I always refer to him as “my good friend, Matthew Henry”. When I read his commentary, I feel like I’m conversing with an old friend. Incredibly well written and over-flowing with pastoral care.

I have the one volume version but our church had a yard sale yesterday to raise money for the food ministry, they had the six volume version which my wife picked up for me. Love his writings. His love of God and Christ is undeniable. It permeates every page of the commentary. I would love to see his original notes and works.

Thinking again while reading MH’s commentary on Isaiah 32 this morning. How wonderful it is that The Father placed this man’s life time near the juncture of the seventeenth and eighteenth century, just prior to the great societal changes brought on by the industrial revolution an modernity as we know it. In that epoch mankind’s daily labor and life were still so attached to agriculture that the metaphors and allusions that they easily understood are now lost to most of us living outside of that context. MH helps connecting us moderns with the past. We can be thankful that God can connect us to understanding those things that seem so oblique to our comprehension bringing them front and center.

I’m currently reading through his commentaries and I’m only a layman. I have recommended his commentaries to several of my friends that are Pastors of local Churches. Matthew Henry was also quite a scholar with extensive knowledge in both the Hebrew and the Greek languages (which is seriously lacking in today’s scholars). Don’t underestimate the learning of the 18th century.

Matthew Henry is essential. I never write a sermon, study, lecture, or teaching without consulting him. Spurgeon is a giant among men as you said, and the interesting thing about him is that he almost exclusively read and recommended presbyterian, paedobaptist and reformed guys, even as a committed baptist. Blessings brother.

Thanks for sharing on this topic Steve, appreciate that. Matthew Henry certainly is a classic and worth while. I have in the past heard/read several commendations that it ought to be read all the way through, but I did not know that Spurgeon recommended that as well, very interesting! My copy is digital in Logos, maybe I should pay more attention to it! Blessings from Canada.

Matthew Henry is one of those commentaries that can be immensely hopefully, but sadly in my case I must admit too often over looked. I have a one volume edition hardback and the full set digitally, but don't refer to it as often as I would like. I do love how this man was so steeped in God's Word and clearly very well studied, yet he makes everything so pastoral and relevant to his readers. I find that a great challenge and encouragement as I try to teach the Bible. Great video as always!

The commentaries of the sixteen, seventeen, and eighteen hundreds were generally strong in their stand for morality and clarity of biblical expression and practicality. Matthew Henry, Albert Barnes, Adam Clarke, John Bengel, and James MacKnight wrote commentaries that still maintain practicality and simplicity.

The Old Testament scholar, Brevard Childs, in his book “Old Testament Books for Pastors and Teachers” mentions Matthew Henry too. Childs was a sort of “neo-orthodox Barthian” scholar at Yale. Yet he highly recommended Matthew Henry, even suggesting that Spurgeon borrowed a lot of his sermon material from him. Henry is very good for sermon making just for his outlines alone.

Matthew Henry commentary from the 1700s is slightly archaic. Martin Manser has updated the language of Matthew Henry. Abridged Matthew Henry of Martin Manser came out first and later the Unabridged Matthew Henry by Martin Manser came out.

On bible hub, Eliot is so terrible and pulpit is so terrible but the next 1 is Matthew Henry and he gets to the actual bible message of God and Christ to Israel. He is great. After skipping past Eliot constant Tennyson and other non biblical human illogic applications, Henry is a refreshing perspective pinned back on YHVH message to his people.

I’m not gonna lie, I have always skipped MH’s commentary when doing research in Verbum (Logos). Much of this is admittedly due to “chronological snobbery” (e.g., MH didn’t have the evidence from the papyri, Nag Hammadi and DSS, it’s devotional but with many historical misconceptions, etc.). Will have to consult it a little more.
@BiblicalStudiesandReviews2 жыл бұрын
Definitely more devotional. But MH was a master Scriptorian and pulls together insights that aren’t always obvious. Little insights here and there. Definitely worth consulting

@@BiblicalStudiesandReviews Yes, it's the same product for Roman Catholics. Despite their good theological writing's that l was more shocked that reading Foxes book of Marty's,they did same. Bad very bad.
