Home Hubs which don’t support all protocols shouldn’t be Matter certified until they fix that. The sensor manufacturers are compliant. It’s time for Amazon and Google and Apple to step up.

Matter as well as Thread still has a glaring issue. That is a reliable end user diagnostic system for when things go wrong. Even something as simple as determining if a Matter device is Matter 1.0 or Matter 1.1 or Matter 1.2 is much harder than it should be.

I think the people who benefit for most from matter is builders and home owners. Basically the same reason. When they add permanent fixtures like air conditioners that will stay with the house means that the next tenant/occupier can use these in their preferred eco system. Being able to hook up things like lights and most sensors to different system is good but generally these will be taken when they leave.

I finally took the plunge a few days ago and updated one of my Eve Energy plug (Matter over Thread) from Homekit to Matter. Funny thing is that although my Home Assistant (VM) does not "speak" Thread it found the device and I can control it. I have no idea WHY but I love it :)

Good video as usual Shane. Most of my Accessories are HomeKit ‘native’, and those that aren’t have been added via HomeBridge…the only Matter Accessories that I’ve had to adopt were the Blind Tilts from SwitchBot. They were challenging to keep working properly at launch, but Firmware updates seem to have helped. Anxious to see if anything else gets the Matter logo that will get me to add more to my Smart Home using the standard. 😏 Thanks for the upload!

Thanks for sharing! I anticipate over the years Matter products will slowly start to replace your existing smart home products. You'll be able to continue using your existing native HomeKit products for years to come, but when the day comes that you need to replace certain things, I'm guessing you'll have more and more options that will be Matter certified. I suspect you'll get more Matter products, not because it supports Matter, but because it's just the best option for whatever smart home product you are looking for. As I mentioned in the video, it kind of makes sense for manufacturers to adopt Matter moving forward... especially those that create homekit products. At least we can continue using our existing smart home products until that day comes.

Love how first half you silencing Alexa, then once you started putting them on blast for not supporting buttons Alexa came out like 3 or 4 times in rapid succession. Lol I don’t have any pure Matter products yet, just added the Aqara G4 doorbell and U100 lock to the front door and got the M2 Hun to go with them for no real reason, but may help if I add some other Aqara items down the line. My biggest problem is light switches, lots of options out there, but none quite right for my needs. Hoping to see some improvements in the light switch department, but I’m afraid most companies are focused on the new shiny toys rather than perfecting the old ones.

If this was a $20 or $30 sensor and it didn't work very well, it wouldn't be a big deal. But my expectations go up a fair amount for a $50 device. I ask that because I do have the same feeling after many years and tons of homekit devices. Indeed, I setup some stuffs to a friend's home with Alexa and I found it simpler, cheaper and more reliable. So I wonder if I will not change my entire system. What do you think?

You make some good points especially about the multi admin feature. I'm still not completely sold on Matter quite yet. Once the 1.2 spec is released, hopefully my mind will be changed. Apple definitely needs to step it up in terms of the complexity of the HomeKit framework, but manufacturers also need to write support for the features. Matter has up till now offered the lowest, denominator in terms of features. I like the suggestion for button presses to send text messages for people who are nonverbal. Great use of the smart home!

Thank you for watching. I think any of the Aqara hubs are great. Which one is best for you just depends on your needs (I love that they have options). If you have a need for an indoor camera like the G2H Pro, then yes I absolutely would recommend it as a hub for their other accessories like the LED strip. If you don't need a camera, then maybe the M1S hub or the M2 hub would be a better fit. No wrong answer. Thanks for the timely video, Shane. With 1.2 readying to come out, understanding the state of Matter is really important. Wow - the button not supported in Alexa and Google SmartHomes is scary. I do not want Apple to make that same decision. And buttons?! How do you choose to not support such a ubiquitous item!? I will also be curious to see how the percent of users changes between the top platforms over the next few years and how the number of launched products increases for Apple during the same time. We’ve always been way far behind the other platforms given the rigorous testing Apple demands (which most of us like). If that rigorous process is only required once to get on all platforms, it should be a lot more compelling for manufacturers.

