To be fair, the same problem applies in most games that feature swords and guns. It's just… so much more obvious when the defining characteristic of the weapon is that it cuts through ANYTHING.

Star Wars: Jedi Academy had the most realistic light saber physics in any game. Unless they were armored or bosses all enemies could be killed with just one clean slash.

Fun fact, in Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy and other games, you could actually cut enemies' limbs and heads off. Or even cut them in half. This was achieved by using a code in the dev console.

This is why I love JK games like Jedi Academy. The only game I've ever seen that does lightsabers right. Not only is the combat system for lightsabers the best I've ever seen, but the damage feels just like in the movies. Unless they have some absolutely crazy armor or you're playing at the high difficulty, one saber cut = kill. Every time.

Even on higher difficulties, getting a direct hit on every enemy kills them instantly, the only ones who can withstand slashes are the armored enemies ( the hazard trooper, jump trooper and the ones with the armor made of Cortosis, the statues on the temple at the end of MOTS and the assasins droids on the Coruscant level)

There are good forcefield and/or energy based armors and heat-proof alloys in the SW universe that can resist the lightsabers briefly before being destroyed. It makes sense that elite units, expensive battle droids and such would be coated in that. But lightsaber users having massive issues cutting through any other target and pounding on it in long combos, hit after hit, dozens of times with no effects, is just absolutely ridiculous, actually makes lightsaber look like a weapon that could be replaced with a stick and would have similar effects - and yet I see it in almost every single star wars game I've ever played or watched. Jedi Knight series is literally the only game that I know of, that worked it's ass off to find a satisfying way around this issue and succeed. This is why I have such massive respect for the series till this day.

Iirc there are 4 scenes of dismemberment: the arm of the monster in Mos Eisley, the snow monster's arm on Hoth, Luke's hand in Cloud City, and Darth Vader's arm on Death Star. And of those three were either robotic limbs or belonged to inhuman monsters I think it's because people weren't so desentisised to movie violence back then. If the movies had as much violence as modern films they would've been censored or movie theaters might have refused to show them, and most parents definitely wouldn't have let their children watch them

@@tyrongkojy Yeah man, "Magnetic field this, Polarity that..." is what allows for like 80% of the coolest sci fi crap to even be imaginable XD. Seriously tho, that's why I'm mentioning magnetic field doohikies in plural, the thickness and reach of the gas flow could be regulated by a primary field that shapes the blade, which works together with a secondary field that stabilizes radiant heat and ultraviolet light, which is the one Stranded Okuda is talking about. The secondary field is for example why Finn, someone who can't use the Force to protect his retinae, was able to use a saber without a welding mask, even when sabers are colliding with anything (which I guess someone like a Darksider would override because they're assholes and would want to ruin bystander's day just to feed from the suddenly bad mood XD), and I added the part of regular people not being able to use them for too long, as a way of easily close the "if it's such a good weapon, why don't everybody use one, eh?" plot hole. Also the primary field is the reason why the gas flow is contained and Jedis no longer have to wear backpacks for power supply (and advances in portable gass compression technology I suppose)

This just makes the Realistic Sabers in Jedi Knight all the more enjoyable. Gliding through a room of Stormtroopers and leaving only heaps of body parts behind you is infinitely satisfying, and it turns lightsaber duels into fast, deadly exchanges that usually only last a few seconds.

I'd hazard that a large part of it is that if you had lightsabers that cut through people, it'd be one hit kill battles which would be really hard to balance around. I suppose you might be able to have the enemy character dodge the hit with a "stamina" bar that goes down as they dodge. Might be a good idea for Disney to look into, if the mouse wants to make more true to lore Star Wars games.

cause enemies have health bars. Honestly it'd be better to do it like Outer Rim, where one good strike ends that fight then and there. bosses could be different. Maybe their health bar is the ability to automatically block your attacks(like how jedi have quick reflexes) and you have to fight them to get to the kill shot. also having yourself get one or two shotted by a lightsaber in return would fix a lot of balance issues. can't just go in swinging like a mad man. have to actually block and doge as well as attack... like an actual sword fight!

I think an easy solution for a game with lightsabers is to not have them early on, instead using electric blades or smth - then when you introduce them you also start to encounter some enemies with upgraded armor/shields that you have to wear down before slicing and dicing them. That way you keep the satisfaction of slicing most enemies, while still providing a challenge when encountering bosses or just other lightsaber wielders.

The average enemies in Fallen Order are one shot by a lighsaber. Although most aren't, as that would be a bit too easy. Most are only a couple hits though, I'd say they did a good job with the Saber in game form. No dismemberment though. The Force Unleased 2 has plenty of dismemberment though.

@@gadgetts5342 base stormtroopers, the most common enemy, are one shot. The more advanced troopers are 2 or 3 hit. And most animals are at least 2 hit. None of the enemies except bosses feel tanky. If everything was one hit however it would be far too easy. Buy yeah, the only common enemy that is truly one hit are the stormtroopers, most enemies require a couple hits though. They payed attention to trying to make the lightsaber feel more like a lightsaber. They can't do this in full of course. It is a game, and near one shoting every enemy wouldn't make the best game format. But thier are, in fact, one shot enemies. The first and most common enemies you meet.

I think canonically lightsabers behave somewhere in between. They dont completely ATOMIZE everything they touch, but they still do a lot of damage. Since it still takes a decent amount of force to cut through something like metal doors, its reasonable to assume that there is a limit to how much material a lightsaber can just slice through cleanly depending on how much force the lightsaber was swung with.

