Snowman Mono Rig: Why Didn’t I Think Of This Before❗

Targeting a new 70 acre water this autumn and I’m making a few tweaks to my setup.
I have a lot of confidence in my approach on big waters but after the first couple of sessions on a new water, I felt I had to make a few tweaks.
When I go to a new water, I don’t make big changes but there’s always something new to learn and I will tweak things if required. My starting point is always a mono rig and a running lead because it works wherever I go, even over silt. This time, my challenge was that I was casting 100 yards into a strong wind and I had to make small adjustments to my rig to increase my catch rate.
That’s what is so brilliant about mono rigs. Once you master that knotless knot and either fish a hair rig, a D-rig or the long forgotten bait loop rig, you can take that rig with you from water to water as you progress through your carp fishing journey. If you go to a new water, you just need to pick a bait mounting option and choose the right diameter mono for the range you’re fishing. That’s it. Then it’s just a question of timing, location and bait application.
I did 5 day sessions on this new lake this autumn and I caught at least one carp per visit. In total I caught 12 carp to 40 lbs with no lost leads and no hook pulls. I built up plenty of confidence in my long distance running lead setup and I managed to create a super anti tangle mono snowman rig along the way.

I’ve never been keen on using a snowman on a mono rig. It just doesn’t sit very well. While fishing this new water, I had the idea of using a knotless knot rig known as a bait loop rig. I think it was meant to be used with pop ups but it works great with a snowman. The snowman sits upright and thanks to a pivot underneath, the hook flicks vertically downwards as soon as the bait is lifted. The tiny D sits very close to the shank right in the middle of the hook. It means the hook point is hanging virtually flat when it’s lifted and this makes a big difference to the number of hookups you get. Another thing I like is that it’s super easy to tie, in fact it’s probably easier to make than a hair rig or mono D. Does anyone else know this rig? Let me know what you think 😊

This is very much how match anglers mount a wafter or boilie on a much smaller hook where you can’t use swivels of bait spikes on the hook it’s funny many things pass from carp fishing into the match scene but not usually in the other direction I like the simplicity of this and will give it a try

Been using the Snowman on Mono since 2011... killer method, Rinsed Tall Trees with it... 3x20's 2x Doubles, and a New PB... Nash NRG 16mm bottom + 10mm popup Nowadays, its a little more refined with a Scopex squid 16mm bottom and an 8/10mm popup, I use a softer hair though, a lighter loop whipped onto the hook under the knotless knot so you have some flexibility in the bait

Hi Matthew, thank you for sharing your ideas. Could you do away with the swivel and just leave 3-4mm gap to the hookshank, using a longer piece of baitfloss, or do you need the micro swivel to make sure the bait does not tangle around the hookshank ? I tend to fish a little smaller hooks, a single 18mm boilie, 2 x 10mm or a small boilie and a plastic sweetcorn. Cheers from Denmark