Wow, I watch your show every Wednesday, I’m a dedicated follower and I didn’t know about the matter not working with everything yet. What if these big tech companies felt forced to get together and they didn’t want to, and they just did it as a PR stunt, then after matter comes out. They decide which devices they want to connect to them which ones they don’t and we’re right back to where we were before. If you ask me this is the kind of business that big companies always do. They zig, and then they zag. And one last thing. And I’m just asking? Shouldn’t we all agree to lose the term future proofing? Or future proof your home? Because it’s starting to sound like when always says, “this is the best iPhone we’ve ever made!” I’m starting to hear it every year. I bought Wi-Fi 6 and they said future proof your home and now we’re already up at Wi-Fi 7. Maybe you should be the first to say I’m not using that phrase no more and you can be the leader lol.😂

Since renovating my home earlier this year I’ve gone all-in on a HomeKit smart home and use your advice more than any other content creator. I’m trying to use Thread for every device I can but I’m running into a roadblock finding Thread enabled wired dimmer switches. I bought a few Wemo 2nd gen smart dimmers with Thread and they’re great (as opposed to 1st gen which suck) but they’re sold out. I can’t find any others that are Thread enabled. So here’s my question for you Shane- why aren’t more vendors moving to Thread? The mesh network should be clearly superior to Bluetooth or Zigby. Any insight on why this is?
@Polkster13 Жыл бұрын
WiFi 7 has not been certified yet. A few companies have come out with products purportedly to use WiFi 7 even though the standard has not been finalized. When the standard is finalized by IEEE, then the device you have already bought may not have all of the features and meet all of the specs of the new standard.

I lost connection to Meross matter smart plugs (but Meross non matter HomeKit plugs still working great), lost connection to my Hubitat C-8 hub, and also my Philips WiFi Wiz bulbs. My Lutron switches and Philips hue bulbs all working great. Any suggestions greatly appreciated before I have to rebuild. Issues like this can be hard to diagnose.There may often be issues on the network side of things. iPv6 is often an issue for people using matter products that don’t realize it must be turned on through your router. Make sure that is enabled and configured correctly. Also always a good idea to restart all your HomeKit hubs after major updates. Hope some of this helps!
@heatherprauto6 күн бұрын
@ thanks for your advice! Just wanted to give an update. My husbands Android phone was showing iPv6 but when I went into the router settings I still needed to toggle it on. I restarted everything in the home. But ultimately had to delete the unresponsive matter devices, and re-add them to HomeKit. Even had to delete and add my WiFi Philips Wiz bulbs. Now all those seem to be working well. Unfortunately for my Hubitat, it said it was corrupted and I didn’t have a backup. I had to wipe it completely and now I’m trying to pair my devices back and it’s a struggle with my z-wave Bali blinds. Will need time and patients to tackle all the blinds. Thanks again for all the great advice!

Matter isn’t going to send notifications to your Alexa speaker. Or you may prefer to configure the automations in Alexa instead of HomeKit. Another advantage with Matter when using Alexa, for example, is that you don’t have to trust the manufacturer to build and maintain a proper “Skill”, aka app integration. A lot of those Skills have turned to trash and do not work properly.

A bit off topic, however, I would like to hear how you feel about MyQ / LiftMaster / Chamberlain removing API support. I had MyQ running through HomeBridge, but that was broken by MyQ a few weeks ago. MyQ is requiring users to use the MyQ app with ads. A subscription is required to use HomeAssistant or IFFTTT, there is no HomeKit support. There seems to be a return to custom, non integrating solutions. For example, GM is going to require GM software in their new cars, no more Car Play support. The car companies and MyQ appear to be teaming up to access garage through the car software, rather than use a shared standard. Do you think that this fragmentation will continue? In my case I bought a ismartgate device, connected it, and deleted the MyQ app.
