I’m surprised Matteo didn’t mentioned Annie Lenox as a 90s Diva since he loves her. She was like alternative diva. Also the beauty of the 90s was the variety of music and how regardless of your taste in music, there was amazing selection in all genre. Even in country, the divas were Reba, Shania Twain, Faith Hill, Martina McBride, etc. For R&B, it was Mary J Bligr, Lauryn Hill, Brandy, Toni Braxton, En Vogue, etc. Yes! There is something about the 90s that Divas were just iconic!!!

I mostly was a grunge chick. But I loved Janet and Whitney as a kid/tween. Janet's music videos were always so great to watch. Brittany and Christina - I was in college by then and they felt a little too young for me. However - one of my strongest memories of that era - Christina playing The Peach Pit After Dark on BH 90210. That's just a defining moment of that era of music for me.

Donna Summer was "the voice". When the woman sang, it was like a shock wave reverberating through you. She had so much control over her voice. The only reason she's not mentioned in the same breath as Whitney, Mariah, Barbra etc, is because she was originally a disco artist. The woman was the original dance~pop diva. She was absolutely HUGE! from the mid 70's to mid 80's.Gaga, Madonna and Janet all stand on her giant shoulders. As a matter of fact, Janet would use Donna's former producers (Pete Bellotte & Giorgio Moroder) on her second album, 1984's "Dream Street".

I love this episode. I’m a huge fan of ALL pop divas pretty much in this era. Whitney is the queen. Janet is my favorite (innovative and always criticized for her vocals but she actually sings VERY well, just not a belter…), and Celine was it in the 90’s because she was eclectic in ways people don’t credit her for. Britney and Christina are fab on their own merits too. I love that you mentioned the people who set the tone - Aretha, Cher, Barbra, Diana… so good to pay homage. We can’t forget about Natalie Cole who brought a jazz album to the mainstream and sang her face off until she died. She was the classy pop diva, and even if her biggest era was the 80’s she deserves to be included next to Whitney and Mariah and Celine as vocal powerhouses. Great episode boys!!!

For certain my most favorite episode ever. Also, there is no Britney, there is no Christina without JANET!
@eddy84463 ай бұрын
What Britney had (and still has today and people somehow give her more trash, mostly because society changed) was the ordinary girl turned popstar. Britney was a regular southern girl following her dreams. She was a beast on stage, with a look in her eyes so sharp it would cut steel but the moment the performance was over, the sweet girl would be back. She was a constant reminder for young people that average jane can still do great things and get to the top of the world and remain the sweetest and most humble person. When everyone was trashing her, from celebs to american mothers, she just never said a bad word. She would leave the house with no make up and in the most ugly outfits but it was cool. Now, social media made it different. No make up is seen as ugly, unkept, washed up. What hurt Aguilera, more than the round of celebs and coworkers saying she is a tough person to deal (pink, jojo, and so on) was that she was always forced to play nice, and when she stopped and released Dirrty... it was too late because by then, I'm A Slave 4 U had already been out for a year. So the "britney copycat" allegations would never stop. I think Aguilera's lack of support these days could be tracked to the same lack of support Nicole from the PCD music's career had. They are both insanely talented but as young artists they felt entitled to success and when america's sweetheart was an average jane, Britney fans were rabid and quick to protect their innocent and virginal queen. There was room for both because Britney always focused more on album sales and Christina on single sales. That's why you name britney hits and her biggest hits weren't #1 but feel like #1, but Christina has a bunch. Even with Britney's album sales declining over the years due to radio bans and tarnished reputation because of Justin, she managed to release a #2 album (#1 if Billboard didn't change the rules last minute) and she was the face of a billion dollar fragrance line. I will say this, a lot of people benefited from the downfall and trafficking of Britney Spears and that's the reason everyone knew, just like Cher pointed out, and nobody said a word.
