i kind of disagree. i think spike does add angst but he also makes shinji sound too jolly, probably because he has to constantly shoot for a jolly high-pitched tone to match a young boy (thats the advantage of a woman voicing a boy) so ig i dont see spike adding anger. i think casey sounds angier tbh the rare times that spike does shoot for angry it just turns into kermit and it gets all throaty and almost comedic, but i respect liking the original, its the first impression that was offered to you as a viewer, provided you didnt just watch the sub. like for example a lot of people who grew up with the ADV say netflix made Ms Misato sound too old, however shes 29, so its honestly more fitting. BUT, it still went against how people came to learn about the character. (plus i think ms misatos old voice has a lot of charm and fits her personality)

This was an issue with EVERY character for a good half of the ADV dub, but his voice will always be my favorite. (My personal favorite scene of his in the original was during the Leliel fight, when he’s punching the walls of Eva 001 trying his hardest to get out, I felt so bad for him there :(

Spike Spencer imo is the definitive Shinji Ikari. OG dub was good but had that tinge of 90’s campiness to it. Not everyone’s cup of tea. But Spencer’s grip on the Shinji character has gotten even better over the years. His work in the Rebuilds is phenomenal.

I truly believe Spike nails it every time he voices Shinji. He roasts him, but, he gets it. Something I always liked about the OG dub was sure, there were some shoddy performances, but for the main cast, there was a real rawness that fit the show. Now Casey's take on Shinji, oh my God dude they were born to play him. Easily the best casting choice. It's a little thing but, Shinji being voiced by a woman, a man, and also a non-binary person just add even more layers to the character. Tl;dr Shinji just fucking rules bro.

@Julian R Agreed, the Amazon dubs are pretty severely uneven with the 2.22 dub in particular being a huge downgrade from Funimation - not to mention bizarre technical issues like inconsistent sound quality between voices and randomly switching in the Japanese audio for screaming and crying scenes, which I hope they fix at some poing - but it’s worth it to hear Spencer’s performance at the end of 3+1.

The early ADV dub is rough around the edges, but you can tell that the heart is there, and it improves pretty quickly. Biggest issue with those first few episodes is how shouty everyone is during intense scenes (as you can see here), where both of Spencer's Rebuild performances and Mongillo's performance on Netflix more accurately capture the quieter moments of intensity implied by the animation and Ogata's performance. Also, perhaps there's an argument to be made for Shinji always referring to Gendo as "father"...but no, I really prefer him to use "dad" sometimes.

I was really happy to hear the original cast was returning until hearing how this was scripted and the way they were directed. Lines feel flat and stiff. Energy levels don’t match between characters mid-conversation. Shinji’s fearful voice has been toned down. Might just hold off on watching altogether if Amazon is just doing what netflix did to the lines of the series. :/

It’s not really the cast, more the script, which hinders the casts performance. A lot of people are also annoyed because of how the original cast members (who were interested in returning) were completely snubbed and given pity auditions, then given NDAs just so they wouldn’t say anything. It was just a generally weird process while being straight disgusting towards the main cast.

Megumi Ogata has to be my favourite I was generally surprised when I found out it was a female voice actress voicing shinji on the og and not an actual young Japanese boy, she was so good at her delivery. Also she has the best shinji scream out of the entire versions, shinji in the og really did sound like he was going through genuine horrific pain when he screamed, and that's all thanks to Megumi Ogata. Not that any of others didn't have good screams, but the og shinji really did sound and feel like raw traumatised screams for help that a real teenage boy would give out.

I like the Netflix dub better. When I watch it on Netflix I feel invested in the high stakes situations and genuinely worried about the character’s safety when in close contact with the angels. The ADV dub just causes me to laugh at the delivery, although it really does have an advantage in the dialogue for certain scenes.

no shade to anyone who enjoys eva in english or to the voice actors but there's no way i could feel bought into the characters and their emotions while watching the english dub, it all sounds so forced and fake to me. the japanese performances feel so raw and realistic in tone and expression, as well as sounding like they're the actual age of the characters. maybe i'd have a different opinion if i understood japanese, I'm not sure, that's just how I feel.

the same way that japanese think english sounds cool in foreign movies. i'd say casey mongillo did pretty well in the dub. spencer is unsufferable, tho.

I watched this through Netflix on my first watch in English, my roommate just finished in Japanese, so I started the 2021 dub of Rebuild and... I turned it off after 20 minutes because it sounded so off to me. It sounds like Spike Spencer doing an impression of Spike Spencer being Shinji. The rest of the cast (to the point of me stopping) didn't have that same kind of goofiness in their voices so it was hard for me to take seriously. I do think the other dubs of his sound good, but the 2021 re-dub to me sounds misguided

I feel the same way I was watching the re dub on Amazon just to check it out. Although I'm happy they got the original voice actors, but I still prefer the Funimation dub for the rebuilds. You are right about Spike Spencer, he just didn't sound as natural to me, it sounded like he was forcing that younger boy voice. But thats down to the director not him. I think Spike sounded his best 1.11 and 2.22 with the Funimation Dub Mike McFarland was his director and worked with him to sound a little more manly. The question I have is Funimation is still gonna Dub the 4th movie even though that might be redundant, but thats just weird to have the first 3 movies dubbed by Funi and then not do the 4th one, it would make sense for continuity reasons.

@Julian R I know what you mean I don't trust Funimation any more either, I just wanted them to at least finish their streak with the rebuild movies. I think they've went down hill in the last few years, there's been some shady things going on behind the scenes. Like I said I'm still glad they got many of the OG cast back.

@Julian R wow I'm surprised they got as many actors back as they did even people from the manga dub, it's cool they even got Jason Lee to play Aoba again, obviously because Amanda Winn Lee came back too. I thought Fuyutski sounded familiar but I couldn't believe they got him back from the EOE dub. That's good although some of the direction like you said is hit or miss, I do think some of the actors do well even some of the new comers. Some of it erks me probably because I have a pre conceived way of looking at it because I'm so used to the Funi dub, it probably wouldn't be as bad if it was your first time watching the movies. Watching the 4th probably won't be bad because you've got no prior dub to compare it to.

@Julian R So is the 4th movie dubbed well? I have to ask because I can't watch it at the moment. This might be personal but I've got some health concerns right now, and I'm waiting to get better so I can enjoy watching it 100%. I'm sorry I keep dragging this discussion. Thanks for replying to me I had to get this stuff off my mind because I'm excited about all this.

@Julian R yeah it looks Like it's a cool movie the Cinematography looks good. Thanks for hoping I'm OK. I should get better eventually. I just gotta keep up with my medicinal treatments.