Hi Matt, thanks for your very valuable tips and demystifying the ‘fancy rig materials’. I just wanted to come back to an older topic we ‘discussed’ some time ago. You may remember that I got myself a Pesola spring gauge and did some tear tests with different types of main lines and different knots. In the video, you tied a blood knot and it failed. Of course, every knot should be tested before use, I had to learn it the hard way too! The better choice here might have been a Palomar. My measurements revealed that the Palomar was the only knot (I tested Grinner, Blood and Palomar) where I was able to exceed the breaking strain by up to almost 150%. I'm not sure if that's just some kind of good marketing that the actual breaking strain is so much higher thsan what is written on the spool. With the blood knot, I was only able to get 81-100% of the official breaking strain. That may still be enough to survive, but after losing fish due to a failed knot, any responsible angler should know that even if you can tie the Blood Knot very well, it has its limits and e.g. the Grinner or (much easier to tie) the Palomar should come into play. I hope this helps (maybe not you personally but some other anglers may give it a try). Cheers Alex
@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler 2 ай бұрын
Hi Alex, it’s very interesting to hear your results as I spent a lot of time testing the palomar with mono and I certainly never achieved above 100%. I recommend the palomar knot to guests when tying directly to a swivel using 0.40 or 0.45 mono as it’s an easy knot to get right. But I’m so used to tying a ½ blood knot for 0.50 or 0.60 mono that I’m very confident in this knot. If I could use the palomar for connecting hook links then I’d be better and quicker at it. While in theory you can, it's a faff to pass the hook back through the loop. Bear in mind that I pull really hard and aim to apply 75% of pull force just to tighten the knot. 75% of 30lbs (0.50) mono is still 22 ½ lbs which is 6.9 times the test curve of the rod. Anyway, an interesting topic 😊
@herrjanssen8531
@herrjanssen8531 2 ай бұрын
@@matthewcollinsangler Hi Matt, sorry for my late reply but as usual I'm very busy at work so I can't spend much time watching videos or writing comments. As for your experience of not getting over 100% of the stated breaking strain, that very rarely happened in my tests (except for the Blood knot...). As you know, the breaking strains of various fishing lines are specified rather conservatively. But the manufacturers (e.g. ESP) also state that the actual breaking strain can be much higher if (mechanically) good knots are used. ESP states a breaking strain of up to 26lbs for the syncro loaded XT 18lbs line that I prefer. That is therefore 8lbs or 44.4% more. This reflects the values I have achieved. I have obtained similar values with the Nash Bullet (18lbs). However, the Syncro XT was always slightly better. Of course, you can never get into this range while fishing, because you can't even begin to apply this amount of force with a carp rod. At least this was the realisation for me that I no longer want to use the Blood knot. My 5 turn grinners are not always 100% good enough for me, so I have chosen the path of least resistance and use the Palomar wherever it seems possible and reasonable. I hope this explains a little better what I meant.

Put the line through the hook as normal, make a loop put your swivel on as well as this point. Then wrap your line around as normal (Looks around 7-8 turns) then back through the eye. This should hold it tight enough from pulling through.
@MrMerciless67

@chrismackey4238 don't think you'd need to pass it through three times as you're not forming a D which is what the 3rd time is for. If you're getting trouble passing the line through three times try a whipping knot and you'll only need to pass the the material through the eye twice.

@@MrMerciless67 Managed to tie one up with fox 0.64mm Link. Went through the eye then back through again to form the loop. Whipped down 7-8 times then one whip under the loop to make it stand off a little. Then pulled the tag back through and cut it down so the hook link end could fit back through the eye. Turned out good. Nice rig. Would use with rig foam though as i think there is potential for the hook to twist and stick in the boilie.

Hi Mathew, great video as always. I do love a snowman as I have had a lot of success with them in the past so have obviously made a few up after seeing this 😊. Having followed your videos for some time now and having often put a lot of your advice into practice, always with positive results (thank you), I have a couple of questions if I may. 1. I have used your deadly d-rig and it does currently account for my PB catfish and for one of the only two of the a team carp I had yet to catch on a venue I have been fishing for some time (both with salt cured bottom baits due to the cray fish problems I was having on the carp venue so thank you again). However, I have also fished it with snowmen, but based on a comment & answer in this video about that being a bottom bait rig, do you think it was a mistake fishing it with a snowman or would it only be a mistake at extreme range or do you think its just less effective at any range as a snowman? 2. If you could only fish one rig for a bottom bait for the rest of your life, would you choose your deadly d-rig or killer hair rig (or some other rig which I doubt as I am sure I would have seen it 😊)? 3. My only concern with the stiff/thick mono rigs, which I do use almost exclusively, is if the fish comes in from the lead end, that when compared to a combi type rig for example, there would not be enough slack to drawer the rig up into the fish’s mouth. What are your thoughts on this please? I assume it’s a possibility but the resetting properties and the fact the fish may circle back from another angle after potentially failing to pick it up outweighs that risk in your mind? 4. A cheeky bonus question if that is OK but not one not related to this video. My son and I are going on our first ever abroad fishing trip to France in late June when he finishes his GCSE’s but unfortunately not Beausoleil (& thank you yet again as I had previously thanked you in 7 Years of Tackling Harder Waters as all your videos had helped me move from easier day tickets to harder syndicates but they have also now given me the confidence to take this next step ❤). Do you have any advice for going for a week’s carp (and cat) fishing in France for the first time and you can assume the rigs will be the one in this video, deadly d-rig or killer hair rig with .60 mono.
@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler 2 ай бұрын
Hi mate, here are the answers to your questions: 1. No it wasn't a mistake. My bait loop rig is just another option that ticks all the boxes. It adds extra control of the bait position relative to the hook so there’s even less chance of something going wrong. It’s a confidence thing at the end of the day. 2. I’d probably stick with the mono hair because it’s quick to tie, and uber simple. It works everywhere I take it and by changing the diameter of the mono I can make it work in any situation. 3. I know many anglers can’t wrap their head around how a simple semi stiff mono hook link can work and they think that you need a supple section next to the hook. You don’t. I don’t care what direction the carp comes from. As long as he’s close, I have a chance. Combi rigs introduce complications and tangle risk and when you take them out to the type of waters I fish, their weaknesses are exposed. I don’t need a coated braid to catch carp and I don’t think anyone does. 4. Use a running rig that suits the venue, take 6-8 packs of nash chod Twisters and change your hooks every cast. Use a good bait rather than lots of cheap bait (Scopex Squid works everywhere I take it). Hope that helps 😊

