Targeting a new 70 acre water this autumn and I’m making a few tweaks to my setup.
I have a lot of confidence in my approach on big waters but after the first couple of sessions on a new water, I felt I had to make a few tweaks.
When I go to a new water, I don’t make big changes but there’s always something new to learn and I will tweak things if required. My starting point is always a mono rig and a running lead because it works wherever I go, even over silt. This time, my challenge was that I was casting 100 yards into a strong wind and I had to make small adjustments to my rig to increase my catch rate.
That’s what is so brilliant about mono rigs. Once you master that knotless knot and either fish a hair rig, a D-rig or the long forgotten bait loop rig, you can take that rig with you from water to water as you progress through your carp fishing journey. If you go to a new water, you just need to pick a bait mounting option and choose the right diameter mono for the range you’re fishing. That’s it. Then it’s just a question of timing, location and bait application.
I did 5 day sessions on this new lake this autumn and I caught at least one carp per visit. In total I caught 12 carp to 40 lbs with no lost leads and no hook pulls. I built up plenty of confidence in my long distance running lead setup and I managed to create a super anti tangle mono snowman rig along the way.