It depends on the material. There are some materials in Star Wars canon that are much more resilient to a lightsaber than others, like beskar. There are possibly some alien species whos bodies are more resilient than others, too - hell, there's some who are completely resilient to the Force. But if it's a normal stormtrooper? Then yeah, it should be cutting them up like butter.

most of the fiction/EU describe them like a contained-plasma chainsaw gyroscopic which is why they are hard to use, there's a momentum to them. on contact the containment "leaks" and so you get burned by moving plasma blade until there's no more resistence. the doors are more heat resistant and thicker so take longer to "burn"

To be fair, I'd hazard a guess that one of the main reasons force users use lightsabers is rule of cool. After all, they have blasters a plenty and could probably act as a sort of point defense with said blasters. Then again "runs on rule of cool" probably describes half of Star Wars.

This wasn't necessarily the case with the Jedi Knight games. Lightsabers were particularly useful against most ranged enemies because you can deflect their shots, and most ranged weapons were difficult to use against lightsaber wielding enemies for that reason.

In Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast (what a title), lightsabers worked properly! In fact, occasionally you could cut off an enemy's hand, and they'd scream and clutch their stump for a second before dying. It was pretty brutal.

Good luck with that. The Ghost of Tsushima devs put some actual effort into their difficulty modes. Most other devs think 'moar hp + moar dmg' is all that's needed.

​@found6393 Nah ghost of tsushima has fucked up difficulty. If you die too many time in hard mode, the game will despawn all enemies except for the commanders. And if you die to the commander, then again, It'll be just him. They'll use cheap tricks to lower the difficulty. That ruined my second playthrough.

But that would give you a game much harder than Elden Ring, or people who complain why enemies die in 1 hit and you don't. edit; I just remembered Devil May Cry had an Heaven or Hell mode which meant you and all enemies (and bosses) die in 1 single hit. That was actually ridiculously easy, though that was probably because you had a gun that would auto-aim and could shoot like 5 times per second. It pretty much worked like if you look at an enemy it's dead.

@@WaterbuffelNL you can just have tougher enemies later down the line people with light saber resistant armor that take more hits, more skilled enemies that could deflect or evade better ,shields heavy plated droids or alien creatures plenty of way to add difficulty but stay true to the weapon. It would also be dope if Jedi battles were similar to bushido blade where one get hit in the right spot crippled or ended a fighter

This one spoke to me. In Jedi Knight Outcast you could use a console command to set the lightsabre's cutting ability to maximum, which made it mostly movie-realistic. It also made the game insanely easy, with one-hit kills on literally everything.

Jedi Academy probably has the best lightsaber physics especially with the limb removals and such. Even get to see steam rise off it when you're in the rain.

Jedi outcast 2 / Jedi Academy is feels SO GOOD and fluid . .. . The light saber , the blasters that mad holes/ desinagrate bodies and the force chocked hearing the crack / lighting slowly burning the body and seeing it fall to the ground shaking . . . It had that undertone of darkness to it

Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast + Academy. Turn dismemberment up and it plays exactly like it should. Enemies die from one swing and so do you… it makes lightsaber fights dangerous and terrifying.

IMO that's the point of lightsabers, high damage but you have to be extremely careful. this is why in the movies you see a million different blocks but only a handful of slices.

Imho the player should also be able to be killed in one hit. Instead of health there should be a system where it will auto block for you if you fail to do it in time, but the auto block will heavily drain your stamina and/or stagger you. When your stamina is empty then you'll die with one hit

@@brianfunt2619 Sekiro kinda works like that. Every enemy and boss has a posture meter that depletes if you attack while they block or deflect one of their attacks. Once their posture is broken, most things die in one to a few hits, including the player. It makes swords actually feel dangerous compared to most other games in the genre.

I'll never forget that one cheat you could do in Jedi Outcast and Academy... Full dismemberment any time a blade so much as touched the enemy. Boss fights ended quickly, and fighting multiple sith was extremely difficult. Amazing times.

@Kermit with an AK umm, ok..... but they are doing it so it doesn't get an 18 rating. Hasbro barely did any toys for the newer disney games just because of their 15 rating and LEGO flat out refused. so an 18 would mean little to no merchandise. and yes that might sound greedy, and probably is, but lego sw fans wanted to see game characters in sets, and all they got was 3 battle packs themed around battlefront games. and plus black series figures look stunning, imagine if we couldn't have them for the interesting JFO designs!

I think the lightsaber is a mix between a 4000 degree laminar flow of plasma with the raw kinetic energy of a a weightless retractable tungsten-equivalent baton. Basically force weapons are neato and kyber crystals are terrifying.

I just thought of something: we know the games' lightsabers are more like lightbatons because of balancing reasons, or else the combat would be extremely easy, right? well, why can future a game pull a page out of FromSoftware's playbook and make the enemies *extra* challenging (way more damage, tricky patterns, etc) so the combat becomes more rewarding while still making one-hit kills viable and fun (save for certain enemies)? I imagine a challenge would be to make it attractive to a mainstream audience, so I know my logic isn't airtight, but I'd be willing to give such concept a try...

legit jedi outcast 2 was the closes thing to movie lightsabers we've ever got.. especially when you have the mod that allows all and any amputations... so good. made fighting the reborn troopers so much more enjoyable