I really like your videos and thought process. I can understand how tangle resistant this rig would be but I am curious how this rig works when fish approach the bait from different directions. My concern, with a rig using a stiffer material straight through, is would it hinder the hook catching hold as it may hold the hook at the wrong angle to catch. In my mind I would prefer something that allows the hook a bit more freedom to turn and drop down regardless of the direction the fish picks it up from. I am no expert though and happy to learn.

Hi mate, to be honest, I’m not concerned about which way the carp comes from. The material is supple enough for the bait to fly up into the mouth and for the hook to catch hold. I’ve caught 1000’s of carp on mono rigs, either mono hair, mono d or this simple variation. This is all I need 😊

Matthew dumpy or distance lead at short range into silt ? Which is likely to go in deeper. .? Some clay areas as well which really grab a lead
@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler 2 ай бұрын
Hi Andy, hmm, good question! TBH I have absolutely no idea! The most important thing for me would be to use as light a lead as you need to get the distance. If you only need to cast 50 yards then you don’t need anything heavier than a 2oz (regardless of shape). The next most important factor is your casting style. You really need to master hitting the clip and landing the lead to fish silt effectively. This is easier in deep water and harder in shallow water but it’s actually more important to do well in shallow water. Hope that helps. Cheers, Matt.

They used to fish well against the islands or the none access sections Now bites mainly come from the middle or near margins & sometimes I have to lay line on the bank to fish within 6 inches of the bank Andy

In the highly unlikely event that I have a 30lb hooklink and 12lb mono, and I have to pull for a break, the mainline would fail at the knot near the rig, because the mainline knot is the weakest link. In that case, the fish would only be trailing the hooklink and the leader (if I’m using one). I only fish with running rigs so the carp is never trailing a lead, and I only fish with barbless hooks so the carp can easily get rid of the hook and line if required.

Any reason you prefer to use a run rig clip instead just putting the lead on
@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler 27 күн бұрын
I'm not a big fan of having the swivel lead running directly on the mainline. I prefer the larger diameter of a dedicated plastic run ring because it's safer (because the run ring is less likely to jam up) and I can also take the leads on and off quickly at the start and at the end of the session.

We'll do a full how-to on this rig but in a nutshell, after passing the material through the eye of the hook, fold it in 2 and tuck the tag end through the eye to make the loop. Close it down to the length of the shank and whip the knotless knot over the top. Cut the tag end. Fold the short loop away from the shank to kick it out 👍

@matthewcollinsangler 20 күн бұрын
@@michaelhedges41070 I use this rig with a swivel running rig only, rigs like these are too stiff to be used with an inline lead unless the bottom is very clean. I've seen the Evolve tackle system but haven't tested it. I use the running rigs I show on this channel. Cheers, Matt

Hi Matthew, asking some for advice on a river with very strong current. I have to fish leads 6-10oz delivered via bait boat to hold bottom due to the currents pressure on my line. Any advice on baiting in this scenario and a lead set up when fishing with such heavy weight? Water is approximately 20 ft deep.
@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler 2 ай бұрын
Hi Nick, I don't have experience with that type of scenario... My solution for fast flow is to fish shorter in the near margin with a 3.5oz running lead. You don't have to fish the far margin on a river to catch carp. Most of my river carp are caught at 5 to 10m distance. I use 24mm Scopex Squid baits. I wouldn't use anything smaller or lighter.

