I was about 14/15 not really interested in football. Didn’t have a club side I supported but followed England. My dad had just brought sky tv and Southampton vs Newcastle was the first Monday night game since the install. Matt letissier gets that ball headed to him, takes a touch on his thigh and volleyed it from 25 yards. 10 minutes later he dinked it over one, dinked it over two, dinked it over 3 and slotted it home. I was hooked!!!

One of the most naturally gifted players of all time. I think he just had a can’t be bothered attitude (which sometimes he did show on the pitch) hence why he stopped at Southampton all of his career and really did not get the recognition he deserved

The main reason he never moved is because his wife didn't want to move. He grew up a spurs fan and the first offer he got was spurs. Spurs were a top tier team in those days. Contracts were agreed, and his wife said she didn't want to live in London. He got plenty of big money offers, world record offers at the time. She said no.

Thanks for reacting to this! 😁 To give you some context, Le Tissier was a hugely skilled player. However, rather than move to a bigger club (which he could have done, easily) he stayed loyal to Southampton FC. He enjoyed being a big fish in a small pond. He pretty much single handedly carried the team for many years, and saved them from relegation. But he was lazy - he'd sometimes skip training altogether, and his fitness levels suffered. Sadly, despite his skill, he only played for England a handful of times, although in his debut match with England he scored a hat-trick ⚽

Another comment about Le God is that he was listed as a midfield player and was the first midfield player to reach 100 goals in the Premier League.

Being a Southampton fan I had the pleasure of watching him play, week in, week out. An immensely talented footballer who would have won loads more international caps had he not been English.

Best player who never got an England cap, and all because he was loyal to Southampton for giving him a career. Selectors are stupid.

If Le Tessier had played for one of the traditional ‘big clubs’ Man U, Liverpool etc, instead of loyally staying with Southampton, he probably would be mentioned in the same breath as the all time greats

Fully agree. Partly because of his skill, and partly because the level of training and coaching was obviously of a different calibre at those clubs. Ah well, he had a great career, and did everything on his terms. Sometimes it's better to be a local legend

Southampton fan: This man could have gone elsewhere and he could have actually gone done it with our blessing. The fact that he stayed with us for his entire career is ridiculous and the fact that he only got 8 or 9 England caps is nothing short of a travesty. We were so blessed at Saints to have this guy.

To be fair there was no shortage of English attacking talent throughout the 90's. However I agree he should have had many more international appearances than he had, perhaps an element of snobbery from those England coaches at the time because he played for Southampton and not for a top Premier League side.

The 3 flick goal and the goal when he took the ball on his thigh and volleyed it into the top corner were in the same match, after he had previously been dropped by a very bad manager who wanted work rate rather than skill.
