This is a safe and cheap alternative to the heli safe setup.
Fishing traditional chod or helicopter rigs in weed or rocks can be a problem. The classic trick I’m showing in this video, based on a rotten bottom, means you can fish these setups safely without having to drop the lead every time.

I use a very similar method but with the varying strength c clips available. I mostly use semi fixed running rigs as I almost exclusively fish rivers, and again use the same c clips but in heavier poundage to handle up to 8oz grippers but still drop them if snagges

Check out gemini sea fishing rotten bottom clips. Can full on beach cast and clip releases lead when it hits the water meaning the lead is only held to rig by the weaker mono once it enters the water. But allows full on cast with all the strain going onto clip. Get about 50 for £5 carp fishing is so expensive compared to sea.

Standard helicopter rigs and chod rigs work great but if the weed is too thick they can also prevent us from landing what we hook. This is where the rotten bottom technique comes in. This method is not new. In fact it has been used in various types of fishing for many years, it’s just been forgotten about and lost in the melee of modern carp angling. I hope this video helps some anglers to (re)discover this little trick! Hi Matt, another great informative video, thanks. I actually use similar with Gardner 'C' clips :-) On another slightly off-topic (sorry i couldnt find a video where you covered the question). I recently did a 48hour catfish trip and using live bait off a dumbell i had a few missed runs. Speaking with other anglers afterwards at the water ALL of them had different advice re striking to hook a fish on a run. Some insisted to wind down sideways, others wind down verticle, some saying strike quickly if an eagle wave and others saying not to strike but to treat the same as if it were a Circle hook. It seems none had the same advice on what is an important point. This does not restrict to live dumbell setups of course as they all differed on when and how the best hook-up should be. Maybe a very worthwhile topic to consider. your advice is always respected. thanks Algy.

Hi mate, yes I’m aware of the C-Clips. I’ve never tried them myself but they are on my list! I'm not really the best person to ask this question as I don’t fish for catfish using traditional catfish methods. I use boilies over a bed of pellets with stepped up carp rigs. For me, dedicated catfish hooks all suffer from the same problem. They aren't sharp! Not when you compare them to hooks from the Nash pinpoint range. If I did want to use live baits for cats, then my starting point would be a chod Twister is a size 2 (it’s the biggest they do) It’s only available in micro barbed so I’d crush the barb. Food for thought perhaps? Cheers, Matt. Joe totally agree, with C clips you get the same effect without the faf and they do them in different strengths. You can use this "old school" weak link way if you don't have C clips but they are less fiddly and better at doing the same job.

@matthewcollinsangler Honestly I'm going to incorporate that into my choddy and helicopter rigs when fishing in really weedy spots ,hopefully if I can avoid then . I will but all the good food is in that weed which holds them up. So it needs to take a visual bait to entice that curious feeding fish? Lol Thanks again mate. 👌👌

@@michaelmarkey2865 I’ve caught loads of carp from weedy waters on nothing more than a standard bottom bait straight out of the bag, usually a dull coloured food bait like Scopex Squid. I don’t worry about bright colours or anything like that. I don't worry about balanced baits either. If they want it, they’ll have it. Worrying about that kind of thing just adds doubt and confusion which is the last thing I need 😊

A good alternative is to cut a section out of a thin black paper clip, form c-clip shape and use this the attach the lead, it keeps the lead attached securely for casting, but in the event of a snag the paperclip material opens quite easily releasing the lead.

If you dump the lead on a heli then snap off for whatever reason it's much more dangerous for the carp as that top bead has no resistance from the lead to pull up and off. Just try shaking a heli system to where the top bead flyes off without a lead. Kordas heli safe could mean fish towing leadcore for a while. Not a fan but I get the reasons for it.

Wow, how exciting! So, you have several choices. My first choice would be boilies. My second choice would be tiger nuts but these must be properly prepared (I buy mine pre-prepared). If you are looking for a reliable bait that is cheap and readily available everywhere then it would have to be sweet corn. Good luck, Matt.

What setup would you say is the safest rig setup helicopter or inline running rig thanks
@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler 5 ай бұрын
Hi Michael, all rigs can be set up safe and all rigs can be set up in a dangerous manner. The devil really is in the details on this one. What you have to ask yourself is what’s going to happen in the event of a mainline failure and a carp picks up the rig. Personally I don’t use helicopter rigs as they are not appropriate for my fishing. All of the rigs I use are running rigs, be it inline or swivel. Most of my customers use running inline leads. These have proved to be very safe over the long run as the lead is lost very quickly if the line breaks. I talk a bit about this in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZzZqqtsmLCrec0si=4m4vjOTbTX7UjaEI

As the inventor of the first heli release system, the Atomic Chopper Dropper, it's actually quite difficult to break the mono or pull the knots with a carp rod. There's a big clue in the test curve of your rod, then add the stretch of mono. In weed you line can be in a big curve and this also restricts your pull on the weak link. Instead of the light mono, tie on a short length of leadcore, with a spliced loop. Slide the lead on the leadcore, then add a rubber bead - this holds the lead on the retrieve, then add a bit of PVA nugget in the spliced loop. Pull it all down so the PVA nugget is holding everything. You can bang it 200y no problem and it's idiot proof.
@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler Жыл бұрын
Hi James, I hadn’t heard of the Chopper Dropper, thanks. I totally see the logic of your system with leadcore and a bead, it still means you drop the lead every time 🤔 The rotten bottom works for me and my fishing but it’s good to hear about other options out there.

Sorry but a leader of any sort fished helicopter style needs the weight of the lead to loose the leader in a break . Loosing the lead leaves the fish trailing the leader
@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler Жыл бұрын
You’re right but this system works because the rotten bottom won’t break until the rig has safely been drawn off the leader (with the right materials and knots for the situation). If for some reason the rig gets snarled up while the mainline is still being drawn through the swivel, the rotten bottom will then break which is better than tethering the carp to the bottom. The carp still has to free itself of the mainline etc. but that’s the case with any helicopter or running rig. It’s why I only ever use barbless hooks. The rotten bottom also breaks if the lead gets stuck when you are trying to reel it in so it's a good option over rocky ground.
