players switch from the first position of the RH to the other position for different reasons. I know when I play usually my RH is mainly in the first hand position, and then switch to the more direct angle for rest strokes and/or a brighter tone. I think he does the different angle for speed and rest strokes a lot.

There's weird comments here.... The guy's awesome and superskilfull adding techniques we haven't seen like this in a while. New generation player taking guitar foward. Dont hate the game nor the player.... He sounds really good leave it that. The biggest crits are the guys who cant do 0.000000567 of what he does. For example he should play he's own tunes. But dont listen long enough or take the time to listen. That he's actually playing he's own stuff!! Or will he sound better with another guitar. Ignorant statements.... Tones in the fingers... This younger cat is legit great. Full stop.

I fully agree. Most of the famous classical instrumentists, Rubinstein, Horowitz, Argerich, Lang, Accardo, Kissin, Segovia ... were never judged because they were not so known as composers. I hope I am not wrong here and I am aware that in rock music this might be different. Matteo is a brilliant player and has all the time to become a great composer. He is now playing classical pieces from Holdsworth, Jaco, Govan, Pass and also his own compositions( I know only this one performed here) which are at the same level in my ears. I admire him for what he is.

I like his right hand picking approach which offers him more dexterity and precision than a pick. It also escapes that "rakey" sweep sound that is so commonly heard. I wonder if he started out playing classical.

I admire a lot the skills of this amazing guitarist: I saw him playing the classical, jazz and prog rock music and also explaining his right hand technique, style pf playing and improvisation. He does know what he is doing. I am amazed how much talent he has, and he looks so genuine. This is the discovery of the year for me.

Don't forget about the old classical guitarists from Italy - Carulli, Carcassi, Legnani, Giuliani, etc., also more modern names like Castelnuovo-Tedesco.

Also - Joe Pass, Pat Martino, Al Caiola, Eddie Lang, Nick Lucas, John Pisano, Jimmy Bruno, Al DiMeola, Robert Conti, even Frank Zappa. Maybe it's something in the pasta sauce.

It is a great thing to put your own personality and stamp on something from someone else you have learnt to play. It is another level altogether when the piece you are starting with is this piece of complexity from GG. I love how MM plays it his own way and doesn't sound like a GG copyist