I'm on a new 140 acre Res with a unknown stock done a few sessions would you recommend pre baiting a area and fishing it constantly or just go on the wind when I arrive?
@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler 15 күн бұрын
Hi mate, on big waters, I fish the deepest water I can find on the north side of the lake. I then choose to fish when the wind is blowing the carp towards me. I bait in advance of the right wind conditions, then I rock up and cast out my tangle free mono rig and running lead. Works every time for me.

Why wouldn't you use a d rig? Exactly the same excrpt the cyra movement allows the bait to get out of the way of the hook?
@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler 2 күн бұрын
Yes, a D rig is also an option and I’ve certainly fished with D rigs a lot over the last few years (kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKOXoZSLaqeSqJY) but occasionally I have had the bait wrap around the shank a few times which ruins the presentation. I’ve not tested this bait loop option as much as I have my deadly D rig but so far it appears to be even more robust and it’s just impossible for the bait to wrap around the hair if you make them up as I’ve done here.

What advantage does the “bait loop” have over a “D rig” ?
@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler 2 ай бұрын
Hi mate, I’m using this instead of a d rig because I want to fix the pivot point halfway down the shank. With a d rig the bait can slide up and down the loop which is a tangle risk at the range I was fishing which was 100yds in big head winds.

Hi Mathew, I just have a question. I many match fish but was thinking of getting to spiemen fishing too. I just wanna ask how do you stay entertained for like 24 hours 😂.As it seems like it gets a bit boring
@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler 2 ай бұрын
That’s a great question! If you are transitioning from match angling to specimen angling then 24hrs to catch one fish can seem like a lot of time to fill. For me, the session starts before I’m on the bank. The secret to success in this game is all in the prep so I take the time it takes to get things spot on. Feature finding is an important part of carp angling but unless you are on a week long session you should do your feature finding before you actually fish. Baiting up is another important aspect of the sport. I will usually pre bait before I fish as well as during the session. One of the reasons I use mono rigs is that I find rig tying therapeutic. It gives me something to do, something to concentrate on and because I use rigs at a rate of up to one per cast, I always need fresh rigs. It’s as important to enjoy just being there. If you don’t actually enjoy sitting by a lake and being in nature and absorbing all its wonders then perhaps specimen fishing isn't for you. Nowadays of course, many anglers are glued to their phones but I prefer to minimise my screen time while on the bank. For entertainment I prefer to read. It stimulates the mind and you can get lost for hours in a good book. At the end of the day, it’s a very personal experience and the only way to find out whether it’s the right type of fishing for you is to experience it 😊 All the best.

Oki do you think that straight point hooks are better for fishing?
@matthewcollinsangler
@matthewcollinsangler 2 ай бұрын
@@jarekkolanos7674 It's not a question of straight hooks being better than beaked point or the other way around. I don't think one is better than the other but some hooks suit certain rigs better. The Nash chod claws are very sharp and strong and they have a beaked point, but the other difference is the eye size is larger. So if I wanted to make a D rig with 0.60 mono, I could use a size 6 chod claw rather than having to use a size 2 or 3 Nash chod twister.

On big park lakes like these, the fish are always at range. They only come in the shallows at certain times of year, there is too much disturbance on the lake margins, noice, cyclists etc, and they don't show there. The only shows I see are at 200yds.

I don’t understand how you can be so sure your rig isn’t sitting up in the air or over debris with such a stiff hook long? I’d be concerned of presentation with this rig especially as you have limited knowledge of what it’s landing on even if you do feel with a lead I can’t see that being accurate enough information at such long range for this rig ? Just my thoughts great vid 👍🏻

Hi mate, well, all I can say is that I caught 12 carp from 20 to 40lb in 5 sessions on a new big park lake. I'm very happy with the results I’m getting with this rig and that’s why I’m happy to recommend it. It’s not massively different from what I always use in my fishing, it’s a slight variation of the knotless knot.
